After that, the Associate exam carries the weight with employers. AZ-104 is the most widely requested Microsoft credential in job ads, and it is also the prerequisite for AZ-305 and AZ-400, so it keeps its value even if you never sit the Expert exam.
Skip the Expert level unless you already work in the platform. AZ-305 and AZ-400 are designed for people who design and operate systems at scale, and a brand new graduate rarely gets past the interview screens for those roles without experience.
Our guide to the Azure certification path and its cost maps the Azure ladder in detail if cloud is the direction you are taking.
Applied Skills credentials fill a different gap. They are practice-based, cheaper, and aimed at showing one specific skill in a short assessment rather than proving a whole role, which makes them a good complement to a role exam rather than a replacement for one.
Which Microsoft exams were retired in 2026?
Microsoft retired six popular exams between June and September 2026, and each one has a named replacement you should be studying instead.
AZ-204 Developing Solutions for Microsoft Azure retired on July 31, 2026, and AI-200 Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate replaced it. That retirement hit the Developer Associate path hard, because AZ-204 used to satisfy the prerequisite for AZ-400 DevOps Engineer Expert.
DP-100 Azure Data Scientist Associate retired on June 1, 2026, and AI-300 Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate took its place. AZ-500 Azure Security Engineer Associate retired on August 31, 2026, replaced by SC-500 Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate.
| Retired exam | Retirement date | Replacement |
| DP-100 Azure Data Scientist | June 1, 2026 | AI-300 |
| AI-102 Azure AI Engineer | June 30, 2026 | AI-103 |
| AZ-204 Azure Developer | July 31, 2026 | AI-200 |
| AZ-500 Azure Security Engineer | August 31, 2026 | SC-500 |
| AZ-800 and AZ-801 Server Hybrid | September 30, 2026 | AZ-802 |
| MS-102 Microsoft 365 Administrator | November 30, 2026 | Replacement exam to be confirmed |
Two details catch people out. When only the exam retires and the certification continues, you keep the credential you already hold, as with AZ-800 and AZ-801 moving to AZ-802. When the certification itself retires, it disappears from your profile.
Retirement does not cancel the work you did. A certification you hold keeps its value until its own expiry date, and Microsoft does not remove it retroactively.
What disappears is the ability to earn that exact credential again, which matters if your next renewal is the one that lapses.
If you hold AZ-204, check the current AZ-400 prerequisite list on Microsoft Learn before you assume it still counts. The full list of 2026 retirements and their named replacements is published on the certification retirement guide, which also tracks the next scheduled retirement.
How does Microsoft certification renewal work?
Role-based credentials renew free every year, and you renew with a shorter online assessment rather than another full exam.
That is the biggest cost difference between a Fundamentals credential and everything else. A $165 Associate or Expert exam is a one-year credential, and the annual renewal assessment is free, so the ongoing cost stays at zero.
You renew inside your Microsoft Learn profile, where each credential shows its expiry date and whether a renewal assessment is available. Missing the window does not lose the credential outright, but you then have to pay the full exam fee to take it again.
Microsoft also updates exam content. Most role exams received an update during 2026 with added artificial intelligence topics, and several study guides carry skills-measured dates during the year, so the practice questions you used six months ago may not match the live exam.
Renewal also works as a refresher. The renewal assessment samples current content from the same objectives as the full exam, so candidates who treat it as a formality often find the skills sharper than when they first certified.
Fundamentals credentials skip all of this. They never expire and they never need a renewal assessment.
How do you pass a Microsoft exam on the first attempt?
Use the free practice assessment on Microsoft Learn under timed conditions, because it is the closest thing to the real exam.
Microsoft publishes a free practice assessment for most exams, including AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-400, AZ-900, DP-300, MD-102 and the new AZ-802. The questions mirror the real item types and the scoring, so a candidate who cannot clear the practice under time pressure will struggle in the real room.
Read the official study guide for your exam rather than a generic exam dump. Each study guide lists the skills measured and the date they were last updated, which tells you what the live exam covers right now.
Budget two to three weeks of focused study for an Associate exam and use the $99 Fundamentals as your diagnostic. If the practice assessment comes back weak in one domain, spend your remaining time there rather than re-reading the whole syllabus.
Time pressure is the most common reason candidates miss the pass mark, because the pass mark is 700 out of 1000 on a scaled score. Practice under the same limit fixes the pacing that a knowledge-only revision misses.
The Microsoft Learn practice assessment library lists every available assessment and its exam, which is the fastest way to start.
What are the next steps to pick the right Microsoft certification?
Pick the job description first, then take the Fundamentals exam for that platform, then the Associate exam that matches the role.
Open three to five job postings for the role you want and read the certification requirements. That is more reliable than any general guide, because employers specify exact exam codes and the postings show which ones actually get filtered on.
Then register for the $99 Fundamentals exam and sit the free practice assessment first. If the practice result is strong and the subject holds your attention, move to the Associate exam.
Plan your calendar around the renewal cycle rather than the exam day. Once you hold a role credential, put the renewal assessment in your calendar for the month before it expires, and it costs nothing.
Keep the study guides current, because exam content moves during the year. Our guide to what the retired AZ-204 exam cost explains what happened to that credential and where it leads now.
If you are choosing between clouds, our guide to AWS certification cost and exam fees shows the same two-tier structure, which makes the comparison between vendors straightforward.
Verify current requirements. Microsoft retires exams and adds replacements several times a year. Confirm the exam code and price on the official certification page before you register.
