The detail that changes the answer is the industry behind the posting, not the job title. The same business analyst jobs pay very different amounts. A consultant at a financial services firm and a state government analyst do very different work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the lowest 10 percent of management analysts under $60,640 a year in May 2025. The highest 10 percent earned above $171,640 in that same survey.
By the end of this guide you will know which industries hire the most. You will see what tools show up in job ads. You will learn how to read a posting before you apply. We also sort out how business analyst jobs differ from data analyst jobs, because the two titles get mixed up constantly. Every number here comes from US federal data that covers 2025 into 2035.
How many business analyst jobs open each year in the US?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts management analysts, which is the closest official match for the title. The agency reports 1,077,100 management analyst jobs in 2025 and projects 1,186,300 by 2035. That is a gain of 109,200 jobs, or 10 percent, against 3 percent for all occupations. The same page reports about 94,100 openings each year across the decade.
Many of those openings exist because workers retire, change occupations, or leave the labor force. That is normal in this field and worth knowing before you read a slow hiring week as a bad sign. The wider business and financial group is larger still, with about 886,600 openings a year and a median wage of $82,660.
| Measure | BLS figure |
|---|---|
| Management analyst jobs in 2025 | 1,077,100 |
| Projected jobs in 2035 | 1,186,300 |
| Job growth from 2025 to 2035 | 10 percent |
| Growth for all occupations | 3 percent |
| Average openings each year | 94,100 |
| Median annual pay, May 2025 | $101,860 |
| Median hourly pay, May 2025 | $48.97 |
One more figure matters if you are comparing tracks. Management analysts had a median annual wage of $101,860 in May 2025, while the broader business operations specialist group earned $82,060. The gap reflects how much of the work sits close to a leadership team.
Which industries hire the most business analysts?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists where management analysts actually work. Consulting comes first by a wide margin, with 33 percent of the jobs. Government follows at 18 percent, then self-employed workers at 14 percent. Finance and insurance accounts for 13 percent, and management of companies adds 5 percent.
| Industry | Share of jobs | Median pay, May 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Professional, scientific, and technical services | 33 percent | $107,330 |
| Government, excluding state and local education and hospitals | 18 percent | $97,300 |
| Self-employed workers | 14 percent | Not reported |
| Finance and insurance | 13 percent | $100,300 |
| Management of companies and enterprises | 5 percent | $101,030 |
This mix explains a lot of job titles you will see on the market. A management analyst at a consulting firm may work on contract and travel often. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says analysts in this group divide their time between the office and the client site. Some work more than 40 hours a week, and many sit under tight deadlines.
Industries also set the subject matter you will learn. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that analysts often specialize by function, such as inventory control, or by sector, such as healthcare or telecommunications. In government, the specialty is usually the type of agency. A background in one sector can matter more than a second certification.
What tools do employers ask for in job ads?
Most postings mix three kinds of skills. You need to query data, show results, and document work. Spreadsheets sit at the center of most analyst roles. Excel with pivot tables and lookups is almost always named, because reporting still runs through it. SQL appears often enough to treat as a baseline skill for any analyst who touches data.
| Skill on the posting | Why it appears | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Excel and spreadsheet modeling | Weekly reporting and forecasting | Pivot tables, lookups, one clean model |
| SQL | Pulling data from a warehouse | Joins, grouping, window functions |
| Power BI or Tableau | Dashboards for stakeholders | One published dashboard with a story |
| Jira and Confluence | Requirements and backlog work | One user story with acceptance criteria |
| Agile or Scrum | How the delivery team ships | Explain one sprint you were part of |
| ERP or CRM systems | Client, order, and process data | Name the system and the task you did |
Read the depth, not just the name. A posting that says SQL usually wants someone who can write joins against a warehouse. A posting that lists SQL and Python together wants a hybrid analyst who can also script. More tools on the list does not always mean more skill. It often means a wider team and a stretched budget.
Watch the verbs too. Gather, analyze, recommend, facilitate, and document point to business analysis work. Build, model, deploy, and optimize point toward data science. When a posting mixes both sets, read the responsibilities section twice before you answer.
How do you get a business analyst job with little experience?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry level education for management analysts. It also lists less than five years of related work experience and no on-the-job training. That last point matters, because it means employers expect you to arrive ready to contribute.
An honest path starts with adjacent roles. Many people enter business analysis from project coordination, customer support, finance, or operations work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that organizations usually prefer candidates who already know the field they are hiring into. Tax firms may want former accountants, and software companies may want people who have worked as computer systems analysts.
Certification is optional, not a gate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says management analysts are not required to get certification, but a credential can give jobseekers an edge. If you want a side-by-side look, our guide to business analyst certifications covers the main options and what each one is worth on a resume.
Skills pages built for other markets list the same core tools. Our business analyst skills guide for India covers Excel, SQL, and stakeholder handling in detail, and that shared part applies directly to US postings. Every posting for business analyst jobs lists a reporting line somewhere, so read that first.
How do you read a business analyst job posting before you apply?
Spend ten minutes on the posting before you send anything. First, find out who the analyst reports to. A role under a finance leader usually means cost and reporting work. A role under a product leader usually means growth and adoption work. Second, look for the domain word. Banking, claims, clinical, or supply chain tells you which cases they will use in interviews.
Third, count the deliverables. A posting with a requirements document, user stories, and user acceptance testing describes an analyst who documents work for a delivery team. A posting with a forecast model, a variance report, and a dashboard describes an analyst who runs a business process. Both are real work, but you should apply for the one you want.
Fourth, check the length of the contract. Consulting roles are often fixed term and involve travel. In-house roles are permanent and involve many internal stakeholders. A posted range of $65,000 to $99,000 usually signals a mid-level individual contributor role, while a range above $110,000 points at senior or lead scope.
How do business analyst roles differ from data analyst roles?
The short version is where the work sits. A business analyst starts with a business problem and works out what should change. A data analyst starts with data and works out what it says. Business analysis lives in meetings, workshops, and requirements documents. Data analysis lives in queries, models, and charts. Both roles end with a recommendation to a decision maker.
Our guide on business analyst versus data analyst breaks down the daily tasks, reporting lines, and tools side by side. If you want the pay picture, our data analyst salary guide covers 2026 figures by state and industry. Hiring for data analyst jobs is described in a separate guide with its own tool list.
Hybrid roles are common in tech and in finance. A product analyst sits on a product team and pulls data to answer a roadmap question. A revenue operations analyst joins a sales team and rebuilds a forecast. Those roles pay well because they need two skill sets and few people carry both.
