Which Australian cities pay cyber security professionals the most?

Sydney pays the highest median cybersecurity wage in Australia based on ABS data, with metro median around AUD $135,000 per year. Melbourne follows closely at AUD $128,000 median, with the strongest growth in financial-services cybersecurity roles. Canberra pays strong rates for federal government and defence contractor roles. Brisbane and Perth pay slightly less but offer lower cost of living.

Do I need certifications to break into cybersecurity in Australia?

Certifications like CompTIA Security+, (ISC)2 CISSP, and CREST accelerate career progression in Australia. The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) certifications (IRAP, ICT Security) are required for federal government roles. Most private-sector employers expect Security+ for entry and CISSP for mid-career roles. Splunk, CrowdStrike, and AWS Security certifications carry premium weight at enterprise employers.

Is cybersecurity a good career in Australia in 2026?

Yes. AustCyber forecasts 30,000+ unfilled cybersecurity roles by 2027. The SOCI Act and Essential Eight frameworks have created sustained compliance demand across ASX-listed companies, banks, government, and critical infrastructure operators. Expect 4% to 7% annual wage growth through 2026 and 2027 as supply remains constrained.

Is there a cybersecurity skills shortage in Australia?

Yes. AustCyber's annual sectoral competitiveness report forecasts roughly 30,000 unfilled cybersecurity roles by 2027. The shortage is concentrated in senior incident response, security architecture, cloud security, and OT/ICS cybersecurity. Government incentives for reskilling and migration priority for cybersecurity occupations under the Skilled Migration program have not closed the gap.

Will cybersecurity pay rise in 2026?

Yes. AustCyber forecasts 4% to 7% annual wage growth for cybersecurity specialists through 2027, consistent with what the sector experienced in 2024 and 2025. Senior specialists with security architecture, cloud security, and incident response expertise see the largest gains. Public-sector cybersecurity roles at APS 6 and EL 1 levels continue to grow as ASD expands its cyber workforce.

Q: How does the SOCI Act affect cybersecurity pay?

The Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI) Act requires banks, energy operators, telecommunications carriers, and other critical infrastructure entities to report cyber incidents and maintain risk management programs. This has created thousands of compliance and incident-response roles across these sectors, pulling median pay up 15% to 20% since 2022. Employers competed for a small pool of SOCI-experienced practitioners, especially in Sydney and Melbourne.

Q: Which Australian industries pay cybersecurity the most?

Banking and financial services in Sydney and Melbourne pay the highest cybersecurity premiums, often 10% to 25% above the median. Federal government agencies and defence contractors in Canberra pay strong rates plus super and benefits. Energy sector in Perth and Brisbane has critical-infrastructure demand. Big Four consulting hires cybersecurity specialists at the senior manager level for AUD $180,000 to $250,000.

Australian cybersecurity specialists earn a median of AUD $115,000 to $145,000 per year depending on experience, based on ABS and JobOutlook data (Source: JobOutlook, ABS Labour Force Survey 2024-2025). Senior incident response and cloud security architects at ASX-listed employers clear AUD $180,000 to $250,000, while CISO roles at top Australian companies push total compensation into the AUD $300,000+ band.

The Australian cybersecurity labour market has been constrained since 2022. The Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI) Act, the Essential Eight framework, and mandatory Notifiable Data Breaches scheme have created sustained demand for security specialists across banks, government, and critical infrastructure operators. Employers have competed aggressively for a limited pool of senior talent, especially in Sydney and Melbourne financial-services and government roles.

Data last verified September 2026 from ABS Labour Force Survey (2024-2025), JobOutlook wage data, and AustCyber sectoral competitiveness reports.

Industry premiums

Industry mix matters as much as metro. Banking and financial services in Sydney pay the highest cybersecurity premiums, often 10% to 25% above the median. Federal government agencies and defence contractors in Canberra pay strong rates plus super and benefits. The Big Four consulting firms hire cybersecurity specialists at the senior manager level for AUD $180,000 to $250,000. How SOCI Act and Essential Eight reshape demand

The SOCI Act requires banks, energy operators, telecommunications carriers, transport operators, and other critical infrastructure entities to report cyber incidents and maintain risk management programs. This has created thousands of compliance and incident-response roles since 2022. The Essential Eight framework from the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has driven demand for security specialists across federal agencies and ASX-listed companies.

CompTIA Security+, CISSP, IRAP, and ASD certifications

CompTIA Security+ clears entry roles at most Australian employers. CISSP remains the dominant mid-career gate, typically associated with AUD $145,000 to $190,000 roles. ASD certifications (IRAP, ICT Security) are required for federal government roles. Splunk, CrowdStrike, and AWS Security certifications carry premium weight at enterprise employers, especially in Sydney and Melbourne.

How to compare cybersecurity offers across Australian employers

Compare employers on base pay, superannuation rate (11.5% to 12% in 2026), bonus structure, and equity if a public-listed company. ASX-listed employers typically include ASX share allocations or LTIP grants that can add 10% to 30% to total compensation. Big Four and government roles include defined-benefit superannuation components that materially affect retirement outcomes.

Methodology

Salary figures draw on ABS Labour Force Survey (2024-2025), JobOutlook wage data, and AustCyber sectoral competitiveness reports. Annual figures assume full-time work. Currency is AUD throughout.

Compensation data reflects full-time wage-and-salary employment. Total compensation estimates include superannuation (11.5% to 12% in 2026) and exclude equity grants at ASX-listed employers.

The Australian cybersecurity labour market is structured around three buyer bases. Federal government (ASD, ACSC, Department of Home Affairs) and their contractors absorb roughly a third of the senior talent pool, with salaries aligned to APS 6 and EL 1 level frameworks plus super. ASX-listed enterprises (banks, telcos, retailers) account for another third, paying competitive base plus equity. The remaining third sits at MSSPs and consultancies including the Big Four, paying premium base with structured bonus pools tied to billable hours and managed-service revenue. AustCyber's sectoral competitiveness plan forecasts continued growth in these three demand pools through 2027. Specialists with cloud security architecture, security engineering (especially for the Essential Eight baseline), and SOC analyst/leadership skills see the strongest wage growth. Newcomers to the field should focus on CompTIA Security+ for entry, AWS Security Specialty or Azure Security Engineer for cloud roles, and CISSP for the senior gate. Migration priority through the Skilled Migration program remains available for cybersecurity occupations under ANZSCO.

For Australian cybersecurity specialists targeting the federal government track, the trajectory typically runs from APS 5 (entry analyst) to APS 6 (mid-career) to EL 1 (senior specialist) over 8 to 12 years. APS 6 sits around AUD $95,000 to $110,000 base plus 15.4% superannuation; EL 1 around AUD $125,000 to $145,000. The ASD's SCTI panel accreditation and IRAP endorsement expand access to federal roles. For private-sector tracks, the Big Four cybersecurity practices hire managers at the senior level for AUD $180,000 to $250,000 all-in. ASX 50 banks pay premium total compensation (AUD $200,000 to $350,000) including LTIP grants for senior security leaders. Career path planning should align certifications to the buyer base: CompTIA Security+ for entry across all, CISSP for mid-career everywhere, CREST or OSCP for offensive roles at MSSPs, and ASD IRAP for federal roles.
