Plan-by-plan breakdown

EKG technician certification in 2026 has two main credentials: NHA CET (Certified EKG Technician) and CCI CCT (Certified Cardiographic Technician). CET is the entry-level credential; CCT is the advanced credential requiring 2 years of experience or a CAAHEP-accredited cardiovascular program.

The NHA CET exam is the most common entry-level EKG certification. The exam is offered at Pearson VUE test centers and via online proctoring. Topics include cardiac anatomy and physiology, EKG machine operation, 12-lead placement, rhythm interpretation, common dysrhythmias, Holter monitoring basics, and stress testing fundamentals.

The CCI CCT exam is the advanced credential covering Holter monitoring, stress testing, pacemaker analysis, and event monitoring. CCT is required for senior EKG tech roles and is the gateway to RCIS (Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist) and RCS (Registered Cardiac Sonographer) credentials. CCT exam fee is $175-$250 depending on eligibility path (Graduate America, 2026).

EKG technician specialization and career paths

EKG technician is often the first credential in a cardiovascular career track. Many EKG technicians advance to specialized roles within 2-5 years: Holter monitor technician ($40K-$55K), stress test technician ($42K-$55K), cardiac catheterization lab technician ($50K-$70K with RCIS credential), echocardiography technician ($55K-$75K with RCS credential), and electrophysiology technician ($60K-$80K with RCES credential).

The cardiovascular technology career path is particularly attractive for EKG technicians because the specialization premiums are significant. A CET-certified EKG technician earns $30K-$48K; after 2 years of experience and CCT certification, salary jumps to $42K-$55K; after RCIS, $55K-$75K; after RCS or RCES, $55K-$80K.

Specialty certification timelines: CET (entry-level, 6-13 weeks) -> 1-2 years experience -> CCT (advanced) -> 1-2 years experience -> RCIS, RCS, or RCES (invasive/specialty). The 5-year path from entry-level EKG technician to senior cardiovascular technologist typically results in a $25K-$35K salary increase (BLS OES, May 2024).

Renewal and continuing education

NHA CET renewal is every 2 years at approximately $150-$185 + 10 CEUs. NPS CET renewal is $225 with the same bundled benefits as initial certification. CEU sources: NHA-approved online courses ($20-$100), employer-provided training (often free), conference attendance ($200-$500), and journal article quizzes ($10-$25).

For employed EKG technicians, hospital systems and cardiology practices typically offer free in-service CEU programs that satisfy the 10-CEU requirement. Self-employed or per-diem EKG techs typically pay $100-$200 for CEU courses every 2 years, plus the renewal fee.

CCT renewal is every 2-3 years depending on eligibility path, at $175-$250 + 16-20 CEUs. RCIS, RCS, and RCES renewals are every 2 years at $200-$300 + 16-24 CEUs (Graduate America, 2026).

Salary and career outlook

EKG technicians earn a median annual salary of $48,510 per BLS May 2024 OES for cardiovascular technologists and technicians (the broader category that includes EKG). Entry-level CET-certified EKG technicians earn $30,000-$48,000. Specialty cardiovascular technicians (CCT, RCIS, RCS) earn $48K-$72K.

Top-paying states for cardiovascular technicians in 2026: California $64,510, Oregon $61,440, Massachusetts $60,810, Alaska $58,920, Hawaii $58,130. Hospital employment is the highest-paying setting ($50K-$72K) followed by cardiology practices ($42K-$58K) and diagnostic laboratories ($38K-$50K).

BLS projects 8% job growth for cardiovascular technologists through 2032, faster than the average for all occupations. Demand drivers: aging population requiring more cardiovascular monitoring; expanded preventive cardiology; growing demand for Holter and event monitoring; physician shortage driving EKG technician scope of practice expansion (BLS OES, May 2024).

How EKG certification compares to other allied health certs

EKG technician certification is similar in scope and pay to phlebotomy (CPT) but with higher specialization premiums for cardiovascular career advancement. Comparison: EKG 6-13 weeks $1,000-$4,000 vs Phlebotomy 4-12 weeks $800-$5,000 vs Medical Assistant 8-24 weeks $900-$7,500.

EKG certification is the right starting credential for healthcare career-track students with an interest in cardiology, cardiovascular medicine, or cardiac surgery. The specialization path (CET -> CCT -> RCIS/RCS/RCES) is among the highest-paying allied health tracks, with senior specialists earning $70K-$90K+.

For medical assistants and CNAs seeking to add a credential with a strong salary premium, EKG certification is an excellent 6-13 week add-on. Many MA programs now include EKG training as part of the standard curriculum (CMA/EKG combo credential) (Graduate America, 2026).

CET certification is increasingly paired with CCMA, CPT, and CET+EKG combo credentials; expect more bundle programs by 2027.
CCT and RCIS specialization is growing rapidly in hospital cardiac catheterization labs; expect salary premiums for advanced cardiovascular credentials to increase through 2027.
AI-assisted EKG interpretation (AliveCor, Eko) is changing day-to-day work but not certification requirements; NHA is adding AI-related CEU content for 2027.
