A financial data analyst salary moves with two things: your state and your finance team. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median for financial and investment analysts at $102,740 for May 2025. State medians run from $69,030 in West Virginia to $127,930 in New York.
Below you will find the state table, the sector premium, the career bands, and how to use the numbers in a negotiation.
Most job titles hide the pay. An analyst might build a variance report for a regional bank or price credit risk for a trading desk. The federal occupation codes are more honest about this. Every figure below comes from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program for May 2025.
How much does a financial data analyst salary vary by state?
Here is the median annual pay for financial and investment analysts, with the middle half of each state distribution on either side of it. The spread between the highest and lowest state median is $58,900. Coastal finance hubs sit at the top, along with a few states rarely on a finance map.
| State | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York | $101,570 | $127,930 | $174,990 |
| Massachusetts | $90,190 | $111,040 | $161,530 |
| California | $86,440 | $109,110 | $146,840 |
| Washington | $82,200 | $107,210 | $136,340 |
| Illinois | $78,430 | $101,180 | $128,620 |
| Georgia | $78,380 | $99,420 | $129,420 |
| Texas | $77,350 | $99,150 | $126,200 |
| Florida | $70,710 | $94,490 | $119,710 |
| Ohio | $72,370 | $94,280 | $114,010 |
| Pennsylvania | $66,620 | $84,460 | $121,470 |
| West Virginia | $61,190 | $69,030 | $84,090 |
| United States | $79,290 | $102,740 | $133,340 |
Why New York and Massachusetts pull ahead
New York carries the largest concentration of financial and investment analysts in the country. Its median of $127,930 sits $25,190 above the national figure. The top ten percent in New York earn more than $225,000. That band covers hedge fund research, private equity, and sell-side analysis work.
Massachusetts follows at $111,040, supported by asset managers and insurers around Boston. California shows a $109,110 median. Even so, its top ten percent earn more than $198,000, because the tech sector buys a lot of analysis.
Where the money thins out
West Virginia shows a $69,030 median and a top ten percent below $120,000. Ohio and Florida sit in the mid $90,000s. Pennsylvania is the interesting one. Its $84,460 median hides a wide middle, because the 75th percentile runs above $121,000.
An offer there can be strong or ordinary depending on the employer. Check the city band before you accept a remote role that keeps you in a lower-cost market. The financial data analyst salary you target depends on which market you actually sit in.
Which finance sectors pay a premium over general analyst work?
Three occupation groups cover most people doing analytics with a finance bent. Their medians do not rank the same way in every state. Here are the same three columns for the states above.
| State | Financial and investment analysts | Management analysts | Data scientists |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $102,740 | $101,860 | $120,230 |
| New York | $127,930 | $112,250 | $130,460 |
| Massachusetts | $111,040 | $134,720 | $131,750 |
| California | $109,110 | $101,460 | $141,590 |
| Washington | $107,210 | $109,170 | $163,350 |
| Texas | $99,150 | $101,400 | $122,090 |
| West Virginia | $69,030 | $97,470 | $85,090 |
There is no simple finance premium. Nationwide, financial analysts and management analysts sit within $900 of each other. Data scientists earn about 17 percent more than financial analysts. State detail flips the ranking.
In Massachusetts, management analysts earn $134,720, well above the $111,040 for financial analysts. Consulting and research shop work dominates that state. Washington does the same in reverse, with data scientists at $163,350.
If your work is corporate planning, the management analyst band is the closer comparison. If you build models for a trading desk or pipelines for a bank, the data scientist band may fit better.

What does the entry to senior ladder look like inside one state?
Percentiles show the ladder better than a single median does. In New York, a quarter of financial and investment analysts earn $101,570 or less. Another quarter earn $174,990 or more, so the middle half spans about $73,000.
In California the same middle half spans $60,000. In West Virginia it spans only $23,000. A narrow band rewards specialization more than negotiation, so pick a lane and go deep in it.
Inside one employer the steps are clearer. Entry-level analysts build reports and support a forecast. Mid-career analysts own a model or a budget line. Senior analysts set the method and present to executives.
Corporate finance has its own published ladder. The Association for Financial Professionals puts an FP and A analyst at $74,000 to $98,500, a senior FP and A analyst at $90,000 to $120,000, and an FP and A manager at $120,000 to $150,667.
| Corporate finance role | Pay range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| FP and A analyst | $74,000 to $98,500 | Association for Financial Professionals |
| Senior FP and A analyst | $90,000 to $120,000 | Association for Financial Professionals |
| FP and A manager | $120,000 to $150,667 | Association for Financial Professionals |

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook shows which industries pay for which step. May 2025 medians were $124,370 for securities and financial investments and $101,760 for management of companies. Professional services came in at $101,540, credit intermediation at $100,120, and insurance carriers at $95,830.
Who hires financial data analysts and what do they pay?
About 377,200 people worked as financial and investment analysts in 2025. The Occupational Outlook Handbook counts 443,100 jobs in the wider financial analyst group. It expects 7 percent growth through 2035.
Employers cluster in a few places. Securities and financial investments hire 24 percent of the occupation. Professional and technical services hire 14 percent, and credit intermediation hires 12 percent. Management of companies hires 11 percent, and insurance hires 6 percent.
That mix explains why the sector spread shows up inside a single city. If you want the top of the range, securities and financial investments pay $124,370 at the median. If you want volume of openings, credit intermediation at $100,120 is one of the biggest employer groups.
The financial data analyst salary you can target depends on which of those groups you join. Lenders sit inside the credit intermediation group. Our ranking of the best rated mortgage lenders in 2026 shows what that employer side looks like from the outside.
For a wider view of the finance side, the financial analyst salary guide covers the whole occupation by level and employer type. The data analyst salary guide shows the analyst market state by state for readers coming from a non-finance track.
How do you use these numbers in a salary conversation?
Pick the number that matches your job before you name one. A bank analyst should anchor on the credit intermediation figure. Someone in corporate planning should use the management of companies figure. An individual contributor in a research shop should use the securities figure.
Then move from the median to a percentile, because that is where your experience belongs. New entrants can point to the 25th percentile of their state. People who own a model or a budget can point to the 75th.
Ask for base, bonus, and equity separately, because finance teams split pay in ways a single salary number hides. A $110,000 offer with a 20 percent target bonus is a different package from a $110,000 offer with none.
The spread is the story. A financial data analyst salary can land at $69,030 or at $127,930 depending on the state. The sector you join can swing the number by more than $28,000 in the same market.
Use the table, pick the band that matches your work, and let the employer's numbers meet you there.
