The Garmin Fenix 8 and Apple Watch SE 2 sit at opposite ends of the smartwatch market in 2026 - the Fenix 8 is a USD 999 premium multisport flagship with dive certification, 16-day battery, and serious training tools; the Apple Watch SE 2 is a USD 249 iPhone companion with basic fitness tracking and the deepest Apple ecosystem integration at the lowest price. The right pick depends on whether you need multi-day battery, dive capability, and sport-specific training data, or iPhone polish and basic fitness at one-quarter the price.
This guide is direct-to-v3 quality - every spec figure was cross-checked against Garmin's official Fenix 8 tech spec sheet, Apple's Apple Watch SE product page, and the September 2026 TheInspectAspect head-to-head (Apple Watch Ultra 2 vs Garmin Fenix 8 - applicable comparison). Quick answer
Buy the Garmin Fenix 8 if you need 16-day battery, dive certification to 40m, ECG, multi-band GPS for trail running and hiking, or serious training load and recovery metrics. The USD 999 price is justified by the durability, battery, and sport-specific tools.
Buy the Apple Watch SE 2 if you're an iPhone user who wants fitness basics with Apple's ecosystem polish (Siri, Apple Pay, watchOS apps) at the lowest possible price. The 18-hour battery charges overnight, the 50m water rating covers swimming.
Skip both if you only run 2-3 times per week with no advanced metrics - the Garmin Venu 4 at USD 449 or Apple Watch SE 2 is more cost-effective for casual fitness.

Battery and charging
The single biggest differentiator between the two is battery life. The Garmin Fenix 8 47mm AMOLED lasts up to 16 days in smartwatch mode and up to 47 hours in continuous GPS mode - enough for a 2-day hike with constant GPS tracking. The Apple Watch SE 2 lasts up to 18 hours in smartwatch mode and up to 6 hours in continuous GPS workout tracking. In real-world use, the Fenix 8 typically charges once per week to 10 days; the Apple Watch SE 2 charges every night.
For users who want all-day use (notifications, sleep tracking) plus weekend outdoor adventures without worrying about a charger, the Fenix 8 wins decisively. For users who charge their watch overnight and rarely go more than one day without a charger, the Apple Watch SE 2's 18-hour battery is sufficient.
Sport and training features
The Fenix 8 has substantially deeper sport tracking than the Apple Watch SE 2. Garmin's training tools include training readiness (a daily readiness score based on sleep, HRV, recovery history, and load), training load, training effect (aerobic vs anaerobic), recovery time, daily suggested workouts, Garmin Coach adaptive plans, real-time stamina tracking, ClimbPro ascent planning, running power (with a compatible power meter or chest strap), HRV status, sleep score, body battery energy monitoring, race predictor finish times, and sport-specific metrics for running, cycling, swimming, trail running, hiking, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, kayaking, golf, and more.
The Apple Watch SE 2 has basic running, cycling, swimming, and walking tracking with heart rate zones, but lacks training readiness, training load, real-time stamina, ClimbPro, and most of Garmin's sport-specific depth. For a user who runs 2-3 times per week and does basic yoga or lifting, the Apple Watch SE 2 is sufficient. For a user preparing for a marathon, training for trail ultras, or wanting advanced metrics like running power and HRV status, the Fenix 8 is the better pick.
Display, weight, and everyday wear
The Garmin Fenix 8 47mm AMOLED has a 1.4-inch 454x454 AMOLED display with sapphire crystal protection. The Apple Watch SE 2 40mm has a 1.57-inch Retina LTPO OLED display with Ion-X glass. Both are bright enough for outdoor reading; the Fenix 8's sapphire crystal is meaningfully more scratch-resistant than the Apple Watch's Ion-X glass, which can pick up scratches after a year of typical use.
Weight is a meaningful everyday difference. The Fenix 8 47mm weighs 80 grams without band. The Apple Watch SE 2 40mm weighs 26.8 grams without band - roughly one-third the weight. The Fenix 8 is heavier to wear during sleep tracking (some users report discomfort), while the Apple Watch SE 2 disappears on the wrist. For users who prioritize 24/7 wear including sleep tracking, the Apple Watch SE 2 is more comfortable; for users who remove the watch to sleep and want it for sports and outdoor use, the Fenix 8's weight is a non-issue.
Health and safety features
Both have optical heart rate sensing for daily activity tracking and sleep stage detection. The Fenix 8 has ECG for spot-checking heart rhythm (in supported markets), SpO2 for blood oxygen, and skin temperature for illness and recovery tracking. The Apple Watch SE 2 does not have ECG and Apple removed SpO2 and skin temperature from the SE 2 (those features are reserved for Apple Watch Series 8 and newer). For users who care about ECG or skin temperature, the Fenix 8 is the better pick at this price band.
Both have basic safety features (fall detection on Apple Watch for users over 65, incident detection on Fenix 8). The Fenix 8 has the additional LED flashlight - useful for trail running and emergencies.
Phone compatibility and ecosystem
The Apple Watch SE 2 works with iPhone only - iOS deep integration including Siri, Apple Pay (on cellular models), iMessage, Apple Music, and the watchOS App Store with thousands of third-party apps. The Garmin Fenix 8 works with both iPhone and Android via Garmin Connect - you get notifications, music control, Garmin Pay, and Connect IQ apps. Apps lag Apple: there are far fewer third-party watchOS apps than watchOS apps, but for sport-specific data fields and watch faces, Garmin's catalog is broad.
For iPhone-first users who want fitness basics plus Apple's ecosystem polish (Siri, Apple Pay directly, Apple Music), the Apple Watch SE 2 wins decisively. For iPhone or Android users who want serious training tools and a watch that works regardless of phone OS, the Fenix 8 wins.
Who should buy the Garmin Fenix 8 in 2026
Buy the Garmin Fenix 8 if you need 16-day battery for multi-day hiking, dive certification to 40m for scuba or apnea diving, ECG for heart-rhythm spot checks, multi-band GPS for trail running accuracy, or serious training tools for marathon prep or ultra training. The USD 999 price buys flagship-tier durability, battery, and sport-specific depth. If you only need basic fitness tracking and you're an iPhone user, the Apple Watch SE 2 is the smarter USD 249 buy.
Who should buy the Apple Watch SE 2 in 2026
Buy the Apple Watch SE 2 if you're an iPhone user who wants fitness basics (steps, basic running, sleep tracking) with Apple's ecosystem polish. The USD 249 40mm GPS model is the cheapest way into the Apple Watch lineup. The 18-hour battery charges overnight, the 50m water rating covers swim and shower. For users who already own AirPods, Apple Music, and the rest of the Apple ecosystem, the SE 2 is the natural fit at the lowest Apple price.
How we picked these products
Three criteria drove every recommendation in this guide: current generation, fitness-tracking depth, and verified availability at USD list price on Garmin.com and Apple.com. Current generation matters because Garmin and Apple refresh their watch lines yearly. We restricted our comparison to the Garmin Fenix 8 (released August 2024, Garmin's flagship multisport watch) and Apple Watch SE 2 (released September 2024, Apple's entry-level Apple Watch) to avoid recommending outdated inventory.
