New Zealand teachers earn NZD $56,000 to $90,000 per year under the STCA and APSTA pay scales effective in 2026 (Source: Ministry of Education, PPTA, NZEI Te Riu Roa). Beginning teachers start at NZD $56,000 to $63,000. Fully certified senior teachers reach NZD $78,000 to $90,000. Department heads, deputy principals, and principals reach NZD $100,000 to $180,000 depending on school size.
New Zealand teacher pay has historically lagged Australian and UK comparators, which has driven some migration of NZ teachers offshore. The government has invested in pay increases to address shortages and improve retention.

STCA and APSTA pay scales have been lifted substantially over the past three years to address teacher shortages and retention pressure. The 2025-2026 agreements delivered additional step increases and qualification-based allowances. The Ministry of Education's teacher supply strategy, including financial incentives for hard-to-staff subjects (mathematics, science, technology, te reo Māori) and rural areas, has provided targeted pay supplements. International education employment (Australia, Asia, Middle East) continues to be a financial attraction for NZ-trained teachers seeking higher pay, though retention packages within NZ have improved significantly.
Beginning teachers in New Zealand typically start at Step 1 with a three-year BEd qualification. Movement to Step 5 typically takes five to seven years of service, with steps gated by performance reviews. Lead teachers (Step 7 and beyond) typically supervise other teachers and lead curriculum or pastoral initiatives. Department heads in secondary schools coordinate subject departments with budgets, staffing, and curriculum oversight, paying NZD $95,000 to $120,000. Deputy principals and principals manage school operations including property, finance, and student welfare, with pay tied to school size. International school settings pay AUD $90,000 to $180,000+ but operate outside STCA/APSTA frameworks.
NZ teaching workforce structure includes primary teachers (covering Years 1 to 8), secondary teachers (Years 9 to 13), and area school teachers (covering both bands in smaller schools). Beginning teachers typically need a three-year BEd or a one-year GradDipTeaching following a Bachelor's degree. The Training for Teachers scheme has expanded teacher supply in recent years, including incentives for hard-to-staff subjects (mathematics, science, technology, te reo Māori). The TeachNZ scholarship scheme funds teacher-training for priority areas. Beginning teacher pay at Step 1 with a 3-year BEd qualification is roughly NZD $63,000 to $70,000, rising to NZD $90,000+ at Step 5 with additional qualifications. The Ministry of Education has invested heavily in teacher supply initiatives since 2022.
Secondary school teacher pay typically includes department allowances for heads of department and additional payments for teaching subjects in shortage areas. Hard-to-staff subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry, technology, te reo Māori) attract higher payments of NZD $3,000 to $10,000 per year under the STCA additional-payment provisions. Schools can also pay above-grade allowances for additional responsibilities (eg., sport coordination, careers advising). Study leave provisions of up to one year at full pay are available for senior teachers pursuing additional qualifications. Career progression to lead teacher and head of department typically takes 8 to 15 years of service, with pay rising through STCA Step 7 and beyond. International comparisons suggest NZ secondary teachers earn 75% to 85% of Australian secondary teacher equivalents.
