Dentist pay sits at the top of the healthcare wage distribution, but the spread between states is wider than for most other clinical professions. A general dentist in Vermont earns roughly $56,000 more per year than one in Mississippi - before considering cost of living. This guide uses BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics released for May 2025 and Becker's Dental Review's April 2025 dataset to map dentist pay by state, by metro, and by practice setting, with the specialization premiums that move dentist income the most.
If you are a dentist weighing a relocation, a dental student comparing practice models, or a new graduate evaluating your first associate contract, the numbers below give you the working baseline. We have also broken out DSO versus private-practice economics and the specialty credentials that lift dentist pay most.
At a glance
- National median dentist wage: $179,210 (BLS OEWS, May 2024); general-dentist average: $196,100 (Becker's, April 2025).
- Top-paying state: Vermont at $240,740 mean; lowest: Mississippi near $156,000 mean.
- Specialists (oral surgery, orthodontics, prosthodontics) earn $200K-$400K+ depending on state and metro.
- DSO associate roles offer $150K-$200K base plus production bonuses.
- Projected growth: 4-6% from 2024 to 2034 (BLS OOH).
What is the national dentist salary in 2026? Dentists earn a national median of $179,210 and a general-dentist average of $196,100.
The BLS OEWS survey reports the May 2024 median dentist wage at $179,210 per year (Source: BLS OOH, accessed September 2026). The May 2025 OEWS release, published in May 2026, shows similar $179K-$185K medians when filtered to occupation code 29-1021 (Source: BLS OEWS May 2025 release).
Becker's Dental Review's April 2025 analysis pegs the average general dentist salary at $196,100 - a $4,350 year-over-year increase (Source: Becker's Dental Review, April 2025). The 10th percentile of dentists earns $84,740, and the 90th percentile clears $239,210 (Source: BLS OOH, May 2024).
The gap between the lowest and highest decile - roughly $154,000 - is the widest among healthcare diagnosing professions. The spread is driven by specialty credentials, ownership versus associate status, and geography.
Which states pay dentists the most in 2026? Vermont, Oregon, and California lead on mean annual dentist pay, with Alaska and New Hampshire close behind.
Top states by mean annual wage for general dentists, ranked using Becker's Dental Review April 2025 dataset:

| 3 | California | $184,350 |
| 4 | Alaska | $182,910 |
| 5 | New Hampshire | $181,640 |
| 6 | Connecticut | $180,820 |
| 7 | Massachusetts | $179,540 |
| 8 | Washington | $178,930 |
| 9 | Minnesota | $177,460 |
| 10 | New York | $176,210 |
Source: Becker's Dental Review, April 2025, citing BLS OEWS May 2024 wage data for general dentists (occupation 29-1021).
Vermont tops the list at $240,740 mean - driven by a small specialist pool rather than a broad-market premium. Oregon follows at $209,670, with California in third at $184,350. The cost-of-living picture matters here: California's 142.2 cost-of-living index compresses the apparent advantage versus lower-cost states like Minnesota and New Hampshire.
Which states pay dentists the least in 2026? Mississippi, Arkansas, West Virginia, and Alabama post the lowest dentist mean wages, with cost-of-living adjustments closing some of the gap.
Bottom states by mean annual wage for general dentists (Source: Becker's Dental Review, April 2025):
| State | Mean Annual Wage | Cost-of-Living Index | Adjusted Purchasing Power Rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mississippi | $156,210 | 87.9 | Mid-tier |
| Arkansas | $158,940 | 90.1 | Mid-tier |
| West Virginia | $160,820 | 89.7 | Mid-tier |
| Alabama | $162,310 | 89.4 | Mid-tier |
| Louisiana | $163,490 | 91.8 | Lower-mid |
| Kentucky | $164,820 | 92.3 | Lower-mid |
| Tennessee | $165,940 | 90.4 | Lower-mid |
| South Carolina | $167,210 | 95.4 | Lower-mid |
| Oklahoma | $168,430 | 92.0 | Lower-mid |
| Indiana | $169,710 | 92.7 | Lower-mid |
The bottom-of-list states cluster in a $156K-$170K band - a meaningful gap from the $240K top, but cost-of-living adjustment compresses the spread. Mississippi's $156,210 nominal wage against an 87.9 cost-of-living index puts it closer to mid-tier states on purchasing power than the raw number suggests.
What are the highest-paying metros for dentists? West Coast and Northeast metros dominate top dentist pay; specialized practice locations follow close behind.
Metropolitan areas with the highest dentist mean annual wages (Source: BLS OEWS May 2025 metro estimates):
| Metro Area | Mean Annual Wage (General Dentist) |
|---|---|
| San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA | $221,840 |
| Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA | $213,920 |
| Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH | $208,710 |
| Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA | $204,860 |
| Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA | $198,420 |
| New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA | $194,310 |
| Minneapolis-St Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI | $189,940 |
| Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO | $187,820 |
| San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad, CA | $186,940 |
| Hartford-East Hartford-Middletown, CT | $184,210 |
San Francisco tops metro dentist pay at $221,840 mean - well above the national mean. Seattle and Boston round out the top three. The metros that pay the most are also the metros with the highest cost of living, so adjusted purchasing power flattens the apparent ranking.
How much do dental specialists earn? Oral surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists earn $200K-$400K+, with the top end concentrated in private-practice ownership.
Dental specialties show meaningful pay premiums over general dentistry. Mean annual wages for dental specialists (Source: BLS OEWS May 2025 detailed occupations):
| Specialty | SOC Code | Mean Annual Wage |
|---|---|---|
| Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons | 29-1022 | $362,940 |
| Orthodontists | 29-1023 | $262,820 |
| Prosthodontists | 29-1024 | $234,470 |
| General Dentists (comparison) | 29-1021 | $196,100 |
Oral surgeons top specialist pay at $362,940 mean - driven by hospital call coverage, complex extraction revenue, and implant placement. Orthodontists follow at $262,820 mean on the strength of clear-aligner case volume. Prosthodontists earn $234,470 mean on a smaller case base. All three specialties earn roughly 20-85% above general dentistry, with the highest premiums in private-practice ownership versus DSO employment.
How does DSO employment affect dentist pay? DSO associates earn $150K-$200K base plus production bonuses, often exceeding early-career private-practice income.
Dental Support Organizations (DSOs) - the dental equivalent of hospital systems - have absorbed a meaningful share of new-graduate placements. DSO compensation typically includes a guaranteed base salary of $150,000-$200,000 for first-year associates, plus production bonuses that scale with collections (Source: ADA Health Policy Institute, 2025).
First-year DSO associates often earn $175K-$220K all-in once production bonuses are included - competitive with or exceeding early private-practice income. After three to five years, the calculus shifts. Private-practice owners earn more in net income, but DSOs offer predictable hours, no ownership overhead, and faster path to debt repayment.
The current DSO penetration rate exceeds 25% of all dental practices, with the largest growth in pediatric, orthodontic, and high-volume general dentistry (Source: ADA HPI, 2025). For new graduates, DSO employment is now the modal first job - a significant shift from the historical solo-practice default.
Is dentist demand growing in 2026? Dentist employment is projected to grow 4-6% through 2034, with demand strongest in underserved rural areas.
BLS OOH projects dentist employment to grow 5% from 2024 to 2034, faster than the all-occupations average of 3.1% (Source: BLS OOH, 2024-34). Demand is strongest in rural counties and inner-city dental health professional shortage areas (HPSAs), where loan-repayment programs stack on top of base pay.
The Indian Health Service (IHS) and National Health Service Corps (NHSC) offer up to $50,000 in loan repayment for dentists committing to two to four years of service in HPSA-designated areas (Source: NHSC, 2025). Combined with state-specific loan-repayment programs, total debt relief can reach $100,000-$200,000 over a four-year commitment.
How should a dentist compare offers? Compare on base + production bonus + ownership path + benefits, not just headline salary.
Two dentist offers can look identical on base salary and differ by $50K+ in actual take-home. Build the comparison on five columns: base salary, production bonus structure, benefits including health insurance and retirement match, ownership or partnership path, and student-loan repayment assistance.
DSO production bonuses typically run 25-35% of collections above a threshold. Private-practice associate offers often include a smaller base ($130K-$160K) with higher production percentages (35-45%). The crossover point usually arrives in year three, when private-practice production scales faster than DSO bonus caps.
Loan-repayment assistance is the most underweighted column. A $50,000/year NHSC award over four years is worth $200,000 in present-value terms - often more than the salary gap between offers. Always ask whether the employer participates in NHSC, IHS, or state loan-repayment programs.
Methodology and sources
This guide aggregates three datasets: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook for occupation-level wage percentile data (May 2024 release, accessed September 2026); BLS OEWS May 2025 release for state, metro, and specialty mean wages; and Becker's Dental Review's April 2025 analysis of general-dentist earnings by state. DSO economics are drawn from ADA Health Policy Institute's 2025 industry report. Loan-repayment program data is sourced from NHSC and IHS program documents published in 2025. All currency in USD.
