That matters because training is the easiest part to get wrong and the hardest to fix. If you are starting now, an authorized partner course removes the risk entirely. Our guide to free PMP training options is worth reading, but check each provider against the table above first.
Keep the receipt and the completion certificate from your course. They are the only proof that your 35 hours happened, and searching for them at application time costs more than filing them away on day one.
PMI does not endorse third-party training providers and warns against marketing that promises a guaranteed pass. Any course that names an exam outcome as a promise is a warning sign (PMI, Oct 2026).
What does the PMP exam look like after the July 2026 change?
The exam that launched on July 9, 2026 carries 180 questions in 240 minutes, and the domain weights moved hard toward business environment. The changes matter for study planning because the content you practice no longer matches the older exam.
What changed on July 9, 2026, per the PMI new-exam page and 2026 content outline
| Item | Before July 2026 | From July 2026 |
| People domain | 42 percent | 33 percent |
| Process domain | 50 percent | 41 percent |
| Business Environment domain | 8 percent | 26 percent |
| Question count | 180 questions | 180 questions, with 10 unscored pretest questions |
| Time limit | 230 minutes | 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks |
| New question types | Matching and multiple-response | Case or scenario and graphic-based questions added |
The approach mix also moved. Roughly 40 percent of the exam is predictive, and the remaining 60 percent splits between agile, adaptive, and hybrid approaches (2026 PMP Examination Content Outline, 2026).
Ten of the 180 questions are unscored pretest items, and nothing marks them as pretest on the screen. Your real target is answering 170 scored questions in 240 minutes, with two breaks that the timer does not count (2026 PMP Examination Content Outline, 2026).
The content outline is not written from the PMBOK Guide, and PMI says so directly. Practice with agile and hybrid scenarios, and read the exam outline rather than assuming a book covers it. Our post on the July 2026 exam and August fee change breaks down what moved.
How much does it cost to meet the PMP requirements?
The exam fee is $425 for PMI members and $675 for non-members, and you pay it only after your application is accepted. That timing matters, because the money leaves your account when PMI says you are ready to schedule (PMI, Oct 2026).
Cost of qualifying for the PMP, per the PMI certification page, Oct 2026
| Item | Amount | When you pay |
| Exam fee, PMI member | $425 (PMI, Oct 2026) | After your application is accepted |
| Exam fee, non-member | $675 (PMI, Oct 2026) | After your application is accepted |
| PMI membership dues | Check current tiers on pmi.org | Yearly, if you join to take the member fee |
| Training | Varies by provider and format | Before you apply |
| Renewal cycle | 60 PDUs every three years | Each three-year cycle |
Membership is worth checking before you book, because the member exam fee is $250 below the non-member fee. Dues change, so read the current tiers on pmi.org before you decide. Our breakdown of PMP certification cost covers the money side in more detail.
Membership and training are the two lines where people overspend. Dues only make sense if you plan to take more PMI exams or renew, and the training rule is easier to clear with an approved provider than with a cheap one (PMI, Oct 2026).
What happens if you fail the PMP exam?
You get three attempts inside a one-year eligibility period. After a third attempt, PMI asks you to wait one year from the date of your last exam before you can reapply for the certification, according to the 2026 PMP Examination Content Outline.
That waiting period applies to the PMP. You can still apply for a different PMI certification in the meantime, which keeps your project management credentials active while you prepare again.
PMI publishes no retake price on the certification page, so check the exam scheduling section at checkout for the fee that applies to your next attempt.
How do you renew the PMP certification?
Renewal takes 60 PDUs in each three-year cycle, logged in the PMI certification system, and one PDU equals one hour of qualifying learning. You log the hours in the Continuing Certification Requirements System, which PMI treats as the record of your compliance (PMI, Oct 2026).
A CAPM holder needs only 15 PDUs per three-year cycle, so the CAPM route costs less to maintain than the PMP route (PMI, Oct 2026).
PMI counts qualifying learning activities toward PDUs, and each PDU equals one hour of that learning. Log the hours as you go instead of in one session at the end of the cycle, because a three-year gap of forgotten hours turns into a deadline problem, according to PMI.
Plan the hours early rather than at the end of the cycle. Three years sounds long, and the people who miss deadlines are the ones who wait until the final months to look for sessions.
What can trigger an eligibility audit?
PMI can select you for an eligibility audit, and you will need three documents ready. The program aligns to ISO/IEC 17024:2012, and the certification page describes the audit as part of the enhanced verification inside the application system (PMI, Oct 2026).
- A copy of your degree, associate's degree, or trade school diploma.
- A verification of your experience signed by a supervisor or manager.
- Proof of the project management work you listed in the application.
Build that paperwork while you prepare, not after an email arrives. The PMP certification study guide covers the exam content itself, and this page covers the gate in front of it.
What are the next steps to meet the requirements for PMP certification?
Work down this checklist and the requirements for PMP certification stop being a puzzle.
- Match your education to the correct tier and count your qualifying project months.
- Take the 35 hours from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider, or an eligible higher-education program if you start after December 1, 2026.
- Write down each project you will describe in the application, with dates, and note who supervised you.
- Collect your degree copy and a supervisor-signed verification before you submit.
- Apply through the official PMI application page and wait for acceptance before you pay the exam fee.
- Study the July 2026 content outline, with extra time on business environment and scenario questions.
- Save a copy of every document you submit, because audits happen months after approval.
Everything here is a moving target, so treat this page as a starting point. Verify the current requirements and fees on pmi.org before you pay for training or sit the exam.
