Choosing a csm vs psm certification comes down to two decisions: which body you pick and whether you buy a live course or study alone.
The cheapest route on either side sits under $300, while the priciest classroom package runs close to $2,500. By the end of this guide you will know which exam fits your budget and your study style.
A Scrum Master is the person on a team who protects the process and removes blockers. Two organizations certify that role, Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org.
They sell very different products. One credential is built around a classroom course. The other is built around a test you can book on your own.
Both bodies are well known and both exams are respected. The difference shows up in your bank account and your calendar, so here is the fee-by-fee comparison.
How do csm vs psm certification fees compare?
Scrum Alliance CSM
A Scrum Alliance Certified ScrumMaster, or CSM, comes with a required course that each trainer prices. Scrum Alliance lists the course range at $250 to $2,495 and notes that trainers set the final figure. The cheapest sessions are online. The priciest are small in-person classes with premium trainers.
Scrum.org PSM I
A Scrum.org Professional Scrum Master I, or PSM I, is sold as an assessment only. Scrum.org charges $200 per attempt, and no course is required. You buy an assessment code, sit the test online, and the certification is yours for life.
That is the core of csm vs psm certification cost. A CSM bundles a course seat and two test attempts into one price. A PSM I charges one flat fee for the test and leaves the study material to you.
| Cost item | Scrum Alliance CSM | Scrum.org PSM I |
|---|---|---|
| Base price | $250 to $2,495 for the required course | $200 per assessment attempt |
| Course required | Yes, 16 hours with a Certified Scrum Trainer | No |
| Attempts included | Two within 90 days of the course | One per paid code |
| Extra attempt | $25 | $200 for a new code |
| Certificate life | Two years, then renewal | Lifetime, no renewal fee |
How are the two exams different in format?
The CSM test has 50 multiple-choice questions and takes one hour. You must answer 37 correctly, which is a 74% pass mark. The test runs online, and Scrum Alliance does not proctor it in a live room. You get 90 days and two attempts to pass after finishing the course.
The PSM I assessment is harder in one clear way. It has 80 questions in 60 minutes and needs an 85% score, which means 68 correct answers. The assessment is open book, so you can look things up, but you have about 45 seconds per question to do it.
A third PSM I attempt costs the full $200 because you need a fresh assessment code. A third CSM attempt costs $25 once your two free ones are used.
What do you have to do before you can register?
For the CSM, the course is the entry ticket. You take 16 hours of training from a Certified Scrum Trainer, and only then does your trainer open your test account. You cannot book the CSM exam on your own at any price.
For PSM I there is no gate. Scrum.org states plainly that taking a class is not required to sit an assessment. You can study the Scrum Guide on your own, practise with the free Scrum Open assessment, and book the test whenever you feel ready.
You can still buy a class. Scrum.org sells a two-day live Professional Scrum Master course for 1,099 euros. The early bird price is 899 euros, and the fee includes two PSM I attempts. A Professional Scrum Master Advanced class costs 1,299 euros.
How do the renewal rules change the total cost?
This is where the two credentials separate most clearly over time. A CSM expires every two years.
To renew it you need 20 Scrum Education Units, which measure hours of continuing learning, plus a $100 renewal fee to Scrum Alliance. You cannot skip the fee if you already have the units.
There is a free route as well. Take any other Scrum Alliance certification course and your existing credentials renew automatically. That makes an Advanced Certified ScrumMaster at $699 a practical way to renew your CSM and add a new badge at the same time.
A PSM I never expires. Scrum.org sells it as a lifetime certification with no annual renewal fee. Higher levels work the same way, with PSM II at $250 and PSM III at $500, each a lifetime badge.
Run the numbers over five years. The CSM route is one course fee plus two renewals at $100, unless another Scrum Alliance course covers them. The PSM route is a single $200 fee unless you buy a class first.
Which certification do employers recognize more?
Both badges are widely known in agile work. The difference is what they prove. A CSM proves you sat in a two-day course taught by a Scrum Alliance trainer. A PSM I proves you passed an 80-question test on Scrum knowledge.
Employers that run formal agile coaching programs often name Scrum Alliance credentials in job descriptions, because the course format is easy to audit. Employers that value tested knowledge tend to favor Scrum.org, which was founded by Ken Schwaber, one of the original creators of Scrum.
Scrum.org reported 775,260 PSM I badge holders in October 2026, which shows how far the assessment-only model has spread. The CSM has been in the market longer and still turns up on many US job ads.
Do your own search. Type the exact credential name into the job boards you would use. Count which one appears more often in the listings you would really apply to. That search beats any general rule.
Which one should you pick for your first Scrum Master role?
Pick PSM I if you are on a tight budget, you can study on your own, and you want a credential that never expires. The assessment is open book and the code stays valid until you use it, so you choose the date rather than a training calendar.
The CSM makes more sense if you want the classroom experience, a named training record, or a market that names Scrum Alliance credentials. You also get two attempts and a trainer who can answer questions in person.
One last thing. In a csm vs psm certification decision for a first job, check whether the role is really about Scrum. Agile versus DevOps key differences explains where the boundary sits, and platform teams often need a different credential.
If you are moving toward delivery leadership, the best PMP prep course comparison for 2026 covers the next step. For service management roles, the ITIL cost guide shows what that credential costs on the same budget.
Certified Scrum Master cost 2026 goes deeper on the CSM side. Large organizations that scale Scrum often ask for SAFe next, and the SAFe certification cost breakdown covers that track.
