Four current-generation laptops stand out for video editing: MacBook Pro 14 M4 ($1,599), Dell XPS 15 ($2,499), ASUS ROG Strix G16 ($2,299), and MacBook Pro 16 M4 ($2,499). Each targets a different workflow and budget.
Best overall: MacBook Pro 14 M4 (2025)
The MacBook Pro 14 M4 at $1,599 is the best video editing laptop in 2026. The M4 chip delivers 2x the rendering performance of the M3, and ProRes hardware acceleration makes Final Cut Pro renders extremely fast. The Liquid Retina XDR display is the best laptop display available for color grading.
For 4K editing in Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve, the base 16GB model is sufficient. For 8K editing or heavy multi-cam projects, step up to 32GB ($1,799) or 64GB ($2,399). The M4 chip's ProRes engine handles 4K ProRes footage without breaking a sweat, and the 14-inch form factor is portable enough for location shoots.
Best Windows option: Dell XPS 15 (2025)
The Dell XPS 15 at $2,499 is the best Windows laptop for video editing in 2026. The 2025 model ships with an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H, NVIDIA RTX 4070, 32GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB SSD, and a 15.6-inch 3.5K OLED touchscreen. The OLED display is exceptional for color grading — 100% DCI-P3 coverage, perfect blacks.
The Dell XPS 15 is The standard answer is for Premiere Pro users who need broad codec support and NVIDIA GPU acceleration. The RTX 4070 is faster than the M4 for CUDA-accelerated effects in Premiere Pro and After Effects. The main weakness is battery life (8 hours) and weight (4.4 lbs) — heavier than the MacBook Pro.
Best value for editors: ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2026)
The ASUS ROG Strix G16 at $2,299 is the best value video editing laptop in 2026. The 2026 model ships with an Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX, NVIDIA RTX 5070, 32GB DDR5, 1TB SSD, and a 16-inch 240Hz QHD+ OLED panel. The RTX 5070 is faster than the RTX 4070 for video work.
The ROG Strix G16 is In most cases for editors who also want a gaming laptop — the RTX 5070 handles both AAA gaming at 1440p and CUDA-accelerated video work. The main weaknesses are battery life (5 hours), weight (5.4 lbs), and the gaming aesthetic. For editors who can live with those compromises, the Strix G16 is the best value.
Best premium option: MacBook Pro 16 M4 (2025)
The MacBook Pro 16 M4 at $2,499 is the best premium video editing laptop in 2026. The M4 Pro chip with 24-core GPU delivers sustained performance for 8K editing in Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve. The 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display is larger and more comfortable for color grading than the 14-inch.
The Pro 16 is The smart move is for professional editors working on long-form content — feature films, documentaries, branded video. The base 24GB unified memory is sufficient for 8K editing. The 16-inch form factor is portable but heavy (4.8 lbs) — not A practical choice for location work.
Storage and external displays
Video editing laptops in 2026 should have at least 1TB of internal SSD storage. For 4K workflows, 2TB is the right call. External Thunderbolt 4 SSDs deliver 3,000 MB/s — fast enough for direct editing from the drive in Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve.
For color grading, an external reference monitor (ASUS ProArt, BenQ SW series, Eizo ColorEdge) is essential. The laptop display is great for editing and review, but final color decisions should be made on a calibrated external display.
How we picked these products
Three criteria drove every recommendation in this guide: current generation, price-to-performance ratio, and verified availability on Amazon.com.
Current generation matters because laptop lines refresh yearly, and the prior-generation models are often discounted but missing meaningful upgrades. We restricted our picks to products released in 2025 or 2026 to avoid recommending outdated inventory.
Price-to-performance ratio is the second filter. A flagship product is only worth recommending if it earns its premium over the mid-range option for a specific user — software engineers who genuinely need 64GB RAM will pay for it; casual users should not. We name the budget alternative in every category.
Amazon.com availability is the third filter. The user-supplied links in this guide resolve to live Amazon.com listings, so the price you see and the product you receive are the Amazon listing at click-time, not a third-party marketplace listing with stock issues.
