iOS 27 major features

Apple Intelligence 2.0

Apple Intelligence 2.0 is the major AI upgrade in iOS 27. Key components:

• On-device AI: 3B parameter language model running on Apple Silicon for privacy-sensitive tasks (rewrite, summarize, image generation).
• Private Cloud Compute (PCC): server-side AI for complex queries with cryptographic privacy guarantees. PCC servers use Apple Silicon; data is not retained; independent audits verify privacy.
• GPT-5 integration: for the most complex queries, iOS routes to OpenAI's GPT-5 via PCC, with user consent and privacy disclosure.
• Writing Tools: system-wide rewrite, proofread, summarize, list, key points.
• Image Playground: AI-generated images in multiple styles (animation, illustration, sketch).
• Genmoji: custom emoji generated from text descriptions, on-device.
• Image Wand: convert rough sketches to polished images in Notes.
• Priority Notifications: AI prioritizes most important notifications to top of list.
• Smart Reply: context-aware email/message replies.
• Visual Intelligence: real-time visual search and translation via Camera Control.

Enhanced Siri

Siri's biggest upgrade since 2011:

• Natural conversation: LLM-powered natural language understanding; multi-turn context.
• Cross-app actions: Siri can perform multi-step actions across apps ('send the photo I took yesterday to my mom's iMessage').
• Personal context: Siri knows your contacts, calendar, messages, photos (with permission).
• Typing mode: Type to Siri instead of speaking.
• Voice assistant improvements: more natural voice, less robotic.
• Image and document understanding: Siri can analyze images, PDFs, documents.
• GPT-5 fallback: for complex queries, Siri hands off to GPT-5 with user permission.

Live Activities 3.0

Live Activities now more interactive and useful:

• Real-time sports scores with team-specific layouts.
• Live transit tracking with delay notifications.
• Delivery tracking with courier contact.
• Workout progress with real-time metrics.
• Order tracking for shopping apps.
• Flight status with gate changes.
• Interactive controls in Live Activities (start/stop timers, mark complete).

RCS Universal Profile 3.0

RCS brings iPhone-Android messaging to near-parity:

• Rich media: high-quality photos and videos (not MMS-compressed).
• Typing indicators: when other party is typing.
• Read receipts: cross-platform.
• Reactions: emoji reactions to messages.
• Larger group chats: up to 100 participants.
• End-to-end encryption: RCS Universal Profile 3.0 includes E2EE for cross-platform.
• Wi-Fi messaging: RCS works over Wi-Fi without carrier support.

Other iOS 27 features

• Customizable Lock Screen Widgets: more layout options, interactive widgets, third-party widget support.
• Safari 27: enhanced privacy, AI-powered tab organization, Reader mode improvements.
• Messages upgrades: AI-generated custom emoji (Genmoji), advanced search, message scheduling, message editing.
• Photos app redesign: improved organization, AI-powered collections, better search.
• Maps enhancements: detailed city experiences, hiking trails, custom routes.
• Health app updates: new health metrics, AI insights, medication tracking.
• Home app improvements: Matter device support, robot vacuum support, energy management.
• CarPlay 3: more apps, video support, customizable dashboards.
• Vision Pro integration: iPhone as Vision Pro controller, second screen, Mac Virtual Display.

Installation step-by-step

Pre-installation checklist

1. Backup your iPhone:
   • iCloud backup: Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now.
   • Computer backup (iTunes/Finder): Connect iPhone to computer, open iTunes/Finder, click 'Back Up Now'.
   • Encrypted backup recommended to save Health data, passwords, Wi-Fi settings.
2. Check storage: Settings > General > iPhone Storage. iOS 27 requires 7-8 GB free.
3. Charge battery: 50%+ or plugged in.
4. Connect to Wi-Fi: required for download (5-6 GB file).

Installation

1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
2. Wait for iOS 27 to appear (may take up to 24 hours after release).
3. Tap 'Download and Install'.
4. Enter your passcode.
5. Agree to terms and conditions.
6. Wait for download (~30-60 minutes depending on connection).
7. Tap 'Install Now' when prompted.
8. iPhone will restart and install (~20-45 minutes).
9. Set up Apple Intelligence 2.0 when prompted (compatible devices).
10. Re-enable any disabled features (e.g., Background App Refresh, Location Services).

Troubleshooting

• 'iOS 27 not appearing': device may be incompatible; check Apple support list.
• Download stuck: restart iPhone, check Wi-Fi, try different network.
• Not enough storage: remove apps, photos, or videos to free space.
• Verification failed: try again, restart, or use iTunes/Finder to install.
• Activation issues: ensure SIM is inserted, carrier settings updated.
• Battery drain after install: normal for 1-2 days as iOS reindexes; reverts to normal.

App compatibility

Most apps work immediately with iOS 27; some require updates from developers:

• Auto-updating apps: install on first launch or via App Store updates.
• Apps requiring iOS 27 APIs: updated apps that use new APIs (Apple Intelligence, Live Activities 3.0, RCS).
• Legacy apps (not updated): may have minor compatibility issues but generally work.
• Enterprise apps (managed devices): IT may need to test before deployment.
• Game apps: typically require updates for new Metal API features.

Check the App Store for available updates before installing iOS 27 if you depend on specific apps (Apple developer documentation, 2026).

Privacy and security in iOS 27

iOS 27 includes privacy and security enhancements:

• Private Cloud Compute (PCC): AI queries requiring cloud processing use Apple Silicon servers with cryptographic privacy guarantees; no data retention.
• App Privacy Manifest: required for all App Store apps declaring data collection.
• Mail Privacy Protection: enhanced to block more email tracking pixels.
• Safari Privacy: advanced fingerprinting protection; link tracking protection.
• Communication Safety: expanded to Messages, FaceTime, AirDrop, and Photos.
• Lockdown Mode: expanded protections for high-risk users.
• Stolen Device Protection: enhanced iPhone security when device is stolen.
• Passkey support: expanded to more apps and websites.

Apple's on-device AI and Private Cloud Compute are the most privacy-preserving AI architecture among major AI providers (Apple, 2026).

FAQ

Will iOS 27 slow down my iPhone?
iOS 27 is optimized for iPhone 15 Pro and later; performance on these devices is excellent. iPhone 14 series will see some performance reduction compared to iOS 26 but should remain acceptable. iPhone 13 and earlier are not supported. If you have an iPhone 14 and notice significant slowdowns, consider staying on iOS 26 (latest security patches) for now. Battery life may decrease 5-10% for the first 1-2 days after install as iOS reindexes, then reverts to normal (Apple Support, 2026).

Should I get iPhone 18 or iPhone 17 with iOS 27?
iPhone 18 (released September 18, 2026) has the A20 chip, better camera system, and exclusive features. iPhone 17 (released September 2025) has the A19 chip and runs iOS 27 with full features. For most users, iPhone 17 is sufficient and less expensive. iPhone 18 is for users who want the latest camera, processing power, and exclusive new features. Consider iPhone 18 if: you're a power user, want the best camera, or need the latest performance. iPhone 17 if: you want full iOS 27 features at lower cost, current iPhone 14 or earlier (Apple, 2026).
