CES 2027 AI Preview What to Expect in Las Vegas January

CES 2027 (January 6-9, Las Vegas) will showcase four major AI themes: agent operating systems, on-device LLMs under 4B parameters, consumer humanoid robots, and AI glasses (CES, 2026). Expected attendance 130,000+ with NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, Samsung, LG, and Sony as headline exhibitors.

Data last verified September 9, 2026 from CES schedule.

Four themes

1. AI Agent Operating Systems — the first wave of "agent OS" devices. Laptops, phones, and home hubs with built-in AI agents that can take multi-step actions across apps. Microsoft Copilot+ PCs, Apple Intelligence 2, and Google's Gemini Spark ecosystem lead (CES, 2026).

2. On-device LLMs (sub-4B parameters) — efficient models for always-on AI without cloud round-trip. Apple's 3B foundation model, Google's Gemma 2 Nano, Microsoft's Phi-3.5-mini, and Meta's Llama 4 1B are the standard. Target: under 5W power, sub-100ms latency.

3. Consumer humanoid robots — the humanoid market shifts from industrial pilots to consumer. Tesla Optimus Gen 3 (target $20K), Xpeng IRON, Figure 02, and Apptronik Apollo all expected to ship or show consumer variants.

4. AI glasses replacing smartphone AR — Meta Ray-Ban Display 2, Apple Vision Pro 2, Samsung Galaxy Glasses, and Google Glasses 2 all expected. AI glasses are the new AR platform.

AI agent OS deep dive

The biggest software story at CES 2027 will be agent operating systems. Three contenders:

• Microsoft Copilot+ OS — recall, click-to-do, live captions, semantic search across devices.
• Apple Intelligence 2 — agentic Siri (powered by Gemini + Apple Private Cloud Compute), on-device foundation model.
• Google Gemini Spark OS — Android XR + Chrome OS Gemini integration.

Each vendor ships an agent framework + reference hardware. Open-source alternatives (Ubuntu, Fedora, KDE Plasma) are integrating agents via LangChain, OpenClaw, and NemoClaw.

Why this matters

CES 2027 marks the shift from "AI on screens" to "AI in the world." Humanoid robots, AI glasses, and agent OSes are the three platforms that will define consumer AI in 2027-2030. For developers and businesses, the agent OS platform war matters most — Microsoft, Apple, and Google are each betting their OS is the agent era's "Windows" or "iOS."

What to expect at CES 2027

CES 2027 (Jan 6-9, Las Vegas Convention Center) will showcase:

1. AI agent OSes - first wave of agent OS laptops, phones, and home devices.
2. On-device LLMs - sub-4B parameter models running on NPU silicon.
3. Consumer humanoids - Tesla Optimus Gen 3, Xpeng IRON, Figure 02, Apptronik Apollo.
4. AI glasses - Meta Ray-Ban Display 2, Apple Vision Pro 2, Samsung Galaxy Glasses.
5. AI silicon - Rubin Ultra, MI400, Snapdragon X3.

Why CES is shifting from TV + phones to AI

CES 2010s: dominated by TVs and smartphones. CES 2020s: dominated by AI assistants (Alexa, Google Assistant). CES 2027: dominated by AI agents + on-device LLMs + embodied AI.

The shift reflects the broader transition from cloud AI to edge AI.

What about humanoids

Consumer humanoid market by end-2027:

• Tesla Optimus Gen 3 - target $20,000, mass production at Giga Texas.
• Xpeng IRON - target $20,000, Q1 2027 consumer launch.
• Figure 02 - enterprise/B2B focus at $50K+.
• Apptronik Apollo - enterprise/B2B at $50K+, Mercedes-Benz partnership.
• Unitree H1 - research + niche applications at $16K.

What about AI glasses

AI glasses are the next computing platform:

• Meta Ray-Ban Display 2 - Q4 2026 launch, always-on AI assistant + camera.
• Apple Vision Pro 2 - Q1 2027, lighter and cheaper ($2,500 vs $3,500 Vision Pro 1).
• Samsung Galaxy Glasses - CES 2027 launch, Android XR 2 platform.
• Google Glasses 2 - Q1 2027, Gemini Spark integration.

Why CES 2027 matters

CES is the bellwether for consumer AI. The 2027 show will set the narrative for:

• Agent OS platform wars (Microsoft vs Apple vs Google).
• Humanoid consumer viability.
• AI glasses as the post-smartphone AR platform.
• On-device AI as the privacy + cost answer to cloud.

For enterprises planning 2027-2028 AI deployments, CES 2027 announcements drive the device + silicon roadmap.

Why this matters for the broader AI ecosystem

This announcement fits into a larger pattern of the 2026 AI industry consolidation wave. Frontier labs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, NVIDIA, xAI) are racing to capture the next platform shift while regulators, open-source competitors, and enterprise customers apply pressure from all sides. The three forces shaping the industry in 2026-2028 are: (1) inference cost compression (Vera Rubin driving 35x token cost reduction), (2) agent capability maturity (GPT-6 Astra, Claude Opus 4.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash all shipped in 2026), and (3) sovereign AI deployment (US Stargate, Saudi HUMAIN, UAE G42, India IndiaAI collectively committing over $200B).

For developers and businesses, the practical implications are concrete. Enterprise AI deployments are moving from pilot (2024-2025) to production (2026-2027). The key questions for any CTO evaluating AI in late 2026: which model(s) for which workload, how to handle data residency, how to manage agent risk, and how to measure ROI. The answers vary by industry - financial services prioritises compliance and auditability, healthcare prioritises privacy and FDA pathways, retail prioritises personalisation and unit economics.

What to watch next

Three upcoming events will validate or revise this analysis:

1. NVIDIA GTC Berlin (Oct 20-22, 2026) - European AI sovereignty + Vera Rubin EU rollout.
2. Made by Google October 2026 - Pixel 11, Gemini Spark 2, Android XR 2 launch.
3. AWS re:Invent (Nov 30 - Dec 4, 2026) - Trainium 4 announcement + AI infrastructure roadmap.
