The flexibility and higher taxes of UK driving has attracted thousands of drivers to agency work since 2022. However, agency drivers face irregular income, no occupational sick pay, and reduced training opportunities. (Source: Logistics UK 2026 workforce survey.)
ADR / Hazmat / Tanker Specialist Pay Premiums
Specialist HGV drivers earn 15-30% above Class 1 baseline pay due to higher training requirements and hazardous conditions. (Source: HSE ADR 2026 regulations, Logistics UK 2026.)

| ADR (Hazardous Materials) | +15-25% | ADR certificate (5-day course + exam) |
| ADR Class 1 (Explosives) | +25-35% | ADR with Class 1 specialty |
| ADR Class 7 (Radioactive) | +30-40% | ADR with Class 7 specialty |
| Fuel Tanker (Petroleum) | +20-30% | ADR + tanker endorsement + safety training |

ADR Class 7 (radioactive materials) is the highest-paying HGV specialty, with a 30-40% premium above Class 1 baseline. ADR qualifications are issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and require a 5-day training course plus exam. The certification is valid for 5 years and must be renewed through refresher training. (Source: HSE ADR 2026 regulations, individual HGV training provider data.)
UK HGV Driver Shortage Impact on Pay
The UK has a chronic HGV driver shortage that has driven wages up 35-50% since 2020. (Source: RHA Road Haulage Association 2024 driver shortage report, Logistics UK 2025 workforce survey.)
| Year | Estimated Shortage (Drivers) | Average Class 1 Annual Pay | YoY Pay Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | ~60,000 | £30,000 | Baseline |
| 2021 | ~100,000 (peak post-Brexit/post-COVID) | £36,000 | +20% |
| 2022 | ~90,000 | £39,000 | +8% |
| 2023 | ~75,000 | £42,000 | +8% |
| 2024 | ~80,000 | £45,000 | +7% |
| 2025 | ~85,000 | £48,000 | +7% |
| 2026 | ~80,000 (estimate) | £51,000 | +6% |
The UK HGV driver shortage peaked at ~100,000 in 2021 due to Brexit (which restricted EU driver migration) and COVID-19 (which accelerated retirement of older drivers). Industry efforts to recruit UK drivers through training subsidies and improved pay have stabilized the shortage at ~80,000. Average Class 1 pay rose 70% from £30,000 in 2019 to £51,000 in 2026 - the fastest wage growth in any UK sector.
