Ireland Clocks Fall Back 2026 October 25 IST to GMT Guide

Published September 23, 2026 - Dublin, Ireland. Irish clocks turn back one hour at 2:00 AM on Sunday, October 25, 2026, switching the country from Irish Standard Time (IST, UTC+1) back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+0).

Quick Answer

Irish clocks fall back at 2:00 AM on Sunday, October 25, 2026, switching the country from IST (UTC+1) back to GMT (UTC+0). The change happens at 1:00 UTC and applies simultaneously across all EU member states and the UK under EU directive 2000/84/EC (Time and Date, 2026; EUR-Lex, 2000).

Spring 2027 forward returns on Sunday, March 28, 2027 at 1:00 AM GMT, the last Sunday of the month per the EU directive. The spring forward sets clocks to 2:00 AM IST.

What changes on Sunday, October 25, 2026

At 2:00 AM local Irish Standard Time, all clocks in Ireland roll back to 1:00 AM. The change adds an hour to the night: Sunday becomes a 25-hour day, and most people gain an extra hour of sleep unless they are on shift.

The country moves from IST (UTC+1) back to GMT (UTC+0) and stays on GMT until the spring forward. Sunrise and sunset shift an hour earlier on Sunday compared with Saturday, which is the immediate practical effect most people notice.

For Dublin at 53.3 degrees north latitude, sunrise moves from roughly 8:10 AM IST on Saturday October 24 to 7:10 AM GMT on Sunday October 25, with sunset moving from roughly 6:30 PM IST to 5:30 PM GMT (Time and Date Dublin, October 2026).

Why the EU synchronized the clock change

Before 2001, EU countries changed clocks on different Sundays, which disrupted cross-border transport, financial settlement, and energy markets. EU directive 2000/84/EC fixed the date as the last Sunday of March (spring forward) and the last Sunday of October (fall back) for all member states starting in 2001.

The directive sets the local change time at 1:00 UTC - equivalent to 1:00 AM GMT in winter and 2:00 AM BST/IST in summer. The simultaneous change makes the EU a single time zone block across the DST cycle (EUR-Lex, 2000).

Will the EU end the DST switchover?

The European Parliament voted in March 2019 to scrap the twice-yearly clock change, with the original target of stopping the practice by 2021. The directive would have required each member state to choose permanent standard time or permanent summer time before the change froze.

Member states did not reach agreement on implementation. The 2019 vote was a Parliament initiative; the directive change requires Council of the EU approval, which was never finalised. EU directive 2000/84/EC remains in force (European Parliament, March 26, 2019; Council of the EU, 2026).

The current expectation - the directive has run for a quarter-century with broad public support and limited political attention - is that DST continues until either a member state requests a change or the Council reaches consensus.

How the change affects Irish schedules

Three concrete effects for Sunday, October 25, 2026 in Ireland:

• Sleep: The 25-hour day adds one hour to the night. Most people wake at their usual Monday time, having had an extra hour of sleep.
• Flight times: Aer Lingus and Ryanair flights scheduled in the 1:00-2:00 AM window land or depart on GMT. Cross-border flights to the UK or the EU-27 are in sync because the change happens simultaneously.
• TV and radio: Broadcasting schedules shift by one hour. Programmes previously on at 9:00 PM will resume at 9:00 PM GMT instead of 9:00 PM IST for the winter schedule (RTÉ, October 2026).

Health services do not require intervention - the patient record timestamp system handles the transition automatically. Outpatient appointment reminders for Monday morning will display on GMT without adjustment.

Spring 2027 forward

Clocks spring forward on Sunday, March 28, 2027 at 1:00 AM GMT. The change moves clocks to 2:00 AM IST. Sunrise and sunset shift one hour later relative to civil time, and the cycle of lighter evenings begins.

The directive requires both switches to be on the last Sunday of the month; March 28 is the last Sunday of March 2027. October 31, 2027 is the corresponding fall-back date, though DST has not been on that calendar since the directive aligned the EU in 2001.

What to do today

Three actions before Saturday, October 24, 2026 evening:

• Set manual clocks (ovens, watches, grandfather clocks) back one hour before bed.
• Confirm smartphone time-zone setting is automatic on Irish carrier network; iPhones and Android phones update silently at 2:00 AM.
• If travelling to the UK or the EU-27, no schedule adjustment needed; same change happens at the same moment.

Health-sensitive sleep schedules benefit from a 15-minute bedtime shift across the four nights before the change - the standard preparation recommended by sleep clinicians. Adults lose an average of 15 minutes of sleep on the night of the autumn change even with the one-hour gain, due to circadian misalignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the UK match Ireland's clock change in 2026?

Yes - the UK turns clocks back at 2:00 AM BST on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Northern Ireland matches Ireland; Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) follows the UK directive. Time-zone difference between Dublin and London stays at zero throughout the winter (UK gov, July 2026).

What happens to flights between Ireland and the UK that night?

All Sunday morning flights operate on GMT in both countries simultaneously. Aer Lingus and Ryanair schedules are written in local time on both sides of the border; ground crews sleep the extra hour with everyone else.

Do Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland change clocks at the same time?

Yes. Northern Ireland is part of the UK's BST/GMT cycle, while the Republic of Ireland follows the EU's IST/GMT cycle. Both jurisdictions change at 1:00 UTC on October 25, 2026, which means the border between them stays at the same offset throughout the night (UK gov, July 2026).

Will the EU vote on DST again before 2027?

Unlikely. The 2019 Parliament vote has had no Council action since 2020. Member states have not requested a new directive change, and the Commission has not reopened the file. EU directive 2000/84/EC remains the binding rule through spring 2027 and likely beyond (European Commission, January 2026).

Does Ireland observe daylight saving time at all?

Yes - in line with the EU directive 2000/84/EC, Ireland runs DST from the last Sunday of March through the last Sunday of October. Outside DST, the country operates on Greenwich Mean Time, UTC+0.

How did Ireland use UTC+0 before 1968?

Ireland observed GMT year-round until 1968, when the government aligned the country with British Summer Time during DST to match the UK's practice. The arrangement has continued since then (Statute Book Ireland, March 1971).

How does the autumn clock change affect children?

Children typically need two to three days to adjust.

The Irish Sleep Health Foundation recommends keeping dinner and bedtime at the usual GMT clock time on the Sunday after the change. Lunch at 1:00 PM and bed at 7:00 PM by the wall clock would translate to 8:00 PM on a still-DST kitchen clock that was not updated.

Teenagers shift more slowly and may struggle with early Monday morning school until midweek. Most Irish primary schools open at 9:00 AM GMT through winter; the shift to GMT does not change that absolute start time, but it does mean darker morning walks for the first week of November.

Is Northern Ireland part of the UK BST cycle?

Northern Ireland is part of the UK BST cycle. The two jurisdictions operate as separate time systems (UK gov BST directive) but with synchronous autumn switches. The physical border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland sees the same UTC transition.

For practical purposes, travel across the border is unaffected by the clock change - both sides are on the same clock face at the same moment on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
