Which states pay Starbucks baristas the most?
California and New York City pay the most, and Mississippi and Alabama pay the least, with the company floor of $15.00 an hour doing the work in the low-wage states. Federal data for the same occupation shows how wide the spread is.
Washington is the third strongest market, helped by Seattle being Starbucks' home market, and Colorado and Connecticut sit in the upper middle because their minimum wages are above $14.00 an hour.
In states that follow the $7.25 federal minimum, the $15.00 company floor becomes the effective starting rate for every barista.
That gap is one reason the average figures vary so much between sources. A California barista on the same job title can earn more than twice the hourly rate of a barista in Mississippi before tips.
Food and beverage serving worker wages by state, BLS May 2025| State | Median hourly wage | Starbucks barista average |

| New York | $16.95 | $22.00 to $23.00 an hour in New York City |
| Illinois | $16.30 | Varies by market |
| Texas | $13.34 | $15.00 to $17.00 an hour |
| Georgia | $12.94 | $15.00 to $17.00 an hour |
| Mississippi | $10.87 | At or near the $15.00 company floor |
What benefits do Starbucks baristas get?
Starbucks gives benefits at 20 hours a week, which is unusual in food service, and the package includes free tuition and 18 weeks of paid parental leave.
Partners who average 20 hours or more can qualify for medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus paid parental leave of up to 18 weeks.
The tuition benefit is the one competitors copy. The Starbucks College Achievement Plan covers 100 percent of tuition upfront for a bachelor's degree, with more than 140 degrees available online at Arizona State University, valued at about $75,000 on average.
On day one you already get a discount, a free pound of coffee a week, sick time, and a food and beverage benefit, and part-time partners can earn Bean Stock grants and join the 401(k) after 90 days.
The savings side adds up too. My Starbucks Savings matches up to $250, eligible part-time partners can earn stock equity, and a SIREN Card comes with credit monitoring and a free metal Visa card.

To keep benefits, you need at least 520 hours in each six month measurement period, with audits on January 6 and July 6, and 95 percent of partners report that they get the hours they prefer.
How does Starbucks pay compare with other retail jobs?
Starbucks sits in the middle of retail pay, above the federal cash register average and close to the big chains, but well below the warehouse clubs. The national median for cashiers was $15.81 an hour in May 2025, and the median for stockers and order fillers was $17.95.
Walmart's 2026 overnight postings ran $15 to $21 an hour, Home Depot cashier ranges ran $15.00 to $21.50, and Target's published band for hourly team members runs $15 to $24 depending on role and location.
Costco pays more at the entry point, with clerks starting at $21.00 an hour, and a Starbucks barista who moves into a shift supervisor role lands in the $18.00 to $25.00 an hour band.

How does the Starbucks union fight affect your pay?
Baristas in 43 states start at $16.00 an hour or less, and the union is bargaining for a $17.00 floor with 4 percent annual raises. Workers originally asked for a $20.00 an hour starting rate across the company before scaling the demand back.
Talks broke down in late 2024 and went to a mediator in April 2025 without a wage settlement. In August 2026, baristas in Nashville held a one-day strike, and the union has filed more than 1,100 unfair labor practice charges, with 570 still unresolved.
About 5 percent of US locations are unionized, and Starbucks has stated that the new bonus and weekly pay programs are subject to collective bargaining there, so union stores may see the changes on a different timetable.
None of that changes the arithmetic in a posting. The rate on the job listing is the rate you are offered, whatever the contract talks say.
How do you get hired as a Starbucks barista, and what comes next?
Apply on the Starbucks careers site for a specific store, because every posting shows the pay range for that location. Each coffeehouse sets its own range, and the listing is the only reliable source for the number you will be offered.
The path up is clear and short. Baristas can move into shift supervisor roles, and in 2026 Starbucks added coffeehouse coach positions as full-time management roles, with a goal of promoting 90 percent of retail leaders from inside.
Cross-training helps. Baristas are expected to cover every station on the floor, including bar, register, and customer service, within the first few months, and experienced baristas in high-cost stores reach the top of the range faster.
Ask about the starting shift when you apply, since a barista on the opening shift at a high-traffic store can earn more in tips than one who works only weekends.
Pay ranges, benefit eligibility, and bonus terms change by store, market, and work status. Check the posting for the coffeehouse you want and the current partner benefits materials before you apply.
Next steps
Read the pay range on the posting for the exact store, and factor in tips and bonus potential for your market before you compare offers.
