What do the retake rules do to your real cost?
They turn a second failure into an expensive month. Microsoft lets you retake an exam 24 hours after the first failure, then applies a 14 day wait between each further attempt, up to five attempts in a 12 month window, and every attempt costs the exam fee. There is a waiver path for an internet or equipment failure, but it requires a Pearson VUE case number and Microsoft will not grant a waiver for anything else.
One warning from Microsoft worth acting on. Register with a personal Microsoft account rather than a work or school account, because Microsoft says exam records are lost and unrecoverable if you register with an organizational account and later leave that organization. That mistake can cost you the fee twice, once for the exam and again for the replacement certificate.
What does an endpoint administrator actually do?
You manage the fleet of devices a company uses and the rules that apply to them. That sounds like help desk work until you look at what the role covers today, because Microsoft has moved the role from administering mailboxes and licenses to administering endpoints at scale.
Concretely, the job covers six things. Preparing infrastructure for devices, which is deciding how a new laptop is set up before the employee receives it. Deploying and managing devices across platforms, which means using Microsoft Intune to push apps, settings, and policies to laptops, phones, and tablets whether they are company owned or not. Protecting devices, which is Microsoft Defender for Endpoint working with Intune and Microsoft Entra ID. Managing applications, so the right software is on the right device and licensed correctly. Optimizing endpoint operations, which is the automation and reporting work that keeps a thousand device fleet manageable. And working with architects and other administrators on how the whole workplace should be structured.
That is a technical operations role, and it is why the exam pulls in PowerShell, Microsoft Graph, Windows Autopilot, and Windows 365 rather than just clicking in the admin center. If that work sounds like your kind of problem, our guide to Microsoft Applied Skills certifications shows the lab based route into the same territory.
How do you study for the MD-102 without overspending?
Free material first. The study guide on the certification page, the practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator, and the exam sandbox that shows the real interface all cost nothing. The practice assessment tells you your readiness before you spend money, and most people who sit the real exam without taking it at least once are gambling.
Then buy only the gap. If your weakness is PowerShell or Graph scripting, buy a focused course on that rather than a full exam prep bundle. If your weakness is hands on time with Intune, no video will fix it, and a lab tenant or an internship will. Our guide to Azure certification cost compares the certification route against the free Microsoft Learn path for the same job family.
Is the MD-102 worth it for your career?
It is worth it if you already touch Intune or device management at work, because the exam matches the job and the renewal is free. It is less valuable as a first credential, since the role asks for experience with a tenant and its policies. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists computer support specialists and information security analysts as separate roles, and endpoint administration sits closer to the infrastructure side of both. Our guide to the best cloud certifications for career growth ranks the credentials that hiring managers actually ask for.
One more thing to plan for. Microsoft retired the older MD-101 credential, so if a job posting lists MD-101, that posting is out of date and the MD-102 is what they mean. Check the wording before you spend anything.
