The prince2 certification cost moves with three choices: the level you take, whether you add training, and whether you buy direct or from a reseller.
The gap between the cheapest exam-only route and a full classroom package runs past $1,000.
PeopleCert sets the list price and training providers set their own. By the end you will know which route gets you the credential for the least money.
PRINCE2 is a structured method for running projects. It is the default choice for UK government work and is widely used across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. PeopleCert owns the exams since taking them over from Axelos.
This guide covers both levels, the training question, and the three-year renewal cycle that most people forget until the badge is about to expire.
What does prince2 certification cost include at each level?
PeopleCert sells PRINCE2 in two levels, Foundation and Practitioner, both in the seventh edition. Each comes as a bundle that includes the exam voucher, the official eBook, and the learning resource kit. The US store prices are below, and they include VAT.
| Cost item | Foundation | Practitioner |
|---|---|---|
| PeopleCert exam bundle | $701 | $778 |
| PeopleCert official eLearning | $1,029 | $1,235 |
| Reseller exam voucher, from | 300 pounds | 340 pounds |
The cheapest way in is a reseller exam voucher. Zindiak, an accredited training organization, sells PRINCE2 7 Foundation vouchers from 300 pounds and Practitioner vouchers from 340 pounds. You study on your own and pay only for the exam.
Foundation
Foundation is the entry point and the level most candidates buy. It covers the seven principles, seven themes, and seven processes of the method. The exam has 60 objective questions in 60 minutes, it is closed book, and you need 36 correct answers for a 60% pass mark.
Practitioner
Practitioner is where you prove you can apply and tailor the method. The exam has 56 questions and sub-questions worth 70 marks, and you have 150 minutes to earn 42 marks for a pass. It is open book, and the only book you may use is the official PRINCE2 manual.
Which PRINCE2 level should you take first?
Foundation comes first for almost everyone, because it has no prerequisites at all. Practitioner needs Foundation unless you already hold a PMP, an IPMA Level A through D credential, PMQ, or PPQ.
Think of it this way. Foundation proves you know the method. Practitioner proves you can run a project with it. Many job ads ask for Foundation only, so start there and check the listings in your own market before you spend more.
One practical note on the exams themselves. PeopleCert lists the Foundation exam in 14 languages, and both levels run through remote online proctoring as well as at test centers. If English is not your strongest language, check the language list before you book.
Taking both exam bundles from PeopleCert costs $1,479. Doing the same with the eLearning option at each level costs $2,264. That is the whole prince2 foundation and practitioner cost if you want the full path in one go.
For most buyers the prince2 certification cost is settled right here. The exam bundle is the part you cannot skip, because the certificate comes with the exam and nothing else.
Do you need training before the PRINCE2 exam?
No. PRINCE2 is one of the few big project certifications where self-study is fully supported. PeopleCert sells the exam bundle with the official eBook and the learning resource kit for exactly that reason.
Training still helps, and it can be cheaper than you expect. A fully accredited UK course with the exam fee included typically runs about 850 to 1,300 pounds. Some providers package Foundation and Practitioner together. The seventh edition runs Foundation over three days and Practitioner over two.
Decide by your own situation. If you have never used the method, a course saves you from learning it twice. If you already manage projects, the eBook and sample papers are enough.
Budget for a second attempt. PeopleCert offers a Take2 option at checkout that adds one free resit to some packages. Without it, a miss means buying a new exam bundle and booking a new date, so the money lands twice.
How hard is the PRINCE2 exam?
Foundation is knowledge recall dressed as multiple choice. Practise with the official sample papers and most candidates clear the 60% mark. PeopleCert sells a standalone PRINCE2 Foundation mock exam for $109 if you want a timed run before the real thing.
Practitioner is a different test. It is open book, but 56 questions and sub-questions in 150 minutes is under three minutes each. You need 42 of 70 marks, so you must pace yourself. Read the scenario, find the principle or theme it tests, and answer.
One rule trips people up. On the Practitioner exam you may use only the official PRINCE2 manual. Notes, phone photos, and other books are not allowed.
How do PRINCE2 renewals work?
PRINCE2 certificates expire after three years. You renew them in one of two ways, and you only need one of them.
The first route is PeopleCert Plus. You log 60 continuing professional development points over the three years, which is the renewal requirement PeopleCert lists on the certification page. Plus costs about $133 a year in the US and 129 pounds a year in the UK.
The second route costs nothing extra. Sit another exam in the PRINCE2 suite and it renews the certificates you already hold. Plenty of people take the Agile version of PRINCE2 for exactly that reason.
Fold the renewal into your plan from day one. Treat the third-year cost as part of the prince2 certification cost rather than something you discover later.
Where does PRINCE2 pay off in a job search?
PRINCE2 is the default method for UK government and public sector projects. It carries real weight there and across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. In the United States it is less common than PMP, though it still shows up on bids for public sector and regulated work.
Public sector hiring also tends to reward the full path. A team advertising a PRINCE2 Practitioner role is usually asking for someone who has already run a project. It is not asking for someone who has read about one.
Foundation holders can still apply, but expect to be asked about real examples at interview.
If you are weighing both on the same budget, PMP certification cost 2026 sets out the PMI side. PMI charges $425 for the PMP exam if you are a member and $675 if you are not. PMP also renews every three years with 60 professional development units.
You can carry both. The best PMP prep course comparison for 2026 helps if you plan to take the two together. The ITIL cost guide covers the service management side that public sector buyers often ask for.
Agile teams still need governance, so many organizations pair PRINCE2 with a Scrum credential. Certified Scrum Master cost 2026 covers that side, and the CSM against PSM comparison helps you pick between the two Scrum options.
