What is SAP MM and why does it keep coming up?
SAP MM is Materials Management. It covers purchasing, inventory management, and materials valuation, which means the purchase requisition, the purchase order, goods receipt, invoice verification, stock transfer, and the accounting entries behind them. Every manufacturer runs these processes, which is why employers ask for it constantly.
One warning for 2026. SAP has been reorganising its exam catalogue around S/4HANA and cloud products, so the code names for the old ECC materials exams no longer map one to one to a current exam. Look up the current certification in the area you need on the SAP certification page before you plan a study schedule. Our guide to SAP versus Oracle ERP helps you confirm that SAP is the right platform to certify in for the employer you are targeting.
What is inside the exam fee, and what is not?
The exam fee buys the right to sit the test. It does not buy the practice systems, the courses, or the certification itself if you fail. SAP lists two exam attempts in the two attempt bundle for a twelve month contract, and that bundle also includes ten hours of access to hands on practice systems, which are the part that matters most for preparation because SAP exams are scenario based and hard to pass without time in the system.
Three separate costs often get confused. The exam attempt, which is the fee everyone looks at first. The learning content, where the free self paced courses on SAP Learning cover concepts and the premium hub adds practice systems, live sessions, and attempts. And the practice system access, which is sometimes bundled with the exam and sometimes sold separately, and which is the piece most self study candidates underestimate.
Ask for the practice system when you budget. If you cannot get time in a real SAP environment, the exam questions will feel abstract no matter how many courses you watch. Our guide to SAP modules explained maps which module your practice time should go into, and our guide to SAP versus Oracle ERP is the check for whether SAP is the right ecosystem for your target employer.
How long does preparation take?
Three to six months of part time study if SAP is new to you, and considerably less if you already work in it. The reason is that the exam tests judgement, not recall. You are given a business scenario and asked which configuration or transaction handles it, so the only way to be ready is to practise in a system.
That practice is the part people skip when they try to save money on training. Use the free self paced courses for the concepts, then spend your time in a practice system, and buy a course only for the areas where your hands on time is zero. Our guide to Workday implementation cost covers the other platform where this same hands on gap shows up.
Is SAP MM certification worth it for your career?
Yes, if you are targeting SAP work, because it is the most requested functional area in the ecosystem and it is a clear signal on a resume. It pays less well if you are not moving into an SAP career, because the knowledge is platform specific and does not transfer to other enterprise systems.
The demand side is real. SAP is the backbone of enterprise resource planning for a large share of mid market and large companies, and implementation partners hire people who can talk about the modules confidently in an interview. If you want the full picture of how the modules fit together before you commit, our guide to SAP modules explained is the place to start.
