AZ-900 in Detail — The Most Popular Starting Point
AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals is the entry-level certification covering cloud concepts, Azure architecture, core services (compute, network, storage, security), pricing, and SLAs. It's:
- Required for most Azure role-based certifications
- Often a "must-have" in job postings for cloud-adjacent roles
- Easiest Azure cert to pass — 2-3 weeks of study suffices for most
- Cheapest at $99 — the lowest-stakes entry into the Azure track
Studied topics include: cloud deployment models (public, private, hybrid), Azure regions and availability zones, Azure Active Directory, Azure Policy, cost management, and the shared responsibility model.
AZ-104 in Detail — The Workhorse Certification
AZ-104 Azure Administrator is the most-requested Azure certification by Indian employers. It validates skills to:
- Manage Azure identities and governance (Entra ID, subscriptions, RBAC, Policy)
- Implement and manage storage (blob, file, storage accounts, SAS)
- Deploy and manage Azure compute (VMs, App Service, containers, Functions)
- Configure and manage virtual networking (VNet, NSG, peering, VPN, ExpressRoute)
- Monitor and back up Azure resources (Azure Monitor, Backup, Site Recovery)
Expect a 60-80 question exam with case studies, lab-style questions, and at least one drag-and-drop scenario. Most people need 8-12 weeks of focused study plus hands-on labs.
AZ-400 in Detail — Azure DevOps Engineer Expert
AZ-400 validates skills to design and implement DevOps practices for Azure. Requires AZ-104 or AZ-204 as a prerequisite. Covers:
- CI/CD with Azure Pipelines (YAML multi-stage, gates, releases)
- Infrastructure-as-Code (ARM templates, Bicep, Terraform)
- Source control (Git, branching strategies, pull requests)
- Configuration management (Ansible, PowerShell DSC, Chef)
- Container build and deployment (Docker, AKS, Helm, ACR)
- Continuous feedback (Application Insights, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics)
Note: many exam questions overlap with the AZ-104/204 content because DevOps is fundamentally about deploying Azure workloads.
Renewal Policy (2026)
Microsoft Azure certifications are valid for one year and must be renewed before expiry. Renewal is free and consists of a shorter online assessment (~25 questions, 30 minutes) available on Microsoft Learn. Renewing also updates your transcript with the most recent date.
Tip: schedule the renewal exam 30 days before your cert expires. Microsoft sends email reminders, but it's easy to miss.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping AZ-900 — yes, it's easy, but it covers terminology used in every other Azure exam
- Studying only video — hands-on labs in the Azure portal are non-negotiable
- Ignoring case studies — they're worth 15-20% of the score
- Not practicing drag-and-drop — the interface is unfamiliar until you've used it
- Cramming the night before — exam retakes cost the same, and you'll forget half by morning
FAQ
Is Azure certification worth it in 2026?
Yes, especially for enterprise and hybrid-cloud roles. Azure is the second-largest cloud provider globally with 25%+ market share. AZ-104 and AZ-400 are the most-requested cloud certs in Indian job postings. Combined with hands-on experience and a portfolio, certifications can accelerate salary growth by 30-50%.
Which Azure certification should I get first?
Start with AZ-900 regardless of your target role. It establishes the vocabulary (subscriptions, resource groups, RBAC, regions, SLAs) used in every other Azure exam. Then branch into AZ-104 (admin), AZ-204 (developer), AI-102 (AI), or DP-203 (data) based on your career goal.
How long does it take to prepare for AZ-900?
2-3 weeks for someone with prior IT experience. 4-6 weeks for someone new to cloud. Microsoft's free AZ-900 learning path on Microsoft Learn is sufficient. Add a practice test (Tutorials Dojo or MeasureUp) for the last 3 days.
How much does the AZ-900 exam cost?
$99 USD (~₹8,200 + 18% GST) globally. In India, Pearson VUE and Prometric are the testing partners. Microsoft offers a free second attempt if you fail on the first try (a relatively new policy as of 2024).
Can I get Azure certified without a job?
Yes. AZ-900 requires no work experience. AZ-104 and AZ-204 also have no prerequisites other than AZ-900 (for some paths) and hands-on familiarity. Many freshers pass AZ-900 in their final year of college and use it to land their first cloud role.
What is the best Azure training institute in Chennai?
Look for institutes with hands-on labs, real Azure sandboxes, and instructors who are Microsoft-certified themselves. Tutorsbot offers Azure Cloud training in Chennai covering AZ-900 + AZ-104 with placement support, plus Azure DevOps training for AZ-400.
