Common Interview Questions for Cyber Security Internships
- What is the difference between symmetric and asymmetric encryption? Symmetric = one key (AES); Asymmetric = public/private key pair (RSA).
- Explain the CIA triad. Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability.
- What is a buffer overflow? Writing beyond allocated memory — can lead to code execution.
- How does TLS work? TLS handshake establishes a session key via asymmetric crypto, then symmetric encryption for the session.
- What is SQL injection? Malicious SQL inserted via user input to manipulate database queries.
- Describe a recent security incident. Be prepared to discuss current events — Log4Shell, MOVEit, etc.
- What is your experience with Linux? Be honest. List specific commands and tools you have used.
- Why cyber security? Have a genuine answer — passion, curiosity, or specific incident.
Prepare answers to these before your interview. Practise explaining concepts simply.
