Canada MSc Cybersecurity programmes and what each costs

Canadian MSc Cybersecurity programmes split into three delivery models. The 1-year course-based model (TMU MC) targets working professionals seeking rapid credential completion. The 2-year course-based model (Western, Queen's) balances depth with a slightly longer timeline. The 2-year research model (Concordia Master of Engineering, UBC MDS-CS Cyber) targets students progressing to PhD or industry research roles (Statistics Canada + TMU + Western + Queen's + Concordia admissions, 2026).

School and programme	Duration	Domestic tuition CAD	International tuition CAD	Best fit
TMU Master of Cybersecurity (MC)	1 year course-based	$21,500	$41,500	Working professionals seeking rapid completion
Western MSc Cybersecurity	2 years course-based	Per-year (~$12,000-$15,000)	Per-year (~$30,000-$40,000)	Ontario-based cyber professionals
Queen's Master of Cybersecurity	2 years course-based	Per-year (~$12,000-$15,000)	Per-year (~$30,000-$40,000)	Ontario-based cyber professionals
Concordia Master of Engineering in ISS	2 years course-based	Per-year (~$10,000-$13,000)	Per-year (~$25,000-$35,000)	Montreal-based bilingual candidates
University of Calgary MSc Cybersecurity	2 years course-based	Per-year (~$10,000-$13,000)	Per-year (~$25,000-$35,000)	Calgary energy-sector cyber professionals
Royal Military College of Canada MSc	2 years research	Free for military	Not applicable	Serving Canadian Armed Forces members

TMU's $21,500 CAD domestic fee is the strongest cost-per-month value in Canadian MSc Cybersecurity, given the 1-year course-based delivery. The trade-off is OSAP ineligibility, which forces students to fund tuition through employer sponsorship, personal savings, or private loans. Western and Queen's are stronger options for OSAP-eligible students, given the residency-based tuition model and 2-year programme structure that aligns with provincial loan funding windows (Statistics Canada + TMU + Western + Queen's admissions, 2026).

TMU Master of Cybersecurity deep-dive

TMU's MC is the strongest value choice for Ontario-based working professionals. The 1-year course-based programme delivers foundational cybersecurity technical skills plus business and management context through the Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst partnership. The Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies administers the programme. Core courses include Fundamentals of Information Assurance, Cybersecurity Risk Management, Cyber Frameworks Governance and Compliance, Security Architecture, and Fundamentals of Security Technology. Students complete 3 elective credits in addition to the 5 core courses (TMU Graduate Cybersecurity admissions page, September 2026).

The OSAP ineligibility is the trade-off. TMU's MC is not funded by the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities, so students are not eligible for OSAP or OGS. The programme is positioned for working professionals with employer sponsorship or personal savings. International applicants are accepted but pay $41,500 CAD and are not eligible for OGS. The programme's strength is the 1-year duration, which minimises the time out of the workforce for Canadian professionals targeting cyber leadership roles (TMU Graduate Cybersecurity admissions, 2026).

Application timing and entry requirements

Application timing is competitive for September entry. TMU MC has September intake only; applications for Fall 2026 are now closed. Western and Queen's accept September and January intakes. Concordia's Master of Engineering ISS accepts September, January, and May intakes. International applicants should target applications 8 to 12 months before the intended start date to allow time for credential evaluation through WES (World Education Services), English proficiency testing, and admission decision (TMU + Western + Queen's + Concordia admissions, 2026).

Entry requirements across the four major Canadian MSc Cybersecurity programmes are similar: 4-year undergraduate degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, or closely related field with minimum B average (GPA 3.0/4.0 or equivalent). Some programmes accept non-CS degrees with demonstrated programming experience plus relevant professional experience (typically 3 to 5 years). English proficiency for international applicants is IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 or TOEFL 92 to 100. TMU's MC requires a four-year bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or a related field (Statistics Canada + TMU + Western + Queen's + Concordia, 2026).

Provincial accreditation and Statistics Canada benchmarks

Canadian universities are accredited by provincial quality assurance bodies, not by a federal agency. Universities Canada is the national association but does not accredit individual institutions. Provincial bodies include PEQAB (Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board) in Ontario, DQAB (Degree Quality Assessment Board) in British Columbia, Campus Alberta Quality Council in Alberta, and the Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire in Quebec. International applicants should verify provincial recognition before enrolling to ensure their degree will be recognized in their home country (Universities Canada + PEQAB + DQAB + CAQC, 2026).

Statistics Canada 2026 published salary data shows the relevant payback math. The median annual salary for Canadian cybersecurity professionals is $105,000 CAD nationally; the median for Toronto-based cybersecurity professionals is $115,000 CAD; the median for Ottawa-based government cybersecurity professionals is $115,000 to $125,000 CAD. Senior cybersecurity roles in financial services and tech reach $160,000 to $200,000 CAD. The MSc Cybersecurity premium typically delivers a $25,000 to $40,000 CAD annual salary uplift within 2 to 4 years of graduation (Statistics Canada Table 14-10-0440-01, 2026).

Hidden costs and application timing

Three line items push the real first-year cost above the headline tuition. Application fees for Canadian MSc Cybersecurity programmes typically run $100 to $150 CAD per application. International credential evaluation through WES (World Education Services) costs $200 to $400 CAD plus transcript translation fees. IELTS or TOEFL for international applicants costs $300 to $400 CAD. Course materials and software licences (Python environments, Wireshark, Kali Linux, Cisco Packet Tracer, cloud compute credits) typically add $300 to $800 CAD per year (TMU + Western + Queen's + Concordia admissions, 2026).

OSAP funding windows for graduate students differ by province. OSAP provides up to $15,000 CAD per year for graduate students with a maximum lifetime cap of $30,000 CAD for two-year programmes. The application timing for OSAP is typically June to August before the September start, with funding disbursed in September. International students at OSAP-ineligible programmes (like TMU MC) should plan alternative funding through employer sponsorship, personal savings, MPOWER Financing (international students), or Prodigy Finance (TMU + Western + Queen's + OSAP, 2026).
