The ECBA has no such gate. No prior experience, no application or approval step, and no training hours to log, according to IIBA. It is the credential to start with when the hours are not there yet.
CCBA sits between them, asking for at least 900 hours in each of two knowledge areas, or at least 500 hours in each of four, per the IIBA customer support guidance from October 2026.
The two references are worth preparing carefully. Pick people who supervised your analysis work and can describe it directly, and give them a short summary of what you did before they are contacted.
The CBAP exam changed recently, so older study plans and vendor pages are describing the wrong test. The current CBAP exam has 120 questions in 210 minutes, and you can take it online or at a test centre (IIBA, Oct 2026).
Earlier versions of the CBAP used 4,500 hours and 175 minutes, and those figures still appear on training vendor pages. IIBA now asks for 7,500 hours, which is a change worth checking against your own application before you book.
The IIBA credentials are broader than the exam itself. Seven are live: ECBA, CCBA, and CBAP, plus four specializations in agile analysis, business data analytics, core competencies, and product ownership (IIBA, Oct 2026).
Specialization exams carry their own fees but the same rewrite terms, so a cheaper core exam plus one specialization often costs less than the Complete package that bundles them together.
How does the PMI-PBA compare with the IIBA options?
The PMI-PBA is the main alternative, and it is cheaper to enter with a PMI membership already in hand. The exam fee is $405 for PMI members and $555 for non-members, charged after your application is accepted (PMI, Oct 2026).
The main business analyst credentials compared, Oct 2026
| Credential | Cost | Eligibility | Exam format | Best for |
| IIBA ECBA | $395, promo $316 | No experience needed | Entry level | Starting out in the role |
| IIBA CCBA | $405, promo $324, plus $145 application | 900 hours in 2 areas or 500 in 4 | Intermediate | Early-career analysts |
| IIBA CBAP | $505, promo $404, plus $145 application | 7,500 hours in 10 years | 120 questions, 210 minutes | Senior and lead analysts |
| PMI-PBA | $405 member, $555 non-member | Three eligibility sets | 200 questions, 240 minutes | Project managers moving into analysis |
| Google Data Analytics on Coursera | Check current US pricing | None | 8 courses, about 6 months | A skills signal, not a credential |
PMI runs three eligibility sets for the PMI-PBA, and each one asks for the same 35 contact hours of business analysis practice on top of the experience.
Set A asks for a secondary degree, which includes a high school diploma or its global equivalent, plus 60 months of work as a business analyst practitioner in the last 8 years.
Set B asks for a bachelor's degree or higher, plus 36 months of that work in the last 8 years. Set C asks for a GAC-accredited bachelor's or postgraduate degree, plus at least 24 months of unique, non-overlapping professional experience.
Two details differ from the IIBA exams. The PMI-PBA has five performance domains, and Analysis is the largest at 35% of the exam. PMI also does not publish a fixed passing score for it.
Like the IIBA route, an eligibility audit is possible on the PMI-PBA application. You will need your degree, supervisor-signed verification of experience, and proof of the work you listed.
Is there an IEEE business analyst certification?
No, and any page telling you to buy one is out of date. The IEEE Computer Society does not offer a business analysis certification. It runs the Certified Software Professional program, and its Analysis and Design and Project and Program Management credentials are being phased out.
Existing IEEE certifications stay valid and recognized. Level 1 certification remains valid in perpetuity, and Level 2 is valid for three years with recertification available (computer.org, Oct 2026).
The same warning applies to pass rates. IIBA and PMI do not publish official pass rates, and the numbers on training vendor pages are vendor-reported.
Ask any vendor for their pass rate in writing, with the date and the test window it covers. A vendor who cannot produce that is selling a promise rather than a result.
What do certified business analysts actually earn?
IIBA's 2026 survey of 2,120 professionals across 122 countries puts the average business analyst compensation at $93,186, up from $88,234 in 2025. That is the number to anchor your own expectations on, from the IIBA 2026 Global State of Business Analysis report (IIBA, Oct 2026).
What the credential is worth, per the IIBA 2026 Global State of Business Analysis report
| Statistic | Value |
| Average business analyst compensation | $93,186 in 2026, up from $88,234 in 2025 |
| CBAP holder pay premium | 19 percent more than non-certified peers |
| Organizations that formally recognize the role | 81 percent of BA professionals |
| Certified BA professionals who would recommend certification | 94 percent |
| Certified professionals who saw benefits within the first year | 76 percent |
Recognition is holding steady. The share of BA professionals who say the role is formally recognized inside their organization has stayed at 81% for three consecutive years (IIBA, Oct 2026).
AI is not replacing the role, at least by the numbers. 69% of BA professionals say AI is having a positive impact on their careers, and only 5% report a negative impact (IIBA, Oct 2026).
For the demand side of the picture, our post on business analyst jobs covers where the roles sit, and AI and the business analyst role covers the skills shift behind those numbers.
What are the next steps to choose a business analyst certification?
Match the credential to the hours you can document, and let the price follow.
- Start with the ECBA if you have no business analysis hours yet, because it needs no application and no experience.
- Move to the CCBA once you can document 900 hours in two knowledge areas, or 500 hours in four.
- Line up the CBAP only when you can show 7,500 hours with 900 hours in each of four areas.
- Buy the exam before the 20 percent IIBA promotion ends on December 31, 2026, and check that your membership is included.
- Pick the PMI-PBA instead if your experience reads more like project management than analysis.
- Save the IIBA certification handbook, because it is the governing document for the hour rules.
Requirements and fees change, and IIBA has already changed both the hour requirement and the exam format. Verify the current requirements and prices on iiba.org or pmi.org before you apply.
