Eligibility for JRF 2026
You are eligible for the JRF exam in 2026 if you hold a Master's degree or equivalent from a recognised Indian university with at least 55 percent marks in aggregate, or 50 percent for candidates in the SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwD, and Transgender categories. Candidates appearing in the qualifying Master's degree exam in the same year are also eligible provisionally, provided they complete the degree with the required marks within the deadline set in the notification.
Age Limit for JRF
There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility through UGC NET. For the JRF award, the upper age limit is 30 years as on the cut-off date mentioned in the official notification, with a relaxation of up to 5 years for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwD, and Transgender candidates, and for women candidates in the General and EWS categories. Candidates with research experience in the same field may be eligible for further relaxation per the UGC guidelines (UGC, 2026).
Exam Pattern for JRF 2026
UGC NET for JRF is a single-session Computer-Based Test with two papers back-to-back. Paper I has 50 objective questions on teaching aptitude, research aptitude, comprehension, communication, reasoning, mathematical reasoning, and general awareness. Paper II has 100 objective questions on the chosen subject. There is no negative marking in either paper. Total marks are 300, total time is 3 hours without any break, and both papers are taken together in one session (NTA UGC NET bulletin, 2026).
Subject Choice
Candidates pick one subject from the 87 listed in the UGC NET bulletin. The subject must be related to the Master's degree stream or the post-graduate diploma. Candidates who completed a Master's in a subject not on the UGC NET list, or in a multidisciplinary programme, should refer to the bulletin for the closest matching subject code (NTA, 2026).
CSIR NET vs UGC NET for JRF
UGC NET and CSIR NET are two separate exams that both award JRF. UGC NET is for humanities, social sciences, languages, commerce, and education streams, plus a few general subjects like defence and strategic studies. CSIR NET is for science subjects only: Chemical Sciences, Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. If your Master's is in a science subject, you apply through the CSIR NET notification; if it is in any other stream, you apply through the UGC NET notification (CSIR, 2026).
Different Notification, Different Timeline
CSIR NET is held twice a year in June and December, similar to UGC NET, but the notification and application portal are different. CSIR NET applications go through csirnet.nta.ac.in, and UGC NET applications go through ugcnet.nta.ac.in. The eligibility, age limit, and stipend are the same because both fellowships are funded by UGC, but you apply, pay the fee, and sit for the exam in separate cycles (NTA, 2026).
Application Fee for UGC NET JRF 2026
The UGC NET 2026 application fee is INR 1,150 for General and EWS candidates, INR 600 for OBC-NCL, and INR 325 for SC, ST, PwD, and Transgender categories. The fee is paid online during the application window on ugcnet.nta.ac.in. Female candidates of all categories pay the category-specific fee, not a uniform concession. The transaction processing fee charged by the payment gateway is additional (NTA, 2026).
How to Apply
The application is online only. You register on the official portal, fill in personal and academic details, upload scanned photograph and signature, select subject and exam city, pay the fee, and submit. The correction window is typically 3 days after the application deadline and is the only chance to fix mistakes. No changes are accepted after the correction window closes, so candidates should review every field before submitting (NTA, 2026).
What to Expect After the Exam
The provisional answer key is released within a week of the exam, and candidates can challenge any answer for a non-refundable fee per question. The final answer key, result, and cut-off are released together, typically 3 to 4 weeks after the exam. The June 2025 cycle's e-certificates for JRF and Assistant Professor eligibility were issued on the official portal a few weeks after the result. The same pattern is expected for the 2026 cycles (NTA, 2025 e-certificate timeline).
