What does a Dynamics 365 CRM consultant actually do?
They translate a business requirement into a working configuration. That sounds simple until you see the range of work inside it, because it covers the data model, the forms and views a user sees, the business rules, the automation, and the reporting. In practice the role spans model driven apps, Power Apps, Power Automate, and Dataverse, with Copilot Studio becoming part of the picture for customer service scenarios.
That breadth is why the free learning paths are a good starting point and also why they are not enough. You can read every module and still not be able to build a working solution, because the skill lives in the configuration decisions. Our guide to Salesforce versus HubSpot for CRM covers the competitive landscape you will be asked about in interviews.
What does a Dynamics 365 career path look like?
It runs from support into configuration and then into design, and it moves fast if you are good at it. The entry point is usually a support or service desk role that handles Dynamics tickets, where you learn the product by fixing things other people could not. The next step is a functional consultant role, where you build the configurations for a business process such as case management or sales. After that comes a senior consultant role owning a whole area, and then solution architect work where you design how several areas connect.
Two things decide how fast that path moves. How much of the platform you can configure without asking for help, and whether you can talk to a business user in their language. Both are learnable, and neither is taught by a course alone.
A third route exists for people who do not want to configure anything. Power Platform and Copilot Studio builders get hired to build internal tools for specific departments, and that work sits close to business analysis. If you are more interested in solving a narrow business problem than in running a CRM platform, that route is shorter and pays well. Our guide to business analyst jobs covers how that role is usually described, since the skill sets overlap heavily.
How do you practise without paying for a bootcamp?
Build a real scenario end to end. A request for a customer service case handling app, with a data model, a form, an automated email, and a report, takes a weekend and teaches more than a month of videos. Microsoft runs free trials and developer environments for this, and the free learning plans point you at the right tools.
Then practise the part most courses skip, which is talking about the requirement. Write down the business problem, the fields you need, the rules, and the report the manager wants. That exercise is what an interviewer is actually testing, and our guide to the cost of passing a Salesforce admin certification covers the same skill from the other platform.
Is Dynamics 365 worth learning in 2026?
Yes, for three reasons. It is a core part of the Power Platform, so the skills transfer across Power Apps, Power Automate, and Power BI. It is deeply connected to Microsoft 365, which most companies already pay for, so the number of systems you need to learn to work on it is lower. And the functional consultant role is genuinely hired, with the customer service and sales tracks both active.
If your goal is the broadest possible CRM market, look at the comparison between platforms first. If your goal is a job, pick the platform your target employers use and get one credential plus real projects. Both are better than three certifications in a platform you will never be asked about.
