Two things decide the cfa exam cost: how early you register and how many times you sit each level. CFA Institute puts the exam fees for all three levels between $3,520 and $4,570 for a clean run with no retakes. Membership dues, prep courses, and travel sit on top of that. By the end of this guide you will have a total spend table for the whole three level path, the charter rules you must clear, and a realistic timeline for finishing.
What are the CFA exam fees for each level in 2026?
CFA Institute lists two price tiers for every exam window. Early registration is the cheaper tier and it closes first. Standard registration costs more. There is no late tier, so waiting past the standard deadline simply means missing the window.
For 2026, Level I and Level II cost $1,140 at early registration and $1,490 at standard registration. Level III costs $1,240 early and $1,590 standard. Every level therefore costs $350 more if you register late.
The one-time enrollment fee is gone. CFA Institute removed the $350 enrollment fee on April 29, 2025 for exams seated from February 2026 onward, so new candidates pay the exam fee and nothing else when they sign up.
Our CFA Level 1 Cost 2026 Fees Changed Complete Breakdown page covers the Level 1 numbers in full, including deferrals and add-ons. This guide covers the whole three level path instead of repeating that page.
| Level | Early registration | Standard registration | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level I | $1,140 | $1,490 | $350 |
| Level II | $1,140 | $1,490 | $350 |
| Level III | $1,240 | $1,590 | $350 |
| One-time enrollment fee | $0 | $0 | Removed April 2025 |
How much does the full three level path cost in total?
CFA Institute publishes the total on its own dates and fees page. It says it costs $3,520 to $4,570 to complete all three levels and become a charterholder, depending on whether you register during the early or standard period.
That range covers exam fees only, on a first attempt pass at every level. Here is the fuller picture with the extras most candidates actually pay.
| Path | What it includes | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest clean run | All three levels at early registration, no retakes | $3,520 |
| Standard clean run | All three levels at standard registration | $4,570 |
| One missed early deadline | Two levels early, one level standard | $3,870 |
| Cheapest run plus one retake | All early plus one extra Level I attempt | $4,660 |
| Cheapest run plus dues and prep | Clean run, $299 CFA Institute dues, $699 prep course | $4,518 |
| Cheapest run plus dues and full prep | Clean run, $299 CFA Institute dues, $999 prep course | $4,818 |
Two items stay outside every table because they change by person. Local society dues are set by each society, and CFA Society Milwaukee lists $125 a year for charterholders. Travel to the test center depends on where you live, and some candidates add remote delivery.
What do you have to do to earn the charter?
Passing the exams is only half of it. To carry the CFA designation you also need to meet the membership rules.
CFA Institute lists the charterholder requirements clearly. Complete the program, complete 4,000 hours of eligible work experience over a minimum of 36 months, and provide three professional references. If one of your references is a professional member of the local society you apply to, two references are enough. The experience can be earned before, during, or after the program.
You also need to qualify for enrollment before you can register for Level I. CFA Institute asks for a completed bachelor's degree, or qualifying undergraduate status inside a 23 month window before your graduation month, or 4,000 hours of professional work experience and higher education over at least three sequential years. The CFA Program policies page has the exact wording for each route.
Plan the order carefully. Work experience hours and education hours cannot overlap, so a student route and a work route are separate paths rather than something you can blend.
What do the practical skills modules cost?
Each level includes a Practical Skills Module, which is a guided set of case studies and questions that show you how the work is actually done. You must complete at least one module at each level before your exam result is released.
The cost is already inside your exam fee. CFA Institute states that the Learning Ecosystem is the platform where you access the curriculum, mock exams, and the Practical Skills Modules, and that you keep access for the entire time you are a registered candidate. You also get 1,000 or more practice questions and two official mock exams inside that platform.
The optional extra is the Practice Pack. It adds more practice questions, extra official mock exams, and one Prometric mock exam that simulates the exam day experience. You can buy it separately inside the Learning Ecosystem once you are registered.
What happens if you fail an exam?
Every retake is another full exam fee, so a failed level is the biggest budget risk in the program. The cheapest Level I retake is $1,140 and the standard price is $1,490.
CFA Institute allows each level twice per calendar year, but not in consecutive windows and not in windows six months or less apart. There is a hard cap of six attempts per level. Plan your dates so a fail does not push you out of the program.
Pass rates explain why people budget for two attempts. The CFA Institute exam page lists 10 year average pass rates of 41 percent for Level I, 45 percent for Level II, and 52 percent for Level III. Our CFA Level 1 Pass Rate by Topic 2026 Analysis breaks down where candidates lose points in Level I so you can aim your study time.
Results arrive within 5 to 7 weeks of your exam and module completion for Level I and Level II, and within 6 to 8 weeks for Level III. Those quiet weeks are the right time to book the next window.
How do you fund the CFA program?
Most candidates do not fund this alone, so ask your employer early. Many firms pay exam fees and give you study days. If you pay yourself, the order of spending matters. Pay exam fees on time, add the $299 CFA Institute membership in the year you join, and buy a prep course only after you test your own baseline.
Prep prices vary by vendor. UWorld lists $299 for study guides, $399 for its Core Essentials package, $699 for the Advanced Prep Course, and $999 for the Elite Full Course with printed books and live expert support.
Membership has two parts. CFA Institute charges $299 for the full membership year from July 1 to June 30, and new members pay a prorated amount for the months that are left. Local society membership is also required for charterholders, and each society sets its own dues on top of that.
Study time is another cost. If you want structured hours and a finance focus, our Online MBA Finance CFA Track 2026 Programs guide compares the programs that bundle CFA preparation with a finance MBA.
Other credentials fit beside the CFA rather than replace it. Our CAPM Certification Cost 2026 Complete Breakdown covers the project management route for finance students, and for a UK housing finance route our CeMAP Exam Guide 2026 UK Mortgage Advisor Qualification explains the qualification and its requirements.
What does the charter lead to?
The letters only carry weight once you have experience behind them, so budget two to four years for the full path. Most people clear the work requirement in parallel with the later levels.
For a sense of the market on the other side, the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists financial examiners at a 2025 median pay of $94,160 a year, which is $45.27 an hour, and projects 9 percent job growth from 2025 to 2035. That is much faster than average, and the roles that ask for a charter sit in the same band.
Now that you know the spend, put the three level total on a calendar. Register early for each window, keep your 180 study hours per level on a schedule, and check the work requirement every six months so the charter does not wait on you at the end.
