Dell rates the XPS 15 2026 for around 14 hours of mixed use on the IPS model (variable refresh rate helps) and 8 to 10 hours on the OLED model. In real-world benchmarks with mixed Chrome, Zoom, and code editor sessions, the MBP 14 M4 runs 12 to 16 hours; the XPS 15 IPS runs 9 to 12 hours; the XPS 15 OLED runs 7 to 9 hours.

Can the Dell XPS 15 do everything the MacBook Pro 14 M4 does?

Most things, yes - both run modern browsers, IDEs, Office, Slack, Zoom, and Docker. Two gaps: (a) macOS-only pro apps (Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Sketch, Xcode) only run on Mac. (b) Some Windows-only pro apps (certain CAD/CAM, certain Office COM add-ins, some accounting software) only run on Windows. If your workflow is cross-platform or in a browser, both are equivalent. If you are committed to one stack, that answer is the one to pick.

Is the Dell XPS 15 OLED better for video editing than the MacBook Pro 14 M4?

For HDR grading, yes - the Dell XPS 15's 3.5K OLED option covers 100% DCI-P3 with true black per-pixel, which is closer to reference monitor colour than the MBP's mini-LED XDR (which has extremely high sustained brightness but visible blooming). For SDR video editing in Premiere or DaVinci Resolve, the two are at parity. Apple's ProRes hardware acceleration on the M4 is faster than the RTX 4060 on the XPS for ProRes exports.

Which is better for software engineering - MacBook Pro 14 M4 or Dell XPS 15?

For most software engineers: MacBook Pro 14 M4. Reasons: (1) macOS is the default for iOS, macOS, and most cross-platform development; (2) battery life makes a full workday-plus without a charger; (3) the unified memory architecture gives consistent performance across cores; (4) the SSD is faster than the XPS 15's (7,317 MB/s sustained writes vs 5,707 MB/s per The Verge's 2026 benchmarks). For GPU-heavy ML training, the XPS 15 with an RTX 4060 is the better pick.

Can either laptop game?

Neither is a gaming-first laptop, but the Dell XPS 15 with an RTX 4060 GPU can run current AAA games at 1080p-medium settings with 60 frames per second, plus full ray tracing. The MacBook Pro 14 M4 can run games that have macOS ports (Baldur's Gate 3, Resident Evil 4, Lies of P) but has fewer titles available. Apple's Game Porting Toolkit improved compatibility but native macOS gaming is still a smaller library. If gaming is a meaningful use case, the XPS 15 with RTX 4060 is the better pick.

Which has a better keyboard and trackpad?

MacBook Pro 14 M4 - the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID has the lowest typing latency in a thin laptop and the Force Touch trackpad is haptic rather than physical, giving a precise click across the entire surface. The Dell XPS 15 2026 fixed the controversial edge-to-edge touch-row design by reintroducing physical function keys, but its trackpad haptics and palm rejection are rated middling in PCMag and The Verge reviews. For a laptop you'll type on all day, the MBP is the better pick.

Performance and battery life

The M4 chip and the Panther Lake H chip have different optimisation points. The M4 uses ARM architecture with 10 cores (4 performance + 6 efficiency) and Apple's 16-core Neural Engine for on-device AI. The Panther Lake H chip uses Intel's hybrid architecture (P + E cores) with an NPU for AI workloads. In real-world benchmarks run by The Verge across Photoshop, code compilation, and video transcoding, the M4 chip inside the MacBook Pro 14 finishes comparable multi-core work 25 to 35% faster than the Core Ultra 7 in the Dell XPS 15, while drawing less power.

The XPS 15's optional RTX 4060 dGPU flips the lead for GPU-heavy work - real-time ray tracing, CUDA-accelerated rendering, and local LLM fine-tuning all run faster on the discrete Nvidia GPU than on the M4's integrated 10-core GPU. Apple's ProRes engine on the M4 still beats the RTX 4060 on ProRes export specifically, which is the one GPU benchmark where the MBP wins.

Battery life is the largest single-day difference: Apple rates the MBP 14 M4 for up to 24 hours of video streaming, which is roughly the length of a transatlantic flight plus a working day. Dell rates the XPS 15 2026 for up to 14 hours on the IPS panel and around 8 to 10 hours on the OLED panel. Real-world mixed-use (browser, IDE, video calls) gives the MBP 12 to 16 hours; the XPS 15 IPS 9 to 12 hours; the XPS 15 OLED 7 to 9 hours.
