NP certification exam
The NP certification exam is a specialty-specific computer-adaptive test administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB).
The NP certification exam is a specialty-specific computer-adaptive test administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB). The exam tests clinical knowledge and decision-making across the lifespan. The exam is 150-175 questions with a 3-hour time limit.
The first-time pass rate is 85-90% depending on the specialty. After passing, the NP uses the credential 'NP-C' (AANPCB) or the specialty-specific credential like 'FNP-BC' (ANCC). NPs must recertify every 5 years through the Continued Competency program (AANP, ANCC, 2026).
Job outlook and demand
The NP job outlook is excellent: BLS projects 46% employment growth from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the 4% average for all occupations. This is the second-highest growth rate in the healthcare profession, behind only physician assistants. By 2034, the US will need an additional 150,000 NPs to meet demand, on a base of roughly 320,000 currently practicing.
The top states for NP jobs in 2026 are California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Pennsylvania (BLS OOH, 2026).

NP specialisation vs MSN generalist: which to choose
When choosing your NP specialisation, consider: (1) demand — PMHNP and FNP have the strongest job market in 2026, (2) salary — PMHNP pays 15-25% above other NP specialties, (3) work-life balance — FNP and AGNP offer the most predictable hours; ACNP and NNP typically require shift work, and (4) scope of practice — all NP specialties have full prescriptive authority in 25 states plus DC, reduced authority in 19 states (physician collaboration required for some prescriptions), and restricted authority in 11 states (most common: Texas, California, Florida).

Many new NPs start with FNP because of its breadth, then subspecialise later (PMHNP is the most common post-FNP subspecialty). The MSN-to-DNP bridge is increasingly required for hospital privileges; plan for this if you want academic-medical-centre roles (AANP, AACN, September 2026).
