What skills does the AZ-400 assume you already have?
Microsoft describes the exam as measuring your ability to design and implement processes and communications, design and implement a source control strategy, design and implement build and release pipelines, develop a security and compliance plan, and implement an instrumentation strategy. Every one of those verbs is the word design, which tells you the level. The exam does not ask which button to click. It asks which approach fits the situation and what the trade off is.
That means the exam assumes real environment time. If you have never set up a pipeline that failed and then fixed it, you can memorise the tools but not the judgement. People who take the exam straight out of a course often know the terminology and still miss the scenario questions, because the scenarios are all about what breaks under pressure.
Two habits close that gap fast. Keep a written record of the pipelines you have built, with what failed and how you fixed it, because that record is the raw material for every scenario question. And read the case studies on the Microsoft Learn exam page carefully, since they show the exact format you will face.
What are the retake rules and what do they cost?
Microsoft lets you retake an exam 24 hours after your first attempt. After that, a 14 day waiting period applies between each further attempt, and you may take a given exam no more than five times in a 12 month period. Every retake is another exam fee, and a second failure therefore costs you both $165 and two weeks.
There is one waiver path, and it is narrow. If you had an internet connectivity issue or equipment failure during the exam and Pearson VUE opened a case, you can request a waiver of the waiting period. The request has to include the Pearson VUE case number, and Microsoft says it will not grant a waiver for any other reason. Plan for the full fee and treat the retake rule as a reason to practise properly first.
How do you study for the AZ-400 without overspending?
Use the free material first. Every Microsoft Learn certification page carries a study guide, a practice assessment, and an exam sandbox that shows the real question interface. The practice assessment is free and tells you your readiness before you spend money on anything else.
Then buy only what you still need. If you are strong on pipelines but weak on security and compliance, buy a book for that area rather than a full course. If your whole gap is hands on time, no course fixes that. A lab environment or a volunteer project with a real pipeline does. Our guide to Azure certification cost compares the Microsoft and AWS paths, and our guide to AWS certification exam fees covers the other major cloud vendor if your employer pays for one of the two.
Is the AZ-400 worth the money?
Judge it against your job rather than the fee. The exam is a strong signal for roles that involve platform design, release governance, and reliability work. It is much weaker for a first job, where hiring managers want to see what you built rather than what you passed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median annual wage for software developers at $135,980 in May 2025, and DevOps sits inside that market, so the credential pays off in the same place the salary does.
One practical note. If you are aiming at a broader cloud role, the AZ-305 solutions architect credential covers design decisions across the platform, and our guide to AZ-305 certification cost compares the two exams and the study time each one needs.
