What inputs does the calculator need from you?
Clean inputs make clean taxes.
Gather these five fields for every transaction before opening any tool.
| Input | Why it matters |
|---|
| Date bought | Starts the holding clock |
| Date sold | Sets short or long term |
| Amount in coins | Tracks basis per unit |
| Dollar prices | Fixes proceeds and basis |
| Fees paid | Adjust both sides of the row |
Missing dates turn every gain into a guess. Most IRS notices start with missing dates, not missing dollars.
How does Form 1099-DA change things?
Brokers now report your sales straight to the IRS.
Gross proceeds reporting started with tax year 2025 (IRS, 2026). For 2026, covered assets bought on the same exchange after January 1 also carry reported basis.
Wrong or missing broker basis needs adjustment code B on Form 8949. The form lets you correct the number while keeping the reported proceeds.
Transfers between wallets stay outside broker reporting. Your own records fill that gap, no exceptions. Freelancers paid in coin should also read our free invoice generator guide for clean payment records.
How is staking and rewards income taxed?
Rewards land as ordinary income, not gains.
Staking payouts get taxed at fair market value on the day received. That value becomes your basis for later sales.
The same rule covers airdrops and referral bonuses. Each reward needs a date and dollar value recorded. Miss those records and every later sale becomes guesswork.
Why does per-wallet basis tracking matter now?
Rev. Proc. 2024-28 reset the tracking rules.
From 2025 forward, basis is tracked per wallet and per account under the safe harbor. Universal pooling across everything you own no longer works.
Practically, that means each wallet keeps its own purchase lots. Moving coins between your own wallets does not reset basis. Selling from the wrong wallet can change which lots you spend.
What can these calculators not do?
Honest limits keep you out of trouble.
A calculator cannot fetch your exchange history without account access. It cannot value odd DeFi swaps without prices you supply. It cannot choose your audit defense for you.
Complex situations still need a professional. Our pay stub guide covers a similar honesty line for payroll math. Wider money skills help too; the best finance courses for beginners roundup builds them. Big tax years deserve a real tax pro, not just a widget.
What are the next steps for filing crypto taxes?
Build the spreadsheet first, then compute.
Export every trade from every exchange you used. List dates, amounts, prices, and fees per row. Run the numbers through the calculator of your choice.
Check each 1099-DA against your own rows. Attach Form 8949 totals to Schedule D, then to your 1040. File early, because amended crypto returns draw questions nobody wants.
While you organize your finances, run your home loan numbers too. Our amortization calculator with extra payments shows mortgage savings instantly. One spreadsheet session can cover both taxes and the mortgage plan.
