Licence requirements differ by state. Most states require an A-grade electrician's licence to work unsupervised. Specialised work (eg., high-voltage, hazardous areas) requires additional endorsements. The Trades Recognition Australia pathway evaluates overseas qualifications for skilled migration.

Salary figures draw on the Electrical Award MA000025 as updated by the Fair Work Commission Annual Wage Review for 2025-2026, with state and territory variations. Total compensation estimates include overtime, site allowances, and tool allowances typical for the sector. Currency is AUD throughout.
Verify current postings on employer career sites and the Fair Work Commission website. Award rates update annually following the Annual Wage Review.
The electrical trade in Australia is structured around the Electrical Award (MA000025) plus state-specific enterprise agreements (EBAs) for major employers. ETU-aligned enterprise agreements typically pay 10% to 25% above Award minimums and add comprehensive superannuation, leave, and travel entitlements. State differences reflect local construction and infrastructure demand: WA's mining and resources activity drives the strongest site premiums, NSW's commercial and infrastructure boom drives Sydney premium rates, and Queensland's residential construction growth drives continued demand. The Fair Work Commission Annual Wage Review 2025-2026 delivered a 3.5% increase to modern award minimums, with the next review due August 2026 for select industries including electrical. Apprentice graduation rates remain below replacement demand, supporting continued wage growth through 2027. Solar PV, EV charging, and battery storage installations have created new specialty premiums of 10% to 25% above base rates as the energy transition accelerates. Electricians adding these certifications position themselves for the strongest wage growth in the trade.
Major Australian electrical contractors negotiate enterprise agreements that pay 10% to 30% above the Award. NECA-aligned EBAs for commercial and industrial electricians typically include site allowances, travel allowances, redundancy provisions, and overtime penalty rates of 150% to 200%. ETU-aligned EBAs for utility and infrastructure electricians typically include additional leave, defined-benefit superannuation components above the standard Award rate, and disciplined apprentice-to-journeyman progression. Top-tier commercial and industrial electricians in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth metro areas commonly reach AUD $130,000 to $160,000 in total compensation by year six to eight of their careers. Those who add solar PV, EV-charging, and battery storage specialties often reach $170,000+ as the energy transition accelerates.
Australia's electrical trade is critical to the energy transition. Federal and state programs are driving wave-deployments of household solar PV, battery storage, and EV charging infrastructure, all of which require licensed electricians for installation. Solar PV installers with Clean Energy Council accreditation earn 10% to 20% premiums above Award rates. Battery storage installations on residential properties require DC-coupled and AC-coupled system knowledge. EV DC fast-charger installations run at commercial electrical rates with site allowances. Industrial electricians on battery storage and renewable energy projects earn shift differentials of AUD $5 to $15 per hour. The Smart Energy Council maintains lists of accredited installers and certifications for the renewable energy trades. Demand for these specialty roles has accelerated since the expansion of the Clean Energy Regulator's battery rebate program and the EV charging infrastructure rollout targets through 2027.
Exam and licensing pathways matter for career progression. The Cert III in Electrotechnology (Electrician) is the entry qualification (UEE30820) and takes roughly four years of combined on-the-job and off-the-job training. The Capstone assessment requires the UEE30820 qualification. State-specific licensing varies: NSW (Fair Trading), Victoria (Energy Safe Victoria), Queensland (CBOS), WA (Electrical Licensing Board), SA and Tasmania (Office of Consumer and Business Affairs), ACT and NT equivalent bodies. Most electricians add additional endorsements for high-voltage work, solar PV, hazardous areas, and structured cabling, each of which commands premium rates.
