Night roles usually run three shifts rather than five, which is why the weekly hours look high and the shifts are long. A 25 hour week is commonly three nights of eight hours plus a little.
Over a year, 25 hours a week at the $21.84 information clerks median produces about $28,392 before tax. A colleague on the $25 top of the range produces about $32,500.
Gross earnings for a part-time night auditor| Hours a week | At $19 an hour | At $22 an hour | At $25 an hour |
|---|
| 15 hours | $285 | $330 | $375 |
| 25 hours | $475 | $550 | $625 |
| 35 hours | $665 | $770 | $875 |
| 25 hours a week over 52 weeks | $24,700 | $28,600 | $32,500 |
Why do night roles pay a premium?
Because the hours are harder to staff, and the published differentials elsewhere show the size of it.
The pool is smaller at night, because most people prefer daylight hours, and the work is alone.
The published shift differentials in other sectors make the size clear: warehouse postings list night differentials of $0.50 to $3.00 an hour, and one parcel carrier added $1.00 an hour to every current worker from August 1, 2026.
Two details decide whether a hotel pays it. Whether the property runs a late bar or a car park, because that adds responsibility.
And whether the role includes the morning breakfast setup, because that extends the shift into a part of the day the worker did not sign up for.
What should you check before accepting a night audit role?
Four questions, and the third one decides whether the rate is real.
The first is the hours, because three long nights is a different life from five short ones. The second is what happens on the audit when something does not balance, because that is where a night job becomes difficult.
The third is the differential. A $1.50 an hour night differential on a 25 hour week is $1,950 a year, and it is either in the quoted rate or it is not.
The fourth is whether the shift includes the breakfast setup and the morning handover.
Our guide to part time catering staff staff hiring covers the other long-shift role where the setup time decides the rate.
How do you find night audit work?
Hotels hire night auditors directly, and the role is usually posted on the property careers page rather than on a job board.
Three routes work. The employer careers site, which lists the property and the rate. The walk-in at an independent hotel, where the night role is often the hardest to fill. And the local hotel association or a recruitment agency that specialises in hospitality.
Two questions to ask. Is the differential included in the quoted rate, and does the shift include the breakfast setup and handover. Our guide to part time hotel front desk clerk covers the day version of the same desk.
What changes about night audit work next?
Expect the accounting to be automated and the presence to stay.
Three forces shape the next two years. Property management systems now reconcile most of the night automatically, which removes the arithmetic and leaves the exceptions.
Hotel desk employment is projected to rise slowly, from 264,600 desk clerks in 2025 to 269,500 by 2035, which is 2 percent growth.
The third is the safety and staffing pressure. A property running a bar or a car park needs someone physically there, and that need does not automate.
For a candidate the conclusion is that the accounting part of the role is shrinking and the lone night presence is worth more each year.
Next steps
Check whether the differential is inside the quoted rate before you compare anything.
- Compare the rate with the $21.84 information clerks median
- Ask whether the shift differential is included in the quoted rate
- Ask what happens on the audit when something does not balance
- Confirm whether the shift includes the breakfast setup and the handover
- Check the shift pattern, because three long nights is a different life
- Ask about the safety round and what it involves on this property
One final thought. The pay figures here are occupation medians and published employer rates, which is the best guide available before an interview.
