PANCE certification exam
The PANCE (Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam) is the certification exam for PAs in the US, administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
The PANCE (Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam) is the certification exam for PAs in the US, administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). The PANCE is a 300-question computer-adaptive test with five 60-question blocks and 60 minutes of total break time. The exam covers organ systems and diseases, with the strongest weight on cardiovascular, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal.
The first-time pass rate is 92-95% for first-time test-takers (NCCPA, 2026). After passing, the PA uses the credential 'PA-C' (Physician Assistant - Certified). PAs must recertify every 10 years through the PANRE (Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam) or the new alternative pathway (NCCPA, 2026).
PA vs NP comparison (2026)

Job outlook and demand
The PA job outlook is the strongest in healthcare: BLS projects 50% employment growth from 2024 to 2034, the fastest of any healthcare profession. By 2034, the US will need an additional 60,000 PAs to meet demand, on a base of roughly 180,000 currently practicing. The aging US population, expansion of retail clinics, and the cost-effectiveness of PAs versus physicians are driving demand.
PAs are projected to be the second-fastest growing occupation overall, behind only wind turbine service technicians (BLS OOH, 2026).

PA vs NP: choosing the right path for you
The PA vs NP decision depends on your career goals. Choose PA if you want: a generalist medical education (PAs are trained as medical generalists, can switch specialties throughout their career without re-training), procedural and surgical focus (PAs spend more training time on procedures), team-based practice (PAs are trained in the medical model, working with physician oversight in all 50 states), and faster entry (PA programs are 27 months vs NP's 3-6 years for BSN-to-DNP).
Choose NP if you want: nursing-model education focused on holistic patient care, prescriptive authority independent of physician oversight in 25+ states, specialisation from day one (FNP, AGNP, PMHNP, ACNP, NNP, PNP), and union membership (NP unions are stronger in some regions). Both professions have strong job markets in 2026; PA median salary is $130,000, NP median $128,000, so salary is not a differentiating factor (AAPA, AANP, September 2026).
