How do you run a mock interview with a chatbot?
Voice mode plus one structured prompt turns any free chatbot into a role-specific interviewer. The prompt does the work: role, question types, one question at a time, honest follow-ups.
- Paste the job description and ask for an interviewer persona.
- Require one question per turn, with a follow-up each time.
- Answer aloud in voice mode, never by typing.
- Ask for a scored debrief against the job's requirements at the end.
The spoken-answer rule is what makes this practice. Typed answers build editing skills; interviews reward retrieval under pressure, which only happens out loud.
Interview stages need different practice, and the table maps each stage to its free tool. Run them in the order a real process unfolds.
Round-by-round practice map (Source: author plan, November 2026)| Round | Practice with | Free depth |
|---|
| Behavioral screen | Teal InterviewAI | Unlimited on free tier |
| Delivery and presence | Yoodli | 5 sessions lifetime |
| Technical or case | Pramp peer mocks | Free matching |
| Final polish | ChatGPT or Gemini voice | Free tier |
Peer mocks on Pramp add what no AI provides: an unpredictable human who asks the follow-up you did not script. Technical students should book one weekly during search season.
How do you prepare answers without sounding scripted?
Prepare stories, not sentences. Six to eight stories covering leadership, failure, conflict and initiative bend to most behavioral questions, while memorized paragraphs shatter on follow-ups.
- Write each story in four bullets: situation, task, action, result.
- Rehearse from bullets, never from a script.
- Practice transitions, because the follow-up always comes.
- Record one answer and count the filler words.
Time every story at ninety seconds. Longer answers invite interruption in real interviews, and a kitchen timer is the only honest judge of whether your practice pace matches the room.
The bullet method pairs with the resume work from our resume builder guide, because every strong story should trace to a bullet an interviewer can point at.
What does a realistic prep week look like?
Five evenings cover a typical interview with the free stack. The plan assumes the interview landed this week and the job description is in hand.
Five-evening interview prep plan (Source: author plan, November 2026)| Evening | Work | Tool |
|---|
| 1 | Write the story bank from your resume | Resume bullets, no AI needed |
| 2 | Company research and role questions | ChatGPT or Gemini |
| 3 | Full behavioral mock, spoken | Teal InterviewAI |
| 4 | Delivery pass on weak answers | Yoodli session |
| 5 | Final mock and debrief | Voice mode, scored debrief |
Students interviewing for part-time and campus roles run a lighter version: evenings one, three and five only, which our campus jobs guide context fits well.
Next steps
Build the story bank before touching any tool, then practice aloud. These guides go deeper:
Interviews reward retrieval, not recall. Speak every answer aloud, and the free stack above will do the rest.
