How do AWS Educate and AWS Academy differ?
Three doors exist, and each fits a different student situation. The table sorts them by who qualifies and what each one hands over.
AWS student doors compared (Source: AWS education pages, checked November 2026)| Program | Who qualifies | What students get | Catch |
|---|
| Student Rewards | Verified higher education students | Skill Builder year, credits, exam voucher | Ladder takes about 90 days |
| AWS Educate | Learners 13 and up | Free courses, labs, badges, job board | No exam voucher |
| AWS Academy | Students at partner colleges | Skill Builder year, up to four voucher discounts | College must participate |
Check whether your college runs AWS Academy before registering anywhere, because the Academy route stacks with Student Rewards. Ask the CS department or the careers office; the answer takes one email.
High school students and early starters should treat Educate as the entry door, bank badges for a year, then claim Student Rewards the moment higher education verification becomes possible.
What does the free Skill Builder catalog cover?
The standard Skill Builder tier already holds more than 600 free digital courses, and verification upgrades the experience to premium. Free-tier learners keep access to the core cloud and AI fundamentals that beginners need.
Premium adds the parts that matter for exams: official practice question sets, labs in live AWS environments and game-based challenges. That is exactly what the twelve-month grant covers.
AWS Builder Center also runs guided workshops from levels 100 to 400 with free sandbox environments, per its students page, which supplements the self-paced catalog when you want instructor-style structure.
How do you prepare for the exam at $0?
An eight-week plan covers Cloud Practitioner without spending anything beyond the badges you were earning anyway. The phases below assume six evening hours weekly.
Eight-week Cloud Practitioner plan (Source: author plan built on AWS exam guide, November 2026)| Weeks | Focus | Output |
|---|
| 1 to 2 | Cloud concepts and security basics | Course badges |
| 3 to 4 | Core services hands-on with credits | Small S3 and EC2 practice |
| 5 to 6 | Practice question sets in premium tier | Consistent passing scores |
| 7 to 8 | Weak-domain review, then schedule | Voucher redeemed, exam booked |
Use the AWS credits on real resources rather than saving them. A tiny always-free-adjacent stack you built yourself teaches billing and security better than any slide deck, and billing questions appear on the exam.
What happens after Cloud Practitioner?
Associate certification is the next rung, and the direction you pick should follow the job posts you actually want. Solutions Architect fits design-minded paths, Developer fits coding-heavy roles, and SysOps fits operations.
Associate exams cost more than foundational ones, so the student voucher does not reach that far. By then, though, your cloud resume carries a proctored certificate, real hands-on hours and a project or two, which is what internship applications reward.
Read the current changes before booking anything, since AWS adjusted its exam landscape this fall in the ways our September 30 changes guide covers, and our AWS prerequisites guide lists what each level assumes.
