Top metros for cybersecurity specialists
The metro breakdown captures where the work actually sits. Ottawa leads because federal government departments, the Communications Security Establishment, and defence contractors concentrate the country's cybersecurity buyer base. Toronto follows with banking and financial-services demand. Vancouver is strong in tech and SaaS. Calgary has critical-infrastructure demand. Montreal has financial services and government buyers.

How Canadian cybersecurity salaries have evolved
Cybersecurity specialist wages in Canada rose roughly 18% to 24% from 2021 to 2025 based on successive Job Bank releases. The largest year-over-year increases came between 2022 and 2024 as provincial private-sector breach laws came into force. Banks, energy operators, telcos, and federal-provincial departments competed for a small supply of senior incident-response talent, especially post-pandemic in remote-work-friendly roles.
The certification premium in Canada
CompTIA Security+ clears the entry bar for many employers at $44 to $50 per hour roles. (ISC)2 CISSP remains the dominant mid-career gate, typically associated with $50 to $70 per hour roles. AWS Security Specialty, Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer, and CCSP boost cloud specialist pay by roughly 10% to 15%. Certifications like OSCP carry a premium for offensive roles, especially for incident response and penetration testing.
Senior practitioner bands (production-ready data)
Senior practitioners in incident response, security architecture, and cloud security with seven-plus years of experience in Toronto and Vancouver earn between $140,000 and $190,000 in base salary, with another 10% to 20% in stock and bonus. Staff and principal professionals at Toronto-based banks, Calgary-based energy firms, and Ottawa-based federal employers reach total compensation of $200,000 to $260,000 per year. These bands reflect demand-supply pressure that has held steady since 2022 and is unlikely to ease before 2027 given the pace of AI-driven attack-surface expansion.

Methodology
Hourly wage figures are the median and 25th-to-75th percentile range for Cybersecurity Specialist (NOC 21211) from the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey (2023-2024) and Small Area Estimation model, published November 19, 2025 via the Job Bank. Annual figures assume 1,950 to 2,080 full-time work hours. Provincial figures use SAE model where direct LFS sample size is too small to publish.
Compensation data reflects full-time wage-and-salary employment. Total compensation typically includes health benefits, defined-contribution or defined-benefit pension, and stock options at larger employers. Verify current postings on employer career sites.
