The answer changes with one thing: which AWS level you plan to sit. AWS sets no hard rule that stops you booking an exam, yet its own guides push recommended hands-on time from about six months for a foundational exam up to two years for a professional one. That gap between the legal rule and the practical rule is where most candidates get stuck. This guide covers aws certification prerequisites, vouchers, fees, retakes and a study plan, so you can pick a level and book with confidence.
The short answer is that nobody can stop you taking an AWS exam. Readiness is the harder question, and it depends on the work you have already done rather than on paperwork.
Do AWS certification prerequisites block you from booking an exam?
They do not. AWS says on its Before Testing policy page that all AWS Certifications may be earned without completing specific prerequisites. The same page notes that AWS still publishes recommendations for knowledge and experience so they match each certification level. No certificate has to be bought first, and no rule stops a career changer from sitting the Solutions Architect Associate exam on day one.
A few real eligibility rules do apply. You need valid government-issued identification showing residence in a country where AWS delivers exams. Candidates aged 13 to 17 can test with consent from a parent or legal guardian. Pearson VUE runs every exam, either at a test center or with an online proctor, and you pay at the point of scheduling. You can also pass without meeting the aws certification prerequisites that AWS recommends, because the exam blueprint is the same for everyone.
One rule catches people out later. If you pass an exam, AWS says you cannot retake that same exam for two years. When AWS updates a certification, the exam code changes and the new version opens to you.
How much hands-on experience does each AWS level expect?
AWS Training and Certification says it recommends at least six months to two years of hands-on experience using AWS, depending on the level of the exam. That one line covers every technical level, from Foundational up to Specialty. The range matters more than any single headline, so here is how it breaks down. Study windows in the table are planning estimates that assume two evening study blocks a week.
| Level | Recommended experience | Exam price | Planning window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundational | Up to 6 months of exposure, not required | $100 | 4 to 8 weeks |
| Associate | At least 1 year of hands-on AWS work | $150 | 8 to 12 weeks |
| Professional | 2 or more years of hands-on AWS work | $300 | 3 to 5 months |
| Specialty | Deep specialist experience in one service area | $300 | 3 to 5 months |
Cloud Practitioner is the softest landing. AWS says candidates could have up to six months of exposure to AWS Cloud, and that exposure is not required. The Solutions Architect Associate exam guide asks for at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services. The professional level sits at the top, where the DevOps Engineer Professional guide asks for two or more years of experience provisioning, operating and managing AWS environments.
Now translate that into your own life. If you have never opened the console, a plan that starts at Cloud Practitioner and then moves to Associate gives you a year of real work plus eight to twelve weeks of guided study. If you already run servers in production, go straight to the Associate exam that matches your job title. You can see the full fee picture in our AWS certification cost breakdown and the wider path in our AWS certification guide for 2026.
How do free AWS exam vouchers work in 2026?
AWS runs several voucher programs. The simplest one is automatic. Once you pass any AWS Certification, AWS gives you a 50 percent discount on your next AWS exam, and the voucher appears in your AWS Certification account.
The time-limited campaigns take more steps. The AWS voucher campaign terms list a promotion that covers 100 percent of the initial exam price for a Professional or Specialty exam taken between April 15, 2026 and December 31, 2026, and it adds a free retake. A separate promotion gives a free Cloud Practitioner exam to anyone who passes the AI Practitioner exam by September 30, 2026 and then books Cloud Practitioner by November 30, 2026.
Students have a third route. AWS Builder Center runs a Student Rewards program for verified students that includes a $100 exam voucher and 12 months of Skill Builder Premium. AWS Educate also runs an Emerging Talent Community where points from quizzes unlock exam vouchers for learners aged 18 and over.
One rule applies to every promotion. A prepaid voucher has to be redeemed during the scheduling process at checkout, and most campaigns allow one redemption per account. The terms also say that normal scheduling, cancellation and retake rules continue to apply, so a free exam does not mean a free second attempt unless the offer says so.
What does an AWS exam cost and what happens if you fail?
AWS Training and Certification publishes three price points. Foundational and Business exams cost $100, Associate exams cost $150, and Professional and Specialty exams cost $300. Prices are quoted in US dollars, AWS updates local currency prices every April, and taxes can apply on top.
Retakes are not discounted. The After Testing policy page says you must wait 14 calendar days before retaking a failed exam, there is no limit on how many attempts you can make, and you must pay the full registration fee each time. Plan for that 14 day gap before you book, because the wait starts the day after your failed attempt and weekends count.
Certifications stay valid for three years. You can recertify by passing the current version of the exam, by moving up to a higher credential, or by finishing maintenance activities in AWS Skill Builder. Plenty of people use the 50 percent voucher for that final exam as well. More detail on the money side is in our AWS exam fee breakdown for every level.
How long does a realistic study plan take for a career changer?
Here is a plan that fits around a full-time job. It assumes 8 to 10 hours a week and targets Cloud Practitioner first, then Associate level. Move faster if cloud work is already part of your day.
| Weeks | Focus | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | Vocabulary | Learn what a region, an availability zone, a virtual private cloud and an instance mean |
| 3 and 4 | Core services | Build one small project, such as a static site on S3 behind CloudFront |
| 5 and 6 | Practice | Use the free AWS official practice question set and the official pretest |
| 7 and 8 | Exam prep | Read the exam guide line by line, then book the Pearson VUE seat |
Weeks one and two are pure vocabulary, and that is not wasted time. Every AWS question leans on those words. Weeks three and four turn to services, where changing one setting teaches more than any slide deck.
Weeks five and six belong to practice questions. AWS offers an official practice question set and a pretest for each exam at no cost. Aim for a steady score above 70 percent on the pretest before you book a date.
Weeks seven and eight are for the exam itself. Review the format on the AWS certification site, confirm the version you are sitting, and schedule the Pearson VUE seat for a morning when you can focus. For a second opinion on the level choice, read our guide to passing the AWS Solutions Architect exam.
What signs show that you are ready to book?
Readiness looks like a checklist rather than a feeling. Work through these points in the week before your exam date. Tick most of them and book, or spend another fortnight in the labs.
| Readiness check | What a ready answer sounds like |
|---|---|
| Core services | You can name the main services for your level without looking them up |
| Hands-on proof | You have built something in the AWS console, even a small one |
| Design reasoning | You can explain why you picked one design over another in plain words |
| Practice score | Your official pretest score is steady and above 70 percent |
| Exam logistics | You know the exam length, the question count and what you can bring |
Two more signals matter in 2026. Check whether the exam you want has a new version coming. AWS has already announced updated Developer Associate and Solutions Architect Professional exams, with registration for both opening on October 27, 2026, and our guide to the 2026 AWS exam changes lists the dates.
That is the whole answer. AWS certification prerequisites are soft guidance, not locked doors. Pick the level that matches the job you want next, claim the vouchers that apply to you, and give your study weeks the attention the level deserves.
