Weekly pay is the other change. From August 2026, US partners are paid weekly rather than every other week, which helps hourly workers who budget week to week.
Stores also run separate leader bonus and incentive programs, and those terms change with the operating plan for each year. Ask what the store is tracking this quarter before you sign.
How much does a Starbucks shift supervisor make per week and per year?
At $19.05 an hour, a 38 hour week brings $724 gross, which is $37,643 over 52 weeks.
At $21.23 an hour, the same schedule pays $807 a week and about $41,950 a year. At the top of the $18 to $26 band, a full-time supervisor earns $51,376 a year before overtime and any incentive pay.
Gross earnings for a Starbucks shift supervisor| Hours a week | At $19.05 | At $21.23 | At $26.00 |
|---|
| 24 hours | $457 | $510 | $624 |
| 38 hours | $724 | $807 | $988 |
| 45 hours, including 5 hours of overtime | $905 | $1,008 | $1,235 |
| 38 hours, annualized over 52 weeks | $37,643 | $41,950 | $51,376 |
Weekly figures assume straight time only, and the overtime row applies time and a half to hours worked over 40 in a week.
Most shift supervisors work 35 to 40 hours a week. Overtime is uncommon in normal months and concentrates in the December holiday rush, when stores add extra closing and opening shifts.
The top of the band is a ceiling rather than a typical rate. Most supervisors sit in the middle of the range, and the move to the top happens with tenure and market rather than on day one.
What benefits come with a shift supervisor role?
Starbucks ties benefits to hours worked rather than to the job title, so a supervisor on 20 or more hours a week can qualify for medical coverage.
Full-time eligibility starts on the first day of the month after 60 calendar days. Part-time partners qualify on the first day of the second month after 240 hours worked over three consecutive months.
The wider package includes dental and vision, 18 weeks of paid parental leave, 100 percent upfront tuition for a bachelor's degree through Arizona State University, Bean Stock grants and 20 free mental health sessions.
Sick time and paid holidays sit alongside the wage, and store discounts cover drinks and food. A supervisor working full time usually clears every one of these thresholds.
Working fewer than 20 hours a week usually means no medical eligibility. Partners must keep 520 hours across each six-month period, with checks on January 6 and July 6, and coverage can lapse if hours drop.
That design is why a supervisor working 30 hours a week can carry the same benefits as a barista working 39.
Starbucks benefits a shift supervisor can reach| Benefit | Who qualifies | What to know |
|---|
| Medical, dental and vision | Full-time from 60 days; part-time after 240 hours over three months | Coverage starts on the first day of the qualifying month |
| Best of Starbucks Reward | Baristas and shift supervisors | Up to $300 a quarter, tied to store sales, operations and service targets |
| Future Roast 401(k) | Partners aged 18 and over | Company match up to $250 after 90 days |
| Paid parental leave | All eligible partners | Up to 18 weeks |
| Tuition and Bean Stock | Eligible partners | Tuition help for a degree, plus annual stock grants |
How do union stores change shift supervisor pay?
At unionized stores, shift supervisor pay sits on the bargaining table, and the local floor is rising.
Starbucks Workers United is asking for a $17 an hour starting rate for the lowest-paid baristas, 4 percent annual raises, and available hours to go to current baristas (Starbucks Workers United, 2026).
Unionization scaled quickly. By June 2026, workers at 706 US stores had voted to unionize, about 15,000 workers, while Workers United says more than 2,000 are already organized and that the number could triple.
Organising also changes the pay conversation inside the company. A negotiated increase at a handful of stores tends to travel quickly to nearby stores competing for the same workers.
Supervisors are part of many of those units, so a raise negotiated in one store becomes a visible floor for competing stores in the same market.
In a union store a supervisor also inherits workplace rules that come with the contract, including pay step dates, seniority on scheduling and a grievance path when a decision goes against you.
Pay is not the only item on the table. Workers United also asks about available hours and scheduling, which changes how a supervisor runs a shift and how many people are on the floor with them.
How does Starbucks compare with other food service and retail leadership pay?
Shift supervisor pay at Starbucks sits above the national fast food median and close to the retail supervisor median.
The BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program published for May 2025 puts fast food and counter workers at a $15.00 median an hour nationally and $20.33 in California, while first-line supervisors of retail sales workers earned $23.33.
Cashiers earned a $15.81 median and retail salespersons $17.02, so the supervisor rate is a jump of several dollars an hour inside the same company.
That comparison is the useful one for anyone weighing the role. A Starbucks supervisor rate sits above the state fast food median in almost every market, and close to the retail supervisor median in high-cost states.
Hourly pay benchmarks across food service and retail (BLS May 2025)| Role | Median hourly wage |
|---|
| Fast food and counter workers | $15.00 |
| Cashiers | $15.81 |
| Retail salespersons | $17.02 |
| Starbucks shift supervisor band | $18 to $26 |
| California shift leader average | $21.23 |
| First-line supervisors of retail sales workers | $23.33 |
How do you get hired as a Starbucks shift supervisor?
Get hired as a barista, build your hours, then apply for the supervisor opening at your own store.
Most stores promote from inside, and Starbucks says 90 percent of retail leaders are promoted internally. That is the fastest route for a new hire.
Postings ask for 18 or older, open and closing availability, and prior barista experience in most markets. The company runs training for new hires, so a supervisor role does not require outside management experience.
Apply through the Starbucks Careers site and expect a one to one interview rather than a group session. Bring your availability and know which shifts you can open or close, because that is what the store leader is really assessing.
What comes after a shift supervisor role?
The next step is a salaried assistant store manager role, which pays about $50,000 to $75,000 a year.
Store manager follows, with typical pay of $55,000 to $100,000 depending on the market and tenure. Starbucks also introduced a coffeehouse coach role in 2026, which is a people-leadership path that stays inside the hourly structure.
The ladder looks different by market. Smaller stores promote quickly because there is only one supervisor role, while large unionised stores tend to have deeper teams and more steps before a management offer.
The Starbucks shift supervisor hourly pay rate is therefore the lowest rung of the leadership ladder, and the clearest signal of whether a store pays its leaders well.
Pay rates, benefits terms and hiring requirements change often. Check the current posting for your own store and Starbucks' official benefits pages before you apply, and confirm the hourly rate, tip participation and hours you are offered.
