Do the free practice assessment before you buy anything. If you are already scoring above the pass mark, you do not need a course. If you are far below, you need practice in a scratch org rather than more videos. Our guide to the full Salesforce admin cost breakdown covers the price list in more detail, including how employers often reimburse the exam.
What are the traps that waste money?
The first trap is buying a practice exam bank before taking the free official practice assessment. Most banks over price the questions and under price the format, so you end up studying the wrong material. The second trap is paying for a course that teaches the platform instead of the exam, which teaches configuration far beyond what the exam asks. The third is scheduling the exam before you have used a scratch org, since the hands on memory of where things live is worth more than any video.
One more trap worth naming. Rescheduling rules are strict on Salesforce exams, so a missed appointment can cost a fee on top of the $200. Pick a date when you are not traveling. Our guide to Salesforce versus HubSpot helps you confirm that this is the right platform to certify in before you pay for any of it.
What does the credential actually get you in pay?
It depends on the role more than the badge, but the direction is clear. Administrators who hold the certification move into senior admin and platform work faster than those without it, and the credential is a common requirement on consultancy postings. Our guide to Salesforce admin certification salary covers the equivalent question on the other platform, where the pay bands are similar in shape because the roles are similar.
One thing to check before you commit. Many job postings say Salesforce certified without naming the credential, because there are several admin tracks, including the classic platform administrator and the newer ones focused on flow, marketing, and analytics. Ask the recruiter which one they mean. Our guide to Salesforce versus HubSpot is useful context for the wider platform market you are choosing in.
Is the certification worth it, and what does it lead to?
It is one of the most widely recognised entry level credentials in the enterprise software market, and most administrators start at a salary well above the general administrative average. The credential also feeds directly into consulting and implementation work. Our guide to Salesforce admin certification salary breaks down what the credential is worth in pay, and the admin credential is a common first step for people moving from help desk work into platform work.
Check the retake promotion before you book. Salesforce currently lists a free retake offer for $200 and $400 exams running January 4 through April 7, 2027. If that window covers your exam date, failing once is free, which changes the whole calculation. Promotions change often, so read the Salesforce help article at the time you book rather than relying on a date from a guide.
If the promotion does not cover your exam date, plan for two paid attempts and budget $300 instead of $200. Most first time candidates who fail do so on one or two questions rather than on the whole exam, so the second attempt is usually a small review followed by a pass. At that point the cheapest fix is a few days with the free Trailhead modules on the sections you missed, not another paid course.
Budget for time as well as money. People who fail the first attempt were usually ready on content but not on scope, because the exam covers configuration, automation, and reporting across several objects that need practice rather than reading. A week of Trailhead with the free hands on org is usually worth more than an extra paid course.
