Google Skillshop splits its free offer in two. The Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course ends with an award that carries no Google logo, so describe it as a course award rather than a Google certification.
The Google Ads and Google Analytics certifications are different, because they involve a real exam and a real certificate.
Where the course is free but the certificate is not
The biggest trap for free online courses with certificates is a provider that gives you the first module for free and charges for the credential at the end. These are the pricing rules you need before you start.
Free study, paid certificate, checked 31 October 2026| Provider | Free access | Certificate price | Free window | What you get free |
|---|
| Coursera | First module preview | $49 to $79 a month, Plus $59 a month or $399 a year | One module | First module with graded assignments |
| edX | Audit track, $0 | $90 to $300 verified track, certificates from about $50, programs from about $500 | Course window, usually 4 to 12 weeks | Course content, no graded assignments |
| Udemy | Free course, no certificate | $9.99 to $20 on sale, new learners from $14.99 | Course length | Lectures only, no end-of-course test |
| Khan Academy | Fully free | None offered | Unlimited | Full course, no formal certificate |
Coursera financial aid still works one course at a time, and a decision arrives within 16 days. Start the aid application before you take a free trial, because a trial cancels a pending application.
edX audit access is time-boxed to the length of the course, which usually means 4 to 12 weeks. Once the window closes, the material goes back behind the verified track, and the verified track usually costs $90 to $300 per course.
Udemy needs its own note, because the sitewide sale band of $9.99 to $20 makes a lot of paid courses look free. Free Udemy courses do not issue a certificate of completion. Paid ones are a one-time purchase with lifetime access, and most list prices sit between $84.99 and $199.99.
How to tell a credential a hiring manager accepts
What matters is not that you finished a course, but that a named organization stands behind the credential and can confirm it. Here is how the four credential types compare.
Certificate type and what it proves| Credential type | Examples | Renewal | Hiring signal |
|---|
| Vendor certification | Google Ads, Google Analytics, HubSpot | Annual for Google, vendor-set for HubSpot | Strongest, it is exam-backed |
| Vendor course award | Skillshop Fundamentals of Digital Marketing | No expiry stated | Shows training, carries no Google logo |
| Platform course certificate | Kaggle Learn, freeCodeCamp, Simplilearn SkillUp | No renewal needed | Good when a project backs it |
| No credential | Khan Academy, Coursera preview, edX audit | Not applicable | Learning only |
Vendor certification is the one to lead with on a resume. A Google Ads certificate proves you sat a timed assessment and scored 80 percent or better, and any employer can check the record in your Skillshop profile.
Platform certificates prove effort and, when a project is attached, they prove skill. A freeCodeCamp project certification is a better line on a resume than a short quiz course from the same provider, because a hiring manager can open the project and read the code.
Renewal matters for your planning. Google certifications on Skillshop are valid for one year, and you can recertify starting 30 days before expiry. HubSpot sets a validity window for each certification on its own, so check the certification page rather than assuming a shared number.
A 30-day plan to earn four free credentials
You can finish four free online courses with certificates in a month without spending a dollar, if you start with the short ones. Here is the order that works.
- Week 1: one HubSpot Academy certification, which takes between 2 and 8 hours depending on the topic.
- Week 2: the four Google Analytics Academy courses on Skillshop, which are rated beginner for the first two.
- Week 3: one freeCodeCamp project certification, because the build is the slow part.
- Week 4: the Google Ads exam, 75 minutes at an 80 percent pass mark, with a retake allowed after one day.
Add a portfolio piece to any of those. A single published report, notebook, or dashboard that uses the skill proves more than a second certificate, and it costs nothing but the hours you already planned to spend.
Our best data analyst courses comparison covers the same free-versus-paid split for the analytics track if that is the field you are aiming at.
What are the next steps to start today
Pick one credential from the free table above and put a date on it. The fastest useful one is a Google Ads certification, because it is free, it takes a single 75-minute exam, and it lands in a profile a recruiter can open.
Before you commit to a course that claims to be free, check three things: does the certificate cost extra, does the free access expire, and can someone outside the platform verify the credential. Those three questions separate the genuinely free options from the ones that charge at the finish line.
If you want a structured path instead of scattered courses, our SQL course and data analytics course cover the practical skills most of these credentials assume you already have.
