The variable that decides which IT exam you should take is the job you want next, not your diploma. The money spread runs from $99 for a Microsoft Azure fundamentals exam to $548 for the two CompTIA A+ cores. Study time runs from about five hours of vendor video to several months of evening study. By the end you will know which credentials need no degree, what each one costs in 2026, and which one to buy first.
Microsoft lists $99 for the AZ-900 exam, and CompTIA charges $274 for each A+ core. Every exam on this list has no degree requirement. Several also ask for no work history at all. That matters most to working adults, because it makes a first IT job possible without two more years of tuition.
Which are the best IT certifications without degree in 2026?
best it certifications without degree is a shortlist with a catch. The catch is the job you want next, not the diploma you do or do not have. Four tracks cover nearly every entry role: hardware and support, networking, security, and cloud basics. Each track ends at a different job title, and each exam sits at a different price.
The cheapest useful starting point is CompTIA Tech+. The exam code is FC0-U71, it never expires, and CompTIA lists no prior experience as a recommendation. It runs 60 minutes with up to 70 questions, and the pass mark is 650 out of 900. CompTIA certification pricing puts the Tech+ voucher at $129 in the United States.
Security sits one step over the support line. The ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity credential is the cheapest door into that field. ISC2 marks it as entry level with no work experience required, and ISC2 exam pricing lists the CC at $199. The exam outline that took effect on September 1, 2026 covers five domains, from security principles to incident response. ISC2 also ran a free program for one million candidates, but it closed on May 20, 2026.
Cloud credentials cost the least of all. AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner costs $100 and asks 65 questions in 90 minutes. Microsoft Azure Fundamentals AZ-900 costs $99 and gives you 45 minutes. Microsoft says its fundamentals certifications do not expire, and Microsoft asks for no other exam, degree, or work experience to book the AZ-900.
| Certification | Exam fee in 2026 | Degree needed | Experience needed | Entry job it opens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CompTIA Tech+ | $129 | No | No | Service desk aide, IT intern |
| CompTIA A+ | $274 per core, $548 for both | No | No | Desktop support technician |
| CompTIA Network+ | $399 | No | No | Network support specialist |
| CompTIA Security+ | $439 | No | No | Security operations analyst |
| ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity | $199 | No | No | Junior security analyst |
| AWS Cloud Practitioner | $100 | No | No | Cloud support, sales engineer |
| Microsoft AZ-900 | $99 | No | No | Azure support, cloud admin assistant |
How much does each IT certification cost in 2026?
Most of these exams cost more than people expect, because vendors raise prices. CompTIA raised its US voucher prices on June 1, 2026. Network+ moved from $390 to $399, Security+ from $425 to $439, and A+ from $265 to $274 per core, which puts the full A+ pair at $548.
The A+ pair is the biggest budget surprise. You need a separate voucher for Core 1 and Core 2. Each exam has up to 90 questions in 90 minutes. Core 1 needs 675 out of 900 to pass, and Core 2 needs 700 out of 900. The certification stays valid for three years and renews with continuing education units for $75.
We break the A+ bill down line by line in our guide to what CompTIA A+ certification costs in 2026, including bundle prices and retake rules. The short version is that the exam alone is the cheap part. ISC2 charges $50 to reschedule an exam and $100 to cancel one. AWS charges the full $100 again for a retake after a 14-day wait.
How long does it take to study for each exam?
Microsoft publishes free study paths for the AZ-900 exam on Microsoft Learn. The three main paths add up to about five hours, which makes it the fastest credential here to finish. AWS posts a free four-step exam prep plan for the Cloud Practitioner exam on Skill Builder. Free vendor material is the fastest route through the best it certifications without degree.
The CompTIA exams are much bigger. Professor Messer lists 74 videos and 9 hours 21 minutes for his free Core 1 course, and his other courses follow the same pattern of one chapter per exam objective. Most self-study plans for the CompTIA core exams run two to three months of evening study. Treat that as a planning estimate rather than a vendor promise.
AWS also publishes a price ladder that shows the next step. Foundational exams cost $100, associate level exams cost $150, and professional level exams cost $300. If you start with the cheapest exam, you already know what the step up will cost later.
| Certification | Free study help | Part-time plan |
|---|---|---|
| CompTIA Tech+ | Free course videos and exam objectives | 4 to 6 weeks |
| CompTIA A+ | Free video courses for both cores | 2 to 3 months for the pair |
| CompTIA Network+ | Free video course and practice quizzes | 6 to 8 weeks |
| CompTIA Security+ | Free video course and live study groups | 8 to 10 weeks |
| ISC2 CC | Free practice questions and study groups | 4 to 6 weeks |
| AWS Cloud Practitioner | Free four-step plan on Skill Builder | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Microsoft AZ-900 | Free paths on Microsoft Learn | 1 to 2 weeks |
Those week counts assume about five hours of study a week. The free course lengths come from the vendors themselves.
Which certifications have no degree or experience requirement?
Every exam on this list has no degree requirement. Three of them also ask for no work history. Tech+ lists no prior experience as a recommendation. ISC2 marks the CC as entry level with no work experience required. The AZ-900 has no prerequisites at all.
Security+ sits in the middle. CompTIA recommends Network+ plus two years of work in a security or systems administrator role, but it requires neither one. You can walk in with no experience and sit the exam. CompTIA also expects Security+ version 8 around November 17, 2026, and the current SY0-701 exam retires on June 11, 2027. Decide which version you study first.
That flexibility makes the certificates worth it. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says computer support candidates can qualify with a high school diploma plus the right IT certifications. The same agency lists a bachelor's degree as typical entry education for information security analysts, so a certificate helps there too.
Which exam opens which IT job?
Pair each credential with the title you want on your resume. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for computer user support specialists at $61,860 in May 2025, and network support specialists at $76,220. Those are the two help desk families that A+, Tech+, and Network+ feed. Computer support employment is projected to fall 3 percent from 2025 to 2035, but the agency still expects about 48,700 openings every year.
Security pays more and grows faster. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median for information security analysts at $129,180 in May 2025 and projects 21 percent growth from 2025 to 2035. It also says employers may prefer analysts who hold professional certification.
Cloud is the newest lane, and the exams here are the cheapest way in. If you want the longer cloud ladder, our guide to cloud certifications for career growth covers the associate and professional levels. If you want to move from support into automation and pipelines, our guide to DevOps certifications shows where that path starts.
How is this different from project management certifications?
If you want proof that you can run projects, this is the wrong page. Our guide to project management certifications without a degree covers CAPM, PMP, and the Scrum credentials for people who deliver work instead of building systems.
The track on this page is hands-on technical skill: repairing hardware, running networks, defending systems, and working in the cloud. A help desk or security operations posting asks for A+, Network+, or Security+ first. A program role asks for CAPM or PMP. Both routes can start without a diploma.
Shortlists of best it certifications without degree usually lead with the price, which is the wrong first filter. Eligibility and the job title come first. If you would rather build a business credential without a degree, our guide to ESG certifications covers that route.
