The variable that decides which security certification pays off is your current experience and the job title you want next. Exam and training fees across the field run from $199 for an entry level exam to $1,749 for a hands-on pentesting bundle, and renewal costs come back every year. By the end of this guide you will know which credential fits each career stage, what each one costs, and the order to take them in.
Most people search for best cyber security certifications and get a list of acronyms with no order attached. Every credential below is vendor run and used by real employers. The trick is matching the right one to the stage of your career.
What are the best cyber security certifications for 2026?
The best cyber security certifications fall into three groups. Entry level credentials open the door. Practitioner credentials prove you can run the tools of the trade. Advanced credentials show an employer that you can lead a security function or break into systems on purpose.
Several popular entry credentials work well together. The ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity is the lightest way in. CompTIA Security+ is the one most job postings name. The ISC2 CISSP and the ISACA CISM are the two credentials that lead to manager and architect roles. The OffSec OSCP proves real hacking skill to employers who care about hands-on work.
| Certification | Stage | Exam cost | Experience rule | Roles it opens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity | Entry | $199 plus $50 each year | None required | Security analyst, tier one SOC role |
| CompTIA Security+ | Entry | See the Security+ cost page | None required | Security analyst, security engineer, systems administrator |
| CompTIA CySA+ | Practitioner | Check the CompTIA store | Experience recommended | Security operations analyst |
| INE eJPT | Practitioner | Voucher sold by INE | None required | Junior penetration tester |
| ISC2 CISSP | Advanced | See the CISSP cost page | 5 years in 2 of 8 domains | Security architect, senior security leader |
| EC-Council CEH | Advanced | See the CEH cost page | Experience for some paths | Ethical hacker, penetration tester |
| ISACA CISM | Advanced | $575 member, $760 non-member | 5 years across 3 of 4 domains | Security manager, CISO track |
| OffSec OSCP | Advanced practical | $1,749 course and cert bundle | None required | Penetration tester, red team |
Which certification should a beginner start with?
For cybersecurity certifications for beginners, the ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity is the cleanest first step. ISC2 lists no work experience requirement, and the exam covers five areas. They are security principles, security governance, identity and access management, networking and cloud security, and security operations with incident response. ISC2 also states that the credential is accredited under ISO 17024 and approved by the US Department of Defense standard 8140.03.
The free version of that exam has ended. ISC2 says it closed new enrollment for the One Million Certified in Cybersecurity program on May 20, 2026. If you already hold a valid exam code, you can still sit for the exam until December 31, 2026. Everyone else pays the standard $199 fee and then a $50 annual maintenance fee after passing.
CompTIA Security+ is the other strong beginner choice because employers name it often. CompTIA says version 7 is available now and that version 8 is expected around November 17, 2026. CompTIA lists the job titles that match the credential, including security analyst, security engineer, and systems administrator. Our CompTIA Security+ exam cost 2026 breakdown covers the voucher price and the cheaper ways to buy it. If the terms feel vague, our guide to what is cyber security in 2026 explains the jobs behind them.
What do the practitioner level certifications add?
Entry credentials show that you know the vocabulary. Practitioner credentials show that you can do the work. The gap matters most in job interviews, where employers ask for evidence that you have analyzed alerts or tested a real system.
The CompTIA CySA+ focuses on the defense side of the work. It validates the ability to detect, analyze, and respond to threats in a security operations center. That skill set fits threat detection, blue team, and incident response roles, and it pairs well with a Security+ study plan.
The INE eJPT takes the other path. INE describes it as a hands-on, entry level red team certification for people with little or no security experience. The exam covers assessment methodologies, host and network auditing, host and network penetration testing, and web application penetration testing. INE lists host and network penetration testing at 35 percent of the exam, which tells you where to spend your lab hours.
Both sit in the middle of the security certification roadmap 2026. A good order is one entry exam, one practitioner exam, and then a specialty exam that matches the work you want to be doing.
Which advanced certifications do employers value most?
The CISSP is the broadest advanced credential and the one that appears most often on senior postings. ISC2 requires 5 years of cumulative full-time experience in two or more of its eight domains. A post-secondary degree can count for up to one year, and certain approved credentials count for one year as well. The exam runs 3 hours with 100 to 150 items and needs a passing score of 700 out of 1000. ISC2 asks for 120 continuing education credits over each three-year cycle.
The CISM focuses on running a security program rather than defending a network. ISACA requires you to pass the exam within five years and to show 5 years of security management work across at least three of the four CISM domains. ISACA lists a one-time application fee of $50 after you pass. The exam itself is 120 multiple choice questions in 3.5 hours, according to the ISACA candidate guide.
The OSCP proves skill instead of knowledge. OffSec describes a practical assessment of 23 hours and 45 minutes with three standalone targets and one Active Directory set of three machines. You get another 24 hours after the practical ends to file the report, and all exams are proctored. OffSec lists a course and certification bundle at $1,749 for 90 days of lab access and one exam attempt. The annual Learn One plan is $2,749 with 365 days of labs and two attempts.
How much does each certification really cost?
Price the exam, the study material, and the yearly renewal together. A $199 exam that expires every year costs more over time than a bigger exam that stays active.
| Credential | Fee to start | Renewal |
|---|---|---|
| ISC2 CC | $199 | $50 annual maintenance fee |
| ISACA CISM | $575 member or $760 non-member | $50 application fee plus annual CPE |
| OffSec OSCP bundle | $1,749 for course, labs and one attempt | Separate yearly subscription options |
The prices for Security+, CEH and CISSP change often, so read the live pages before you budget. Our CEH certification cost 2026 breakdown shows the EC-Council voucher tiers, including the difference between the theory exam and the practical. The CISM numbers come from the ISACA certification exam candidate guide, which lists $575 for members and $760 for non-members.
How do you build a security certification roadmap for 2026?
Build the roadmap in order of difficulty and employer demand. Start with the CC or Security+ if you have no security job. Add CySA+ if you want a defense role, or the eJPT if you want a testing role. Move to the CISSP or CISM once you have the years of experience they require, and add the OSCP only if you can give the lab time that a practical exam demands.
Watch the timing. CompTIA says the next Security+ version is expected around November 17, 2026, so study now and pick the exam version your study material matches. Our cybersecurity roadmap 2026 from beginner to pentester lays out the full sequence with the study order for each step.
One final check before you pay anything. Read the experience rule for the credential you want, because the hardest part of some exams comes after the test. The ISC2 offers an Associate path for CISSP candidates who pass the exam early, and ISACA lets you apply for CISM within five years of passing. Use those windows to plan.
