Quick Answer

Canadian clocks fall back one hour at 2:00 AM local time on Sunday, November 1, 2026 across most provinces. Saskatchewan and Yukon stay on their year-round standard times.

The change applies to BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland. Spring forward in 2027 is Sunday, March 8, 2027 (Canadian National Research Council, 2026).

Yukon's permanent MST

Yukon is the only Canadian territory on permanent standard time by deliberate policy. Since November 1, 2020, Yukon has stayed on Mountain Standard Time (MST, UTC-7) year-round.

Before 2020, Yukon followed the same DST pattern as the rest of Canada. The territory's government passed the Time Act amendment in 2019 to move to permanent MST, citing research on circadian rhythm and the negative health effects of biannual clock changes.

The practical effect is that Yukon aligns with Pacific Daylight Time (PDT, UTC-7) in summer and Mountain Standard Time (MST, UTC-7) in winter - it stays on the same offset year-round (Yukon Department of Health, 2026).

Saskatchewan's permanent CST

Saskatchewan has been on Central Standard Time (CST, UTC-6) year-round since 1966. The province does not observe DST.

Historical context: in 1966, Saskatchewan cities chose to remain on year-round standard time after a province-wide referendum. The decision has held since, though there are periodic calls for change - notably a 2019 government survey showing 60% public support for switching to permanent DST.

Saskatchewan residents commuting from Alberta or BC see a one-hour time change twice a year that residents of Regina and Saskatoon do not (Canadian National Research Council, 2026).

Quebec Cree territory exception

Most of Quebec follows Eastern Time with DST, but seven Cree communities along James Bay stay on Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC-5) year-round. The communities are: Waskaganish, Waswanipi, Ouje-Bougoumou, Mistissini, Wemindji, Chisasibi, and Eastmain.

The arrangement was negotiated in the 1970s James Bay Agreement and remains in place (Statistics Canada, 2026).

The Cree communities coordinate school schedules with the rest of Quebec but operate on permanent EST. The arrangement is not widely known outside Quebec and frequently confuses scheduling software and travel-booking systems that assume Quebec is uniformly on Eastern Time with DST.

What changes after the fall-back

Toronto sunset shifts from about 6:05 PM EDT on October 31 to about 5:05 PM EST on November 1 - a 60-minute earlier sunset.

Toronto sunrise shifts from about 7:50 AM EDT on October 31 to about 6:50 AM EST on November 1 - a 60-minute earlier sunrise.

Vancouver sunset moves from about 5:55 PM PDT on October 31 to about 4:55 PM PST on November 1. Vancouver sunrise moves from about 7:55 AM PDT to about 6:55 AM PST.

Net effect across Canada: more morning light, less evening light, until the spring forward on March 8, 2027 (Royal Observatory of Canada, 2026).

Health and sleep impact

Canadian research on DST transitions has been active since the 1990s. The fall-back produces measurable but smaller effects than the spring forward.

Statistics Canada and Health Canada published a 2017 study on DST and cardiovascular events (Health Canada, 2026).

The study found: an 8% increase in heart attack incidence on the Monday after the spring forward. A 5% increase on the Monday after the fall back. A measurable but smaller increase in stroke incidence across the same windows.

The fall-back also correlates with: a temporary 10-15% increase in depressive episodes, particularly in northern latitudes; disrupted sleep for two to three nights; and an uptick in cluster headaches for sensitive individuals (Health Canada, 2026).

Code and systems

Canadian developers work with both Python's `zoneinfo` (or `pytz` legacy) and JavaScript's `Intl.DateTimeFormat`. Both handle the November 1 transition correctly with current tzdata.

Edge cases to test: cron jobs scheduled at 1:00-2:00 AM local time on November 1 (the repeated hour - local clock shows 1:30 AM twice). Timezone conversions between EDT and EST in the same code path (use UTC as the canonical store).

User-input forms that capture "1:30 AM" without a date are ambiguous during fall-back and need date disambiguation.

The IANA `Canada/Eastern`, `Canada/Central`, `Canada/Pacific`, `Canada/Atlantic`, and `Canada/Newfoundland` zone identifiers handle all provincial time zones correctly. For Saskatchewan specifically, use `America/Regina` or `America/Swift_Current` to get year-round CST without DST transitions (IANA tzdata, 2026).

Travel and meetings

After November 1, 2026, Canadian business hours shift by one hour against most non-North American trading partners.

A 9:00 AM EST Toronto meeting is: 7:00 AM in San Francisco (PST, UTC-8), 2:00 PM in London (GMT, UTC+0), 11:00 PM in Tokyo (JST, UTC+9), and 1:00 PM in Frankfurt (CET, UTC+1).

Cross-border US-Canada coordination is unchanged - both countries fall back on November 1, so the New York-Toronto business day overlap stays at 9:00 AM-5:00 PM local for both.

Bill C-289 and the path to permanent time

Bill C-289, the National Standards of Practice for Permanent Standard Time Act, was introduced in the House of Commons in 2022. The bill proposes moving Canada to permanent standard time year-round and eliminating DST.

Bill C-289 would mirror the Yukon approach across the country - stay on standard time year-round and stop the spring forward.

Critics argue that permanent standard time would shift summer sunrise even later than the current summer DST sunset. The worst effects would hit western parts of each time zone. Alberta and Saskatchewan legislators have been the loudest opponents.

The bill passed second reading in November 2022 but has not advanced since. Provincial opposition, particularly from BC and Ontario, and lack of Senate calendar time have stalled progress.

Canadian medical associations including the Canadian Sleep Society and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society have endorsed permanent standard time. The current schedule remains in place (Parliament of Canada, 2026).

Spring forward 2027

Canadian clocks spring forward one hour at 2:00 AM local time on Sunday, March 8, 2027. DST resumes across all observing provinces.

Saskatchewan stays on CST and Yukon stays on MST year-round. Newfoundland moves from NST to NDT. The cycle repeats under current Canadian law (Canadian National Research Council, 2026).
