Does your employer usually pay for Workday certification?
Most employers in this market do, and the reason is simple. A Workday implementation is expensive and risky, and a team with certified people ships faster and makes fewer mistakes. Consulting firms treat certification as part of the staffing model, because a client pays for consultants who can talk the language of the platform. If you are employed or contracted, ask before you pay for anything, because the exam fee is a small line item for a company that runs Workday and a large one for you.
The catch is what your employer wants you to take. Some companies pay for the exam but expect you to pass on company time with company study materials, and some will not reimburse a course until you have a certification. Read the policy before you enrol in a $3,200 course. If the policy only covers the exam, then the exam is the sensible target, and you can prepare on free material.
Two questions to ask your manager. Which Workday certification does the team use, and does the company cover the exam fee if I pass.
Ask for the exam fee to be covered before you book anything, not after. The exam is non refundable and the schedule is fixed, so the conversation has to happen first. If the answer is no, plan the $800 as a personal cost and decide in advance whether the optional course is worth $3,200 for your role.
One more piece of timing advice. Workday certification challenge events bundle the exam with study time, and they fill quickly around the busiest hiring seasons. If your target date is a quarter away, that is enough time to prepare with free material and save several hundred dollars compared with booking the course.
The first question matters because the certification list is long and only a few of them are used in your industry. Our guide to
Workday implementation cost shows what a company spends on a rollout, which is the context behind that budget conversation.
Which Workday certifications are worth taking?
Workday publishes a long list of certifications, grouped into human capital management, integrations, payroll, reporting and analytics, student, adaptive planning, financials, and cross application tracks. The HCM Core certification is the one most people mean when they say Workday HCM, and it is the one employers name for implementation and support roles.
Go deeper only after the core, and only if your target job needs it. A recruiter at an SAP shop will not care about your Workday badge, and the same is true in reverse. Our guide to SAP SuccessFactors implementation cost covers the other big human resources platform, and our guide to SAP versus Oracle ERP helps you decide which ecosystem to certify in first.
How do you prepare without the $6,400 courses?
Work in the product first. Free tenants and trials are the most valuable study tool because the exam asks about configuration, and configuration is something you learn by clicking. Build one organization, configure a staffing setup, add a job and a position, and then rebuild it in a different structure. That exercise teaches more than any question bank.
Then use free community material for the objective areas, and check each one against the current blueprint before you memorise it. Our guide to Workday implementation cost shows what the platform costs a company to roll out, which is useful context for interviews, because most employers ask candidates which areas of a Workday rollout they would own.
Is Workday certification worth it for your career?
Judge it against the job market you are in, not the certificate. If you are aiming at implementation consulting, Workday support, or an HCM systems role, the credential is directly useful and partners often reimburse it. If you want general people operations skills, the money is better spent elsewhere, because the platform knowledge does not transfer.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics put median pay for software developers at $135,980 in May 2025, and Workday implementation work sits in that market with strong demand because enterprise HCM projects keep growing. The certification helps most at the start of that career, and most at the point where you need a screening signal that a resume cannot give on its own.
