How much does a Dollar General sales associate earn per week and per year?
At $10 an hour, a 32 hour week brings $320 gross, and a 40 hour week $400. At the $11 top of the entry band, the same schedule pays $352 to $440 a week.
A part-time associate working 24 hours a week at $10 earns about $12,480 across 52 weeks, and that is the number most entry associates plan around while school, childcare, or a second job fills the rest of the week.
Full-time hours add roughly $6,000 a year over a part-time schedule at the entry rate. Over time the annual review is worth more than that step, which is why tenure usually pays better here than a raise negotiation would.
None of those figures include the associate discount, which can be worth several hundred dollars a year on a weekly shop, or the paid vacation most full time associates accrue. Add both back before comparing this job with a chain that pays slightly more and nothing else.

| 24 hours a week | $240 | $264 | $360 |

| 40 hours a week | $400 | $440 | $600 |
| 32 hours, annualized over 52 weeks | $16,640 | $18,304 | $24,960 |
What benefits do Dollar General sales associates get, and who qualifies?
The company publishes a long benefits menu, and eligibility rules decide which parts a sales associate actually receives. The 401(k) company match is dollar for dollar up to 5 percent of what you contribute, starting after one year of service with 1,000 hours, and you own the match immediately.
Eligible full-time associates can access medical plan options, supplemental health benefits, a health savings account option, dental and vision insurance, life and disability insurance, paid vacation and holidays, paid time off, adoption assistance, and paid parental leave.
Part-time associates have a narrower package. They can still join the 401(k), use the discount and education assistance, and access early pay through Legion Instant Pay or Money Network, but health insurance and paid leave are generally not part of the deal.
Early pay matters more than it looks. Legion Instant Pay and Money Network let eligible associates reach part of each paycheck after a shift, which smooths the gap between a pay date and the cost of living week to week.

Can a part-time sales associate really become a store manager in three years?
Dollar General says yes, and it publishes the claim itself: on average a part-time sales associate can advance to store manager in three years without a college degree. The company also reports that the large majority of its promotions happen from within.
That is the real case for the job. The starting rate is low, the ceiling on the hourly ladder is close, and the reward comes from moving up into management rather than from staying on the counter.
The route is not automatic, and it is not fast for everyone. Assistant manager slots are limited, they are often filled by people with more tenure, and the training happens largely on the job. Ask how many associates in your store have moved into management recently.
Ask your store manager which openings are coming up and what the training path looks like. The number of assistant manager slots per store is small, so the competition is real, and a part-time schedule is harder to build a management record on than a full-time one.
How does Dollar General pay compare with other discount and department stores?
Dollar General is one of the lowest-paid national chains at the front end. Our TJ Maxx retail associate pay guide and Macy's retail sales associate coverage both start around $15 an hour, and Nordstrom pays $15 to $20 an hour for base plus commission.
The gap is stark in the entry band and smaller further up the ladder. A Dollar General store manager earns $40,000 to $60,000 a year, which is competitive with assistant manager roles at department stores that pay their front end $15 an hour to begin with.
The trade is simple. You accept a lower hourly rate in exchange for a short, fast, and mostly internal path to a salaried job with benefits attached.
Worth noting that the discount and the education benefits are not consolation prizes. Several associates use the zero cost and discounted education programmes to finish a degree while they work, which is a slower return than a higher starting rate but a different kind of one.
How do you get hired at Dollar General, and what should you ask?
Apply to the store, not to the chain, and confirm three things before you accept: the hourly rate, the weekly hours, and the review date. Interviews are short and practical, and most stores hire continuously because turnover runs high.
Useful questions include whether the role is part-time or full-time, what the 30 hour threshold is for health insurance at that store, how quickly a lead sales associate opening usually appears, and whether the store covers the school holiday surge with extra hours.
Also ask about the schedule. Overnight stocking is common in this format and pays the same rate as a day shift, which makes it worth knowing before you accept the hours.
Seasonal hiring is another pressure point. Stores add hours for the back to school and holiday periods, and associates who can work those shifts build a relationship with the manager who controls the permanent schedule.
Is Dollar General a good first job?
It is a good first job for the reasons the company advertises: flexible hours, no experience needed, and a visible path to management. It is also one of the lowest-paying national chains, and anyone budgeting a rent payment on this wage needs to know that.
The sensible approach is to treat the first year as a paid training period with a real promotion goal, and to keep a second income source until the rate improves.
Employees who use the training and education benefits well move into assistant manager roles faster than employees who simply clock hours.
Either way, the honest comparison is not Dollar General against another chain on the first week. It is Dollar General against the alternative you would otherwise take, and against what you want the job to become.
Next steps
Read the store posting rather than a chain average, and treat the internal promotion path as part of the offer.
