Pros & Cons of Joining Cognizant as a Fresher

Pros

• Higher base salary than TCS (₹3.36 LPA), Infosys SE (₹3.6 LPA — close), Wipro (₹3.5 LPA). GenC at ₹4 LPA is the highest standard track among mass-hiring IT services.
• Three-tier structure (GenC, Next, Pro) gives clear growth visibility and recognition within 12-18 months.
• Strong presence in healthcare and BFSI verticals — exposure to regulated industries that are harder to break into later.
• Solid training programme at Chennai and Coimbatore campuses.
• Lower bench period (typically 1-3 months) compared to TCS (2-6 months).
• Flexible working options — most projects allow 2-3 days WFH post-training.

Cons

• Variable pay is paid quarterly, not monthly — affects take-home for first 6-8 months.
• Strict 60% throughout eligibility criteria is non-negotiable for GenC — even high performers get rejected if they have 59.9% in any semester.
• Promotion cycles can be slow in some accounts — senior management roles are highly competitive.
• Higher attrition compared to TCS — many Cognizant freshers switch in Year 2-3 for product companies.
• Project allocation is sometimes randomized — you may get a non-preferred technology stack.

Cognizant GenC vs GenC Next vs GenC Pro — Final Recommendation

If you have 70%+ academics and solid DSA skills, aim for GenC Pro (₹7 LPA) — the package jump from standard GenC to Pro is the highest among IT services companies (75% premium). If you clear the coding round but have 65% academics, GenC Next (₹5.5 LPA) is the realistic sweet spot. Standard GenC (₹4 LPA) is best for freshers who value training quality and work-life balance over peak salary.
