Paid programs and certifications compared
Two subscription programs and one exam route cover almost every budget, and the live cohort options cost several times more.
Paid data analyst programs, checked 31 October 2026| Program | Provider | Price | Length | Certificate | Exam fee |
|---|
| Data Analytics Professional Certificate | Google on Coursera | $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day trial, usually under $300 | 9 courses, 6 months at 10 hours a week | Included in the subscription | None |
| Data Analyst Professional Certificate | IBM on Coursera | Subscription | 11 courses, 4 months at 10 hours a week | Included | None |
| PL-300 route | Microsoft | Free study path plus the exam | Self-paced | The Microsoft certification | $165 |
| Data Analytics Essentials with PL-300 add-on | UT Austin McCombs with Great Learning | About $2,900 to $3,100, verify on the provider page | 22 weeks plus a 10-week add-on | Completion certificate plus optional PL-300 | Included in the add-on |
| AI Powered Data Analyst | Simplilearn with Microsoft | Price on request | 6 months, live cohort | Master certificate plus Microsoft Learn certificates | Not included |
| DataCamp Premium | DataCamp | $336 a year list price, about $28 a month equivalent | 800+ courses | Per-course certificates plus exam-style credentials | Included in Premium |
Two providers publish conflicting prices for the same university program, so treat that row as a range and confirm before you pay. Vendors that quote price on request route you through a sales advisor, which is worth avoiding when a subscription gets you the same certificate content.
DataCamp is the middle option most people skip. The list price works out near $28 a month, the first chapter of every course is free, and each course ends with a certificate you can point a hiring manager to.
The tool stack that actually gets you hired
Every target role wants the same first two tools, and the third one depends on the job title.
Minimum tool stack by target role| Target role | Must-have tools | Where to learn them |
|---|
| Junior analyst | Excel and SQL | Excel and SQL courses, then a free Kaggle dataset project |
| Reporting and BI analyst | SQL and Power BI | Microsoft Learn PL-300 path plus the Power BI course |
| Data and ML analyst | Python and SQL | Python data science course with the Kaggle Python track |
| Generalist analyst | Spreadsheets, SQL and one BI tool | Google Data Analytics certificate |
Do not add a second reporting tool before you ship a project. Knowing one tool well beats knowing two superficially, and the hiring interview will ask you to build something live in it.
Certificate or portfolio, and how to start
The best data analyst courses are not a substitute for proof of work. Get the certificate if a hiring filter needs one, and build the portfolio either way, because the portfolio is what proves the certificate was worth it.
- Week 1: freeCodeCamp Relational Databases or the Kaggle Python track, both free.
- Week 2: SQL practice on a real dataset, then one dashboard in Power BI or Tableau.
- Week 3: write a 400-word case study on what the data showed.
- Week 4: publish all three, then decide whether the paid program is still needed.
Our data analytics course and SQL course cover the two skills that every route above assumes you have.
What are the next steps to choose a course
Decide what role you are aiming at, then pick the tool stack from the table above. If it is reporting, take the free Microsoft Learn path and book the $165 PL-300 exam once the practice assessment score feels comfortable.
If it is a generalist analyst role, the Google certificate is the smoothest route to a name a hiring manager recognizes, and most learners finish it for under $300.
If you are still unsure, spend a free week on Kaggle Learn and publish one project. That single artifact will tell you which direction you want, and it costs nothing.
