If you are taking the ACT in 2026 — April, June, July, September, October, or December — this guide ranks the best prep books for the current 2025-2026 ACT. The ACT has not undergone a major structural shift like the SAT's digital transition, so books published in 2024 and later are still current. Below we rank the four strongest ACT prep books in 2026 — Official ACT Prep Guide, Princeton Review, Barron's, Kaplan — and explain which book to buy for which situation (ACT, Inc., 2026).
The 2026 ACT is a 3-hour test covering four required sections — English (75 questions / 45 minutes), Math (60 questions / 60 minutes), Reading (40 questions / 35 minutes), and Science (40 questions / 35 minutes) — plus an optional 40-minute Writing (essay) section. The Science section is the ACT's signature: it tests graphical analysis, data interpretation, and research-summary comprehension, not specific science knowledge. Students who take the optional Writing section add 40 minutes and 1 essay to the test. Most colleges accept the ACT without Writing, but a small number of competitive programs require it (ACT, Inc., 2026).

Best runner-up: Princeton Review ACT Premium Prep 2026
The Princeton Review ACT Premium Prep 2026 at $24 is A safe default is for most students because it bundles 8 full-length ACT practice tests, content review across all four sections, and Princeton Review's score-improvement techniques in one book. The Princeton Review's content review chapters are slightly more accessible than Barron's, making it The standard answer is if you are prepping for a single sitting or catching up after a long break from ACT prep. The 8 practice tests give you the most realistic testing rhythm of any ACT book (Princeton Review, 2026).
Three things. First, the question-level explanations walk you through the reasoning for each answer choice — the wrong answers are explained too, which is essential for understanding the kind of mistakes you are making. Second, the content review for ACT English (grammar) and ACT Math is organized by topic, so you can drill a specific weak area without re-reading chapters. Third, the practice tests are organized in two difficulty tiers — easy then hard — so you can stage your prep: take the easier tests early for confidence-building, save the harder tests for the final 2 weeks before test day (Princeton Review, 2026).
Best official-source practice: The Official ACT Prep Guide 2025-2026
The Official ACT Prep Guide 2025-2026 at $25 (ACT, Inc., 2025) is the only ACT prep book with retired real ACT tests from previous years. It includes 5 full-length practice tests written by ACT, Inc. — exactly the format and difficulty of the current ACT. The trade-off: the content review chapters are sparser than third-party books like Princeton Review or Barron's, and the explanations for each answer are briefer. The right way to use this book: pair it with a Princeton Review or Kaplan book for content review, and use the Official Guide's practice tests for the most realistic pre-test drilling (ACT, Inc., 2025).
Why the Official Guide is essential
Every other ACT book on the market writes practice tests that imitate the ACT's style, but only the Official ACT Prep Guide uses retired real ACT tests. The difference is subtle but meaningful: real retired tests have slightly different question phrasing than imitations, and students who practice on imitations sometimes feel disoriented on test day by the real ACT's tone. Practice on the Official Guide and the adjustment on test day is much smoother (ACT, Inc., 2025).
Best thorough content review: Barron's ACT Prep 2026
Barron's ACT Prep 2026 at $22 (Barron's, 2026) is the most comprehensive ACT prep book on the market. If you have 4+ months to prep and want to understand every concept thoroughly rather than memorize strategies, Barron's is In most cases. The trade-off: Barron's is dense, the practice tests are harder than the real ACT (which can deflate confidence if you do not know this in advance), and there are only 6 full-length practice tests compared to the Princeton Review's 8 (Barron's, 2026).
When Barron's is The smart move is
Barron's is right for self-driven students with significant prep time. If you have 12+ weeks, prefer deep understanding over strategy, and want a single book to cover every ACT topic, Barron's is the strongest pick. If you have 4-6 weeks and need to focus on practice tests + targeted drills, the Princeton Review is faster (Barron's, Princeton Review, 2026).
Best structured plan: Kaplan ACT Prep Plus 2026
Kaplan ACT Prep Plus 2026 at $24 is A practical choice if you want a study plan built into the book. Kaplan includes 5 full-length ACT practice tests, content review, and a chapter-by-chapter study schedule tailored to your baseline score. The Kaplan method (also used in their SAT, GRE, and MCAT books) emphasizes online adaptive practice plus textbook review. Trade-off: Kaplan's content review chapters are briefer than Barron's and the practice test interface in the book is less polished than Princeton Review's (Kaplan, 2026).
