The number that changes your answer is the study route you pick, not the credential. The exam fee is the same for everyone, but the training bill runs from $0 on the free Microsoft Learn paths to $49 to $79 a month for the Microsoft program on Coursera. Both routes end at the same Microsoft credential and the same 100-minute test. By the end of this guide you will know which Microsoft credential you are really buying, what each skill area is worth, and how the program compares with Tableau and Looker.
Two things get mixed up online. The first is the Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate, a course program that teaches the skills. The second is the PL-300 exam, the proctored test that earns the Microsoft badge. One costs study money and takes weeks. The other takes 100 minutes and carries an exam fee. Our PL 300 exam cost guide covers that fee line by line, so this page stays on the program side.
Microsoft lists the credential as Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate. The certification page calls it an intermediate level credential for a data analyst role, and it was last updated on April 20, 2026.
What is the Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate?
It is a learning program, not a product Microsoft sells. Microsoft sells an exam. What most people call the certificate program is a course built around that exam, and it gives you lessons, projects, and sometimes a voucher. Only the exam produces a credential an employer can verify.
That gap matters when you read ads. A course page may promise a certificate that means a completion badge for one course. Microsoft Learn says the Microsoft Certified credential is earned by passing the exam, and it stays valid for 12 months.
So compare three things on any route you price out. Look at what the course teaches. Check whether it includes a discount voucher for the exam. Then see how much practice you get before test day. Our data analyst certification 2026 guide puts the major data credentials side by side so you can compare them the same way.
What skills does the PL-300 exam measure and how long is the test?
The Microsoft Learn study guide splits the exam into four skill areas with fixed weights. Preparing the data counts for 25 to 30 percent of the questions. Modeling the data counts for 25 to 30 percent. Visualizing and analyzing the data counts for 25 to 30 percent. Managing and securing Power BI counts for 15 to 20 percent. Three quarters of the test is hands-on building and reading data.
The exam gives you 100 minutes. Microsoft says it is proctored and may include interactive items, so expect some questions that ask you to build or repair something. The Microsoft Learn study guide says you need a score of 700 or higher to pass. There is no prerequisite, so the exam does not check which industry you worked in.
Microsoft also expects you to be proficient with Power Query, the tool that cleans and loads data, and DAX, the formula language that adds calculated columns and measures to a model. If either term is new, give yourself an extra week of practice. The business intelligence analyst salary guide shows the pay on the other side of this credential.
| Skill area | Share of the exam | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Prepare the data | 25 to 30 percent | Connect to sources, profile and clean data, transform and load it |
| Model the data | 25 to 30 percent | Relationships, calculated columns, DAX measures, model performance |
| Visualize and analyze the data | 25 to 30 percent | Report visuals, storytelling, patterns and trends |
| Manage and secure Power BI | 15 to 20 percent | Workspaces, sharing, row-level security, sensitivity labels |
How much does each study route cost?
The cheapest route is the one Microsoft gives away. Microsoft Learn publishes self-paced paths for every skill area, including the course Design and manage analytics solutions using Power BI, plus a free practice assessment, an exam sandbox, and the official study guide. If you already use Power BI at work, the learning cost can be $0 and the only bill left is the exam fee, which our PL 300 exam cost breakdown lays out.
The most popular paid route is Microsoft's own Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate on Coursera. Coursera lists the program as an eight-course series. The capstone course on deploying and maintaining Power BI assets is listed at 25 hours, and the final course on PL-300 exam preparation and practice is listed at 38 hours. Coursera also says learners who finish receive a 50 percent discount voucher for the PL-300 exam.
For price, the Coursera plan page lists Coursera Plus at $59 a month or $399 a year, and single learning programs at $49 to $79 a month. A five-month run through the Microsoft program therefore lands somewhere between $245 and $395 on the monthly plan. Live courses sit above that, and a university listing for a three-day PL-300 course shows full tuition at $1,739.
| Study route | Learning cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Learn self-paced | $0 | Learning paths, study guide, practice assessment, exam sandbox |
| Coursera Plus annual plan | $399 a year | All eight Microsoft courses plus a 50 percent exam voucher |
| Coursera single program | $49 to $79 a month | One program subscription with a 50 percent exam voucher |
| Live three-day course | $1,739 | Guided schedule, live sessions, practice environment |
| Exam sandbox and prep videos | $0 | A preview of the question types and the timing |
Two rows in that table can shrink the bill. The free Microsoft material covers the same four skill areas the exam weighs, so you only pay when you want a schedule and a voucher. The Coursera voucher cuts the exam fee in half, and on a short program that can pay for the subscription by itself. That is what the Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate costs once the exam fee is added.
Is Microsoft Learn enough or should you pay for a course?
Free Microsoft material is enough if you already build reports. It matches the four skill areas, and the practice assessment mirrors the real question types. If you have never opened Power BI Desktop, the gap is not knowledge. It is habits: cleaning a messy file, writing a measure that returns a number, and reading a model for errors.
Paid programs earn their price in three places. They give you a schedule. They hand you a practice environment with realistic files. And they return a discount voucher. The Coursera voucher alone can cover the subscription if you finish in four or five months.
Live instructor-led courses add one more thing, which is feedback. A coach can tell you why your model is slow and why your measure returns a blank. That correction is hard to get from a video, and it is why live training costs the most. It works best when your employer pays.

How does the Power BI certificate compare with Tableau and Looker?
The three tools overlap more than their marketing suggests. All three turn tables into dashboards, and all three now sit beside a major cloud platform. The real differences are the exam format, the price, and how long the badge lasts.
Tableau now runs its credentials inside Salesforce. The Salesforce Certified Tableau Data Analyst exam lists a $200 registration fee, 105 minutes, and 60 scored questions plus five unscored questions. Salesforce recommends about six months of hands-on Tableau experience, requires no prerequisite, and says the credential is valid for one year.
Looker takes a different path. Google Cloud covers Looker inside its Associate Data Practitioner exam, which lists a $125 registration fee, a two-hour limit, and 50 to 60 multiple choice questions. The exam guide includes building dashboards in Looker and editing simple LookML parameters, and the credential is valid for three years. Google Cloud publishes no list price for the Looker platform itself, so that price depends on a sales quote.
| Point of comparison | Microsoft PL-300 | Tableau Data Analyst | Google Cloud data path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam time | 100 minutes | 105 minutes | 120 minutes |
| Listed exam fee | See our cost guide | $200 | $125 |
| Question format | Proctored, may include interactive items | 60 scored and 5 unscored questions | 50 to 60 multiple choice |
| Validity | 12 months | One year | Three years |
| Free study material | Full learning paths | Prep module on Trailhead | Exam guide and learning path |
Choose based on the tool your employer already runs. The Power BI path is the cheapest to start and renews every year, which means a yearly study habit. The Tableau path costs more per attempt and carries a similar annual cycle under Salesforce. The Google Cloud path is cheapest per attempt and lasts longest, but it tests Looker and LookML rather than Power BI. Before you buy the Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate, check which tool your team already runs. Our Tableau vs Power BI vs Looker 2026 BI comparison goes deeper on the tooling and on licensing.
How long should the whole process take?
Budget six to eight weeks if you are new to Power BI. Two weeks is enough if you use it daily and only need to close gaps in modeling and DAX. The exam itself takes 100 minutes, and you can book a seat once the free practice assessment holds steady.
Renewal happens every 12 months, and Microsoft lets you renew at no cost by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. If you fail, Microsoft lets you retake 24 hours after the first attempt, and the wait grows after that. The retry rule and the fee are both covered in our PL 300 exam cost and retake guide.
So the Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate pays off when the tool matches the job. If your employer uses Power BI, take the free Microsoft Learn path, book the exam early, and pay for a program only when you need a schedule and a voucher. If your employer uses Tableau or Looker, weigh those credentials against the tools already running in your team.
