How deep does a residential water well need to be?

A residential water well in the US is typically 100 to 400 feet deep, depending on the water table depth in the local geology. In areas with a shallow water table like Florida, the Gulf Coast, and the Mississippi Delta, residential wells can be as shallow as 50 to 100 feet. In areas with a deep water table like the western US Mountain States, residential wells can be 300 to 600 feet deep. The well driller determines the target depth during the site visit by reviewing local well logs and doing a test bore. The right depth is the one that reaches a reliable aquifer with enough yield to meet the home's daily water demand, which is typically 400 to 600 gallons per day for a family of four.

How long does it take to drill a water well?

Drilling a residential water well takes 1 to 3 days of active drilling, depending on the depth and the rock type. Soft soil and sand wells drill fast, often in a single day. Hard rock wells with granite or basalt drill slower and can take 2 to 3 days. After drilling, the well driller installs the casing, the pump, the pressure tank, and the electrical wiring in another half-day to full day. The total project from the first site visit to the first flowing water takes 1 to 2 weeks, including permit processing, drilling, pump installation, water testing, and final inspection.

Do I need a permit to drill a water well?

Yes. Most US states require a permit before drilling a water well, and the rules vary by state and county. The permit process typically takes 1 to 4 weeks and costs 50 to 500 dollars depending on the jurisdiction. The well driller usually handles the permit application as part of the overall project. Some states also require a separate well inspection after drilling is complete, which confirms the well meets minimum construction standards. The right time to start the permit process is at least 4 weeks before the planned drilling date, especially in states with longer permit timelines like California, Texas, and Florida.

How long does a water well last?

A properly constructed residential water well lasts 30 to 50 years or more, with regular maintenance. The steel casing lasts 30 to 50 years, the submersible pump lasts 10 to 15 years, the pressure tank lasts 10 to 15 years, and the well screen lasts 20 to 30 years. The well water yield can decrease over time if the aquifer drops, if mineral buildup clogs the screen, or if the pump wears out. Annual maintenance includes testing the water quality, checking the pump pressure, and inspecting the well cap. The well should be inspected by a licensed well contractor every 5 to 10 years for signs of casing corrosion, screen blockage, or yield loss. Most well issues are fixable for 500 to 2,000 dollars, which is much cheaper than drilling a new well.

Can I drill a water well myself?

Drilling a water well yourself is possible in some states but not recommended. The drilling itself requires a specialized rig, knowledge of local geology, and the ability to handle the casing, grout, and pump installation safely. Most states require a licensed well driller for any well that serves a residence, and DIY drilling can void the home insurance if a claim arises from a well-related issue. The right approach for a homeowner is to hire a licensed and insured well driller, check the driller's references and complaint history with the state, and get at least three quotes before signing. The cost difference between the cheapest and most expensive driller in a local market can be 30 to 50 percent for the same well.

How Much Does It Cost to Drill a Water Well in 2026?

What determines the cost of drilling a water well

Drilling a residential water well in 2026 runs 25 to 65 dollars per foot, with a total project cost of 5,000 to 15,000 dollars for a typical well that is 150 to 400 feet deep. The five factors that drive the cost are drilling depth, rock type, casing material, pump system, and local permit and water-testing fees. Deeper wells cost more per foot because the driller spends more time on site and uses more casing. Hard rock wells cost more than soft soil wells because the drill bit wears out faster and the rig runs slower. Casing material runs from 8 to 30 dollars per foot depending on whether it is PVC, galvanized steel, or stainless steel. The pump system, including the submersible pump, the pressure tank, and the electrical wiring, runs 1,500 to 4,000 dollars installed.

How the drilling process works

The drilling process has six steps. First, the well driller does a site visit to check the local geology, review nearby well logs, and mark the drilling location. Second, the drilling rig is brought to the site and sets up over the marked spot. Third, drilling begins, with the bit cutting through soil and rock as the casing follows behind. Fourth, when the well reaches the target aquifer and the water yield is confirmed, the driller installs the permanent casing and the well screen, then grouts the annular space between the casing and the borehole wall to prevent surface contamination. Fifth, the driller develops the well by pumping water at high rates to clear drilling debris from the screen and the aquifer. Sixth, the pump, pressure tank, and electrical wiring are installed, and the well is tested for yield and water quality.

Pump system options

Three pump system options are common for residential wells in 2026. The first is a submersible pump, which sits at the bottom of the well inside the casing and pushes water up to the pressure tank. Submersible pumps are the most common choice for wells deeper than 50 feet, and they cost 1,500 to 3,000 dollars installed. The second is a jet pump, which sits at the surface next to the pressure tank and pulls water up from the well. Jet pumps work for shallow wells under 50 feet and cost 500 to 1,500 dollars installed. The third is a hand pump or solar pump for off-grid homes, which cost 300 to 1,500 dollars installed and avoid the need for electrical wiring to the well.

The right pump for a typical residential well is a submersible pump with a 4-inch diameter, 0.5 to 1.5 horsepower motor, and stainless steel construction. A 1 horsepower submersible pump serves a family of four at 10 to 15 gallons per minute, which is more than enough for normal household use. A pressure tank of 40 to 80 gallons sits in the basement or utility room and stores pressurized water so the pump does not have to run every time a faucet is opened. The pressure tank costs 300 to 800 dollars installed. The electrical wiring from the house panel to the well pump costs 500 to 1,500 dollars, with the higher end for wells far from the house.

Permits and water testing

Most US states require a permit before drilling a water well, and the rules vary by state and county. The permit typically costs 50 to 500 dollars and takes 1 to 4 weeks to process. The well driller usually handles the permit application as part of the overall project. After drilling is complete, most states require a well inspection to confirm the well meets minimum construction standards, including proper casing, grouting, and setback distances from septic systems, property lines, and contamination sources. The inspection cost is included in the well driller's fee in most cases.

Water quality testing is separate from the well inspection. The right tests for a new residential well are bacteria (total coliform and E. coli), nitrates, arsenic, lead, and any local contaminants like radon in the Northeast or iron and sulfur in the Southeast. The basic bacteria and nitrate test runs 50 to 150 dollars. The full panel with metals and minerals runs 150 to 400 dollars. The right time to test is 2 to 4 weeks after the well is developed, so the water has had time to clear any drilling contamination. If the test results show unsafe levels, the fix is usually a point-of-use filter for 200 to 1,000 dollars, a chlorination system for 500 to 1,500 dollars, or a reverse osmosis system for 1,000 to 3,000 dollars.

How to find a good well driller

The right way to find a well driller is to ask for at least three local quotes, check each driller's license and insurance with the state, and ask for references from wells drilled in the last 2 to 5 years in the same ZIP code. A good driller will show up for the site visit, review the local well logs, give a detailed written quote that breaks out drilling, casing, pump, and electrical, and explain the likely depth and water yield based on the local geology. A bad driller gives a flat per-foot quote without a site visit, cannot show local references, and pushes for the cheapest option without explaining the trade-offs.

The right time to start shopping is 2 to 3 months before you need the well flowing. The permit process alone takes 1 to 4 weeks, and the best drillers are often booked 4 to 8 weeks out. The right way to compare quotes is to ask each driller for the same five numbers: total cost, total depth, casing material and diameter, pump system, and warranty on the well and pump. The cheapest total cost is not always the best deal, because a driller who quotes a 200 foot well when the local geology suggests 350 feet will end up with a dry or low-yield well that costs more to fix or drill deeper.

Bottom line

Drilling a residential water well in 2026 runs 5,000 to 15,000 dollars for a typical well, with a national average around 9,500 dollars including the pump and pressure tank. The cost per foot runs 25 to 65 dollars, with deeper hard rock wells costing more. The process from the first site visit to flowing water takes 1 to 2 weeks, and the well itself lasts 30 to 50 years with regular maintenance. The right way to shop is to get at least three local quotes, check each driller's license and references, and budget for a 15 percent contingency. Annual water testing and a pump inspection every 10 years keep the well running reliably for decades.
